In keeping up with the newest technologies,
Kim was particularly invested and optimistic
over one that company is eager to bring to its
APAC and South East Asian customers —
AI-powered smile design technology.
“I think AI and cloud-based technology
will have an influence on the market for
CAD/CAM technology. We will continue to
see developments for tools to support easy
and fast workflows, increased productivity,
patient engagement and improved
outcomes,” said Kim. “Many people have
been talking about AI for a long time now, and
it is appearing much more in dentistry. We
have been using AI technology for our Smile
Creator tool for a few years to automatically
detect some facial features of the patient.”
During the International Dental Show (IDS)
at Cologne, Germany in March 2023, exocad
showed a sneak peek of the future in patient
communication, with a new AI-enabled 3D face
scan app via mobile phone and the TruSmile
Video.
The newly developed 3D face scan app enables
realistic 3D scans of patients’ faces via a
mobile phone camera, without any additional
hardware. The camera is used to scan each
patient’s face in the app, and the AI-based
software calculates a detailed 3D model, which
is then loaded into the Smile Creator software.
This makes 3D face scanning an affordable
and accessible alternative to using photos for
smile design.

design is presented in a short video that shows
the face of a patient who is speaking and

to Kim, visitors at IDS were “captivated” by the
realism of the AI patient videos and the new
possibilities it offers.
However, for these new releases to be wellreceived
and adopted by the market, Kim
pointed out the importance of consulting
stakeholders to ensure that these
improvements are made in tandem. “We always
develop our new releases in conversation with
our customers. We collect input from our users
and put that into action with our software
development team,” said Kim.
Since moving its Asia headquarters to Seoul,
the company has put a concerted effort
into hiring more regional experts to provide
professional service to its users and increased
its outreach in ASEAN countries. Operational
aspects like workflow improvements in the
collaboration between laboratories and clinics
are further areas of focus for exocad in APAC.
With its excitement, ambition, and upcoming
developments at its global CAD/CAM event
in Spain, Insights 2024, the outlook for digital
dentistry in Asia-Pacific is one that is bright and
possibly more intelligent, as the CAD/CAM
provider settles into a new chapter in APAC
from its base in Seoul, making its journey
around the region in search of new partners
