AMY MURPHY
FMA lost a family member in
2022 with the passing of former
board member, Amy Murphy.
Murphy, who was named Director of
Graduate Programs within Harbert
College’s School of Accountancy in 1994,
retired in 2019. She enjoyed a career
decorated with teaching and professional
awards. In 2019, Ms. Murphy was named
a Woman of Distinction, taking the award
for Outstanding Faculty Member at the
University’s annual Women’s Leadership
Conference.
Her passion for educating students was also
recognized by peers in 2019 when Murphy
was named Outstanding SOA Alumna, prior
to her retirement. Additionally, in 2017,
Amy received the Alabama Society of CPAs
Outstanding Accounting Educator and Beta
Alpha Psi Outstanding Teacher awards.
Amy joined the initial advisory board for
FMA and was instrumental in shaping
the strategic vision for our organization.
“When Amy believed in something, she
wouldn’t stop until she got it. Her support
for our program was definably critical…
from concept to creation.” says FMA
director, Tracy Richard. “Having already
successfully run Beta Alpha Psi for years,
Amy reached across the aisle from the
School of Accounting and helped identify
pathways, as well as challenges. She was the
first to lend a hand when our organization
needed assistance, including with the
necessary blocking and tackling required
to establish a successful organization. We
lost a dear friend and an inspiration. Like so
many who were touched by her spirit, FMA
is better because of Amy Murphy."
