The golden touch of rosarians
BySHELLEY TOPP
Loburn rosarians, Michael and Marian
Brown have been awarded aprestigious
gold medal for their blooms at the
National Rose Show.
The medal, which is rarely awarded, is
given for the presentation of nine types of
blooms in aclass where all have achieved
avery high standard of perfection.
‘‘They each need to score over 80 points
per bloom, and this is generally difficult
to attain in any season because of factors
such as weather, that spoils blooms,’’
Michael says.
The couple also won breeder’s medals
for two newly created roses —Candy
Crush and Loburn Lass —atthe show
which was held in Timaru on December 2
and 3aspart of the Caroline Bay Festival
of Roses weekend.
‘‘The hall abounded with beautifully
grown roses and floral art which had
come from as far away as Whangarei and
the standard was very high,’’ Michael
says.
The National Rose Show is rarely held
in the South Island because of the huge
strength of growers in the Palmerston
North, Waikato, Auckland and Whangarei
areas, but this year North Canterbury
rose growers, led by Michael and Marian,
stole the showwith their blooms.
Claire Gilroy, from Gilroy Nurseries in
Clarkville, also had success at the show as
did Tanya Boerlage from West Eyreton.
Michael, who is president of the
Canterbury Rose Society, and Marian,
have been breeding roses since 1978 as a
hobby.
They are attracted to roses because of
the variation of colour, repeat garden
flowering and the ‘‘absolute beauty’’, of
the blooms.
Roses grow in any soil type but prefer
freedraining soil with plenty ofmoisture
during the growing season.
‘‘Any aspect will work for roses.
‘‘They are very tolerant and give many
flowers with little effort.
‘‘Mine receive amulch of animal
manure annually —mychoice is horse
(manure) from the breeding stables,’’
Michael says.
If you are planning on starting anew
rose garden Michael recommends
planting avigorous varietythat would
produce lots of flowers and repeat such as
Absolutely Fabulous, Glorious,orLoving
Memory and as long as they are planted in
good soil that drains freely, they do well.
‘‘The flower beds in Victoria Park in
Rangiora have varieties such as Class Act,
Margaret Merrill, Rock‘n’Roll, Sexy Rexy,
Raspberry Ice and Ingrid Bergman, and
they all look beautiful.
‘‘Similarly, on the corner of High Street
and Ashley Street, there is the Rotary
RoseGarden which features Diamonds
Forever, Auckland Metro, Racy Lady,
Glorious,The Lady and Hamilton
Gardens, all good examples of roses that
do well in our area.’’
Michael would like to encourage
anyone who has an interest in roses to
join the Canterbury Rose Society by
emailing him at mandmbrown.nz@gmail.
com.
‘‘We would welcome new members and
anyone interested in growing and
showing roses,’’ he says.
