Road to Zero:
Pie In The Sky?
How many ofyour friends and family
would you be okay to see being killed or
seriously injured in traffic crashes? Most
people would say none.
Another word for that is zero. And that
is where the Road toZero road safety
strategy got its name from.
Nobody is unrealistic enough to believe
that zero people will be killed orseriously
injured incrashes. The zero is ameasure
of how okay weare at allowing it to
happen.
The Road toZero strategy gets dismissed
by many people as unrealistic because
those people don’t understand the
concept onwhich it’s based: zero
tolerance for the things that injure and kill
people.
Over the years wehave focussed onthe
number ofpeople who are killed each
year, sowethink the zero inthe name
relates tozero people getting killed. Not
so.
The Road toZero strategy instead sets
out programmes and infrastructure being
done to work toward people not getting
killed orseriously injured onthe roads.
Mostly the strategy isabout how changes
can bemade totransport infrastructure
(e.g. roads, cars, driver licensing) to try to
stop human error from turning into injury
or death.
In 2018 asurvey was done to look at
the attitudes and beliefs that drivers in
Canterbury have toward road safety. A
couple of interesting things came out of
that.
The first was that most people rate
themselves as agood driver, oratleast
better than others. This belief is formed by
the fact that drivers see the mistakes other
people make, but they don’t see their own
mistakes and bad driving.
Next was that everyone thinks driver
education isagreat idea………. for
everyone else. But because most
people don’t think they need education
themselves, they don’t go and get that
driver education. Truth is, there isplenty of
driver education available already, but until
people accept that they need to improve
too, it’s probably not going to happen.
And that’s the heart ofthe problem:
people want less road deaths and injuries,
but don’t think they need to make any
changes themselves toachieve this.
We all want better roads, better driver
licensing, safer vehicles, better driver
education. These things will happen
over time with investment. But we could
all improve these outcomes today by
owning our own road safety, bydriving
in amanner that reduces the chances of
becoming victim to our own mistakes, and
the mistakes ofother drivers.
People want change, but often those same
people don’t want tochange.
