PHOTO: SHELLEY TOPP Waimakariri’svolunteer workers recognised BySHELLEY TOPP AChristmas morning tea, hosted by Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon and council’s community team, has been held to thank Waimakariri’s volunteer organisations for their work in the district during the year. Mr Gordon said every year ‘‘passionate locals’’ contribute 1.5 million hours of volunteer work in the district. ‘‘That is just incredible. You are the backbones of our communities, our unsung local heroes,’’ he said. ‘‘In my experience you are all very humble people, who do not seek recognition for all your hard work, but it is importanttousasacouncil and a community that we acknowledge you and say `thank you' for the tremendous voluntary work you do.’’ He especially wanted to acknowledge the food banks, such as the Hope Community Trust, in Rangiora, Satisfy Food Rescue in Kaiapoi and the Kaiapoi Foodbank, ‘‘for the excellent service they provide, particularly in this difficult economic climate which has put more pressure than ever on these vital services’’. The Salvation Army was another essential provider of support in our district, he said. ‘‘Their food banks and parcels are vital to so many families.’’ Mr Gordon said Christmas was a wonderful time of year, but for many in the community it could be very difficult, particularly for those who are ‘‘feeling the great financial burden and stress associated with that’’. Waimakariri was fortunate to have many wonderful organisations and volunteers in the community going above and beyond to make adifference in people’s lives. ‘‘Not just at Christmas but throughout the whole year,’’ he said. Warning issued about toxicalgae in river at SH1 bridge Te Mana Ora, Community and Public Health, has issued ahealth warning for Rakahuri/Ashley River at SH1. Moderate to high covers of potentially toxic algae (benthic cyanobacteria) have been found in the river. People should avoid the area and animals, particularlydogs,should not be allowed near the water until the health warning has been lifted. There are also other access points along the Rakahuri/Ashley River that may have benthic cyanobacteria present. People are advised to treat every lowflowing river cautiously, check for the presence of benthic cyanobacteria, and avoid contact. Dr Cheryl Brunton, Medical Officer of Health for Te Mana Ora, National Public Health Service, says the algae look like dark brown to black mats and can produce toxins harmful to people and animals. Exposure may cause skin rashes, nausea, stomach cramps, tingling, and numbness around the mouth and fingertips. ‘‘If you experience any of these symptoms, visit your doctor immediately, also let your doctor know if you've had contact with dark brown/black algal mats or water in this area,’’ Dr Brunton says. ‘‘Pets that show signs of illness after coming into contact with algal mats should be taken to avet immediately. ‘‘People and animals should remain out of the waterways until the warnings have been lifted.’’ For further details visit lawa.org.nz/ exploredata/canterburyregion/ or contact Te Mana Ora on (03) 364 1777.
