5 quality-of-life
amenities to
look for when
house hunting
STATEPOINT
Curb appeal is important, but it’s not the
be-all and end-all of house hunting. By factoring
in other priorities, such as great schools,
a community feel, along with nearby amenities
that improve your quality of life, you can
feel right at home in your new neighborhood
from the moment you arrive.
“Many families want it all — the connection
that comes with a small town feel, and
the bustle and energy of shopping, dining
and culture,” says Blake Gable, CEO Barron
Collier Companies, the real estate development
firm behind Ave Maria, a 5,000-acre
community in Southwest Florida.
With the understanding that many families
desire to work, live, learn and recreate
all in one place, master-planned communities
such as Ave Maria have grown in popularity
in Florida, and often include residential
neighborhoods, schools, town centers with
shopping and dining, office space, business
parks and recreational amenities.
Keyed into what neighborhood features
foster community and enhance quality of life,
Gable is sharing five quality-of-life amenities
to look for while house hunting:
1. A community feel: If you’d like your neighbors
to be more than just strangers who happen
to live close by, a master-planned community
may be the right style of living for you. In
many such communities, there are more golf
carts and bikes than there are cars, creating
a friendly atmosphere where it’s easy to stop,
chat and catch up with neighbors-turnedfriends.
Such self-sustained communities often
have their own sports fields, dog parks, nature
paths, active events calendars and even
social clubs. Whether it’s photography, bird
watching or pickleball, you can nurture your
interests while meeting new people.
Winter woes! New survey finds
most Americans dread heating bills
STATEPOINT
From using a hairdryer to warm up
their sheets to cuddling with their
pet, Americans will do some crafty
things to stay warm in the winter—
especially if it means they can avoid
turning up their thermostat.
A new survey conducted by Duck
brand, which offers products that
provide simple, imaginative and
helpful solutions for a variety of
tasks around the home, finds out
why people go to such lengths. According
to the research, 61% of people
dread receiving their heating bill
in the winter.
While the average monthly heating
bill hovers between $100 to
$200, respondents say the highest
bill they’ve received in recent years
ranges from $200 to $300, and 76%
of people say they have experienced
an increase in their bill over the past
five years.
“It may seem like the first thing
people would do if they’re cold is to
turn up their thermostat, but that’s
not always the case,” says Randi Bujnovsky,
product manager for Weatherization
at Shurtape Technologies,
LLC, the company that markets the
Duck brand. “As it turns out, 80%
of Americans say they have turned
down their thermostat to save money
in the winter.”
The chilly temperatures this time
of year clearly have an impact on
people’s daily habits and even their
sleep. Sixty percent of Americans
say they have woken up in the middle
of the night due to being cold in
the winter. Respondents say they
have tried everything, from wearing
socks and a sweatshirt to bed to
sleeping with three or more blankets
and using a space heater, to cut costs
on their bill.
However, there is a simple task
that can help solve many of these
woes: home weatherization. According
to the research, more than half
(51%) of Americans weatherize their
home to prepare for the changing
seasons, and 80% of people say they
have noticed a decrease in their
heating bills by using weatherizing
solutions, such as window insulation
kits, weatherstrip seals and door
draft seals that slide on the bottom
of the door to block drafts.
Try Duck brand weatherization
solutions to help keep the cold air
out. From the Duck brand Max
Strength Rolled Window Insulation
Kit to the Heavy-Duty Weatherstrip
Seals, there is a product for every
room in the home.
“Creating a warm home during the
cold weather months is easy, and yet
nearly half of Americans aren’t taking
advantage of the benefits of this
simple task,” Bujnovsky adds. “If
weatherizing the entire home seems
challenging, begin with one room
at a time. The survey finds the living
room is the draftiest part of the
home, so that is a good place to start.
Installing a window kit that will add
a barrier between the outdoor air
and your home’s interior or putting
weatherstrips around your windows
can make all the difference and will
help minimize energy loss.”

What is a modular home?
Modular homes are the ultimate
prefabricated building system. These
highly customizable, environmentally-friendly
homes are built almost
entirely in a factory setting, saving
both home owners and builders time,
effort and money.
Once the main modules of a new
home are constructed — complete
with attached walls, floor, ceiling,
wiring, plumbing and interior fixtures
— they are transported to the
home owner’s chosen lot and placed
on a permanent foundation by a
crane. Each home is designed and
constructed to meet all state and
national building and fire codes, and
a local builder does the final finish
work.
ECO-FRIENDLY
Modular homes are green by their
very nature. Assembly in an enclosed
indoor environment allows them
to fulfill key components of green
building certifications, including
the ICC 700 National Green Building
Standard. Going modular means
that material waste is reduced at
both the factory and the job site. As a
result, the environmental impact on
the land and the community where
the house is being delivered is lessened.
Modular homes are often more
tightly built and thus more energy
efficient, which can result in lower
heating and cooling costs for the
home owner.
FLEXIBLE HOME DESIGN
While most manufacturers have
a portfolio of home plans to choose
from, computer-assisted design
(CAD) allows limitless design and
customization possibilities when
planning a new modular home. Modular
construction allows for a quick
turnaround between groundbreaking
and occupancy. A typical modular
house can be move-in ready in about
three months. And more often than
not, the finished product is indistinguishable
from a site-built home.
SAVES MONEY, SAVES TIME
Designed and constructed to meet
or exceed local building codes and allowing
nearly 90 percent of a home
to be constructed offsite, a highly
customizable home can be built in
a controlled factory environment
while the building site is simultaneously
being prepped.
Most work is done in the factory,
so weather delays, missing materials
and subcontractor no-shows are
all but eliminated, saving time and
money. Building modular homes
save time and money, allowing the
builder to focus on generating sales
and other revenue sources.
QUALITY CONSTRUCTION
homes in a factory setting allows
for more consistent quality due to
uniform construction processes,
training techniques and inspections.
All homes are inspected by
an independent, third-party home
inspection agency before leaving the
factory. Once on site, they are again
inspected, this time by a local building
inspector. These homes meet and
often exceed all requirements of locally
adopted building and fire codes.

whether your prospective new neighborhood
has achieved Blue Zones
Project certification. This pioneering
health initiative is helping communities
commit to improving the
well-being of residents by offering
them opportunities to move naturally,
eat better, develop social circles,
and live with purpose. As one of the
first places to earn the designation
in Florida and the Southeast United
States, Ave Maria is a good example
of a town designed to help residents
live their healthiest, happiest life.
3. A town center: A neighborhood
with its own town center blends big
town convenience with small town
connection. Merchants are not just
businesses, they are neighbors, too,
so that you don’t have to leave the
Fortunately, you don’t have to overspend
to find a new home in one of
the country’s most desirable locations,
Southwest Florida. Named the
fastest growing new home community
in Southwest Florida since 2015
by MetroStudy, and Community of
the Year by Collier Building Industry
Association since 2015, Ave Maria
value, than similar options in nearby,
more expensive Naples.
5. Top-notch schools: Check out local,
state and national rankings, visit
school websites, and connect with
parents to learn their perspectives.
Ave Maria is in the Collier County
School District, which is ranked
sixth in the state of Florida. Boasting
highly-regarded pre-K to postgrad
schools that are A-rated by the
Florida Department of Education,
its private schools are on-site and
nationally recognized for excellence.
It’s also home to Ave Maria University,
which lends the local scene a college-town
energy, complete with continuing
education, cultural activities
and athletic events. This accredited
liberal arts university offers 33 majors
and 31 minors.
On average, Americans spend 90%
of their time indoors, according to
the Environmental Protection Agency,
making indoor air quality critical
to the health of families. The level of
some pollutants in indoor environments
can be two to five times higher
than outdoor concentrations.
Through the new Healthy and Efficient
Homes campaign, the American
Lung Association is raising
awareness of common sources of indoor
air pollutants — including gas-,
propane-, oil- and wood-burning appliances
— and promoting practical
short- and long-term solutions to
address the associated health risks.
The Problem
In addition to cleaning products,
According to a comprehensive review
of existing research, the American
Lung Association has found that
using appliances that burn methane
(also known as “natural”) gas, wood,
propane and heating oil can release
harmful pollutants such as nitrogen
dioxide, benzene and carbon monoxide
in homes, while also contributing
to outdoor air pollution and climate
change. The review also found that
the pollutants from these appliances
increase the risk of breathing problems,
asthma attacks, respiratory infections
and other health harms, especially
in children and older adults.
“Using these appliances can sometimes
worsen asthma symptoms,
cause wheezing and result in reduced
lung function in children,”
says Katherine Pruitt, national senior
director of policy for the American
Lung Association.
Solutions
If you rely on combustion appliances
for heating, hot water or cooking,
there are some immediate steps you
can take to reduce your risk from exposure
to harmful pollutants:
• Make sure your gas appliances
are in proper working order.
• Install carbon monoxide monitors.
• Avoid unnecessary wood burning
in your home.
• Use ventilation, either a range
hood that vents to the outside or an
open window or both, when cooking
on a gas stove.
• For homes that rely on wood
burning for heat or cooking, an air
cleaning device that uses HEPA filtration
can provide some protection
from the soot and smoke.
Colder months have us spending
more time indoors, with 8 out of 10
Americans hosting more gatherings
inside their homes during the
holiday season than any other time
of year, according to research from
Procter and Gamble’s Zevo. Unfortunately,
insects have the same idea,
as they head inside to forage for food
and seek shelter from the low temperatures.
It’s no surprise then that in a One-
Poll survey conducted on behalf of
Zevo, 77% of Americans said they
are concerned about spotting bugs in
their home while hosting guests this
holiday season, with 72% concerned
about finding bugs amongst their
holiday decorations.
“Those who want a bug-free home
during the holidays will have to be
proactive year-round. Ants, certain
fly species, such as winter crane
flies, and other insects, are adapted
to cold temperatures and can be very
active during these cooler months,”
says Daniel Perry, Zevo entomologist
at Procter & Gamble.
To prevent unwanted houseguests
and banish bugs from your living
spaces, check out these cold weather
tips:
• Ventilate humid areas: As the
weather gets colder, hot water is
more in use in places like the bathroom
or basement. These closed spaces
can create humid environments
where insects tend to gravitate. To
attract fewer bugs, keep these areas
well-ventilated.
• Prime your space for plants: If
you have plants that you bring inside
in the winter, properly prime
and debug your home beforehand
to prevent potential infestations,
and check all your houseplants for
unwanted insects before you bring
them inside and every week afterwards.
How to prevent bugs from
bugging you this holiday season
• Tidy up: Cleanliness is the most
common strategy for coping with
bugxiety (fear of bugs) and there’s
a good reason for it – it’s effective.
Make sure you take out your garbage
regularly, especially when
visitors are creating extra waste.
And while everyone loves a festive
holiday spread, be sure not to leave
food (perishables especially) out for
excessive periods of time as that can
attract insects.
• Get round-the-clock protection:
Get the peace of mind
that comes with 24/7 protection
against flying insects. Zevo Flying
Insect Traps use blue and UV light
to continuously attract and trap insects
to an adhesive back that you
never have to touch. Place the traps
STATEPOINT
in the kitchen, garage and other areas
where doors and windows are
frequently opened, and keep them
plugged in to protect your home day
and night from pesky flying insects.
• Fight back: Nip signs of a bug
problem in the bud by dealing with
it immediately. Spot a bug? Zevo Insect
Killer Sprays kill bugs you see,
targeting and shutting down biological
pathways found only in bugs, not
people or pets, making them effective
and safe when used as directed.
“While bugxiety is very real for the
majority of Americans during the
holiday season, fortunately there are
many strategies for keeping them
out of the home that won’t disrupt
your family or guests,” says Perry.

How to handle furniture spills, stains and dents
STATEPOINT
Furniture is what makes a house a
home, however new research shows
daily life leaves fixtures and fittings
vulnerable to damage.
In its “Furniture Damage Survey,”
Allstate Protection Plans found that
more than 242 million Americans
have damaged furniture, and 37% of
damaged items were less than a year
old. Here are some of the survey’s
top findings, along with advice for
saving time and money on repairs
and replacements:
• The Financial Hit: An estimated
$23.5 billion has been spent by 82 million
Americans replacing and repairing
damaged items. The average cost of
furniture repairs runs at $287. Almost
money repairing or replacing it.
• Hot Seats: Sofas are by far the most
damaged item (34%), followed by dining
room tables or chairs (11%), kitchen
tables or chairs (9%), and recliners
or other living room seating (8%). Most
furniture (57%) was damaged in the
living room, with 15% of incidents happening
in the dining room, 9% in the
master bedroom and 6% in the kitchen.
• No Thrills from Spills. The leading
cause of damage is spills, accounting
for 54% of furniture damage.
Other top causes are breaks
(20%), dents and scratches (18%),
rips or tears (17%) and burns (6%).
Beverages are the dominant offenders
for spills (48%) followed by ink/
paint/marker (16%) and food (10%).
• The Cover-Up: Almost half (46%)
of people who have damaged furniture
reported that they tried to fix or
clean the items themselves. However,
only 56% of those who took a DIY approach
say their efforts were successful.
Sixty-one percent of Americans
have tried to hide or cover up damage.
• Don’t Blame the Kids or Cat:
Adults in the household are the most
likely to cause damage, with children
only accounting for 26% of incidents.
When it comes to four-legged friends,
dogs are 2.4 times more likely to
have damaged furniture than cats.
• Prevention and Cure: To prevent
damage, Americans apply pre-stain
treatments (37%), put towels or sheets
over furniture (36%), and place slipcovers
or plastic sheeting on furniture
(28%). When the worst occurs, the majority
of people say they are most likely
to turn to their homeowners or renters
insurance for help. Only 16% of respondents
said their furniture was covered
by a protection plan and fewer than
half (48%) were aware such plans were
available for furniture.
Five things to look for
when buying a new stove
Choosing the right slide-in range,
(AKA “stove”) is essential for any
home chef, and yours should not only
cater to your cooking needs, but also
complement your kitchen design.
“Navigating the many slide-in
range options available today can
feel daunting. That’s why it’s important
to identify your must-have
features before making a purchase,”
says Peter Weedfald, senior vice
president of sales and marketing at
Sharp Home Electronics Company of
America.
Not sure where to start? This
range-purchasing guide offers five
important factors to consider:
1. Size. A standard 30-inch slidein
range is a great option for most
homes. If you’re looking for more
cooking surface however, scale up to
a 36-inch model. There are also 24-
inch options for compact kitchens.
Before making any purchase, measure
the space to ensure the unit will
fit, and that you can open the door.
2. Cooktop Surface and Fuel
Source. There are three main cooktop
surfaces to choose from: gas, radiant
(electric) and induction. This
decision can be influenced by the
power source supply in your kitchen.
If you have a gas line, you could
choose any of the three, as long as
there is also electric connectivity. If
you don’t, consider a radiant or induction
slide-in range. If you love
the power from the open flame of a
gas cooktop but desire the cooking
capabilities of electric ovens, you
can narrow your search to dual ovens.
Helpful Hint: The cooking power
measurement will indicate whether
you’re dealing with gas or electricity.
Gas ranges use BTUs (British Thermal
Units) and electric ranges measure
power output in watts.
3. Capacity. The interior capacity
STATEPOINT
is the space within the range’s cavity.
This is the oven. Knowing your
cooking habits can help guide you in
the right direction. While a standard
slide-in range often offers enough capacity
for an average-sized family, if
you’re prone to entertaining crowds,
a larger capacity like 6.1 or 6.3 cubic
feet may better suit you. If you find
yourself often preparing food at two
different temperatures and cooking
times, a dual oven may be your best
bet.
4. Finish. Whether you’re curating
your kitchen piece by piece or all at
once, choose an exterior finish that
fits your vision. Check out the oven’s
interior cavity as well. You can
make a statement with an unexpected
pop of color here! The Sharp
30-inch Electric Convection Slide-in
Range with Air Fry (SSR3065JS) offers
a sleek edge-to-edge black glass
exterior paired with a cobalt blue interior.
If you prefer a more neutral,
toned-down feel, keep it classic with
a black or gray cavity.
5. Oven Features. When prioritizing
features, consider your cooking
habits and needs. If counter space is
a priority, the Sharp SSG3065JS is
a family-size air fryer, so that is one
less thing to take up your precious
space.
The Sharp SSG3065JS has 34,500
BTUs of cooking power and a variety
of cooking modes, including Pizza,
Convection Bake/Roast, and Air
Fry. The Sharp Slide-In Ranges SS-
G3065JS and SSR3065JS can help
take the guesswork out of cooking
meat. Both ranges have built-in precision
probe thermometers that automatically
turn off the oven when
the internal food temperature reaches
the programmed setting.
cooking features and design choices
“When curating your dream kitchen,
the ultimate goal is finding a
range that looks great in your space
and can help you bring your culinary
creations to life,” recommends
Weedfald.

Three unexpected paint projects that work in any room
Are you looking to spice up your
space in the new year? Get some inspiration
from those who’ve already
taken the plunge.
The following design ideas were
inspired by projects from FrogTape’s
2023 Paintover Challenge. The
friendly competition required participating
DIYers to complete a room
makeover, including one featured
paint project, using inspiration from
the brand’s Design Trends. The participants
completed their transformations
with a limited budget, paint
and painter’s tape – and you can, too.
Paint Appealing Patterns
Pretty patterns, such as gingham,
checkerboard and stripes, offer an
element of surprise and whimsy to a
room. These designs can go on floor
tiles, or anywhere in need of color,
like walls and tables.
Achieve a modern and clean look
with neutral hues or add dimension
and movement by using varying
paint finishes. Whichever scheme
you choose, be sure to tape off the
pattern with a quality painter’s
tape, like FrogTape Delicate Surface,
to keep lines sharp, even on freshly
painted surfaces.
Defy Tradition with Bold Colors
While neutral tones like gray and
beige will never go out of style, mixing
colors can lead to that “wow”
factor. The Bohemian Bazaar design
trend dares DIYers to go bold with
bright hues, like bright yellow or
teal. Use dramatic colors to make a
statement in any space like an office,
bedroom, or even somewhere truly
unexpected like the pantry.
Make them Marvel with a Mural
Whether it’s in a kid’s play area,
bedroom or basement, creating a mural
can add a personalized touch and
make a wall pop. Don’t let the idea
intimidate you. While a more seasoned
DIYer may illustrate an image
or even include words, murals can be
as simple as stripes for beginners.
No matter how basic or complex you
decide to go, complete the look by
carrying the color scheme or pattern
throughout the area with furniture,
décor and other accessories.
For more project ideas, visit https://
www.frogtape.com/.
You might be surprised how much
you can enhance your space with a
great idea, a little bit of paint and a
high-quality painter’s tape.
How to host the holidays affordably
STATEPOINT
From getting your home ready
for guests and finding the perfect
gifts to preparing a delicious meal,
the holidays can seem overwhelming
and expensive – but they don’t
have to be. Take the following steps
to save time and money on seasonal
essentials.
Prepping Your Home
To get your home ready for holiday
hosting, begin by decluttering surface
areas such as tables and kitchen
counters. Next, take an inventory
and purchase any additional cleaning
supplies you’ll need for a deep
clean. Remember, air care products
like festive candles or sprays can
freshen cleaned spaces. Next, decorate
by sprinkling different holiday
décor pieces in the rooms’ focal
points. For example, add themed table
settings in the dining room and
wrap holiday garland around fixtures
such as the fireplace mantle or
staircase.
Making the Menu
Food is a unifying component of
any holiday celebration. To get started,
set a menu that consists of a
variety of appetizers, light snacks,
side dishes, entrees and desserts to
accommodate guests’ cravings and
preferences. Consider using healthier
variations of the season’s comforting
and tasty dishes with DG Better
For You recipes, which include Potato
Crusted Chicken and Green Bean
Casserole. Before heading to the
store, write your grocery list in advance
and make a plan to purchase
private brand products to stretch
your budget further.
Gift Guide
Shopping for the perfect gift for everyone
on your list can be easy when
using DG’s holiday gift guide found
at dollargeneral.com. Consider placing
three self-care products such as
soap, a face mask and a bath bomb
into a decorative basket with tissue
paper to shine on presentation. To
have children of all ages jumping
for joy, save on national toy brands
at your local Dollar General such
as Melissa & Doug, LEGO, Fisher-Price,
Play Doh, Barbie, Pokémon,
L.O.L. Surprise!, ZURU 5 Surprise
and more.
For additional savings, use DG’s
app for digital coupons and weekly
budget, giving you more time to
How to improve the functionality and
charm of your home with windows
STATEPOINT
New windows can increase curb
appeal, providing the finishing touch
on an exterior home improvement
project. They can also reduce energy
bills, provide ventilation and impact
your view, making it important to
choose your products and placement
carefully. Here’s what to know:
Performance
As we head into the coolest months
of the year, it’s important to remember
that windows are a point of heat
transfer. For optimal energy efficiency
this winter and beyond, work
with a manufacturer that offers EN-
ERGY STAR-certified windows and
insulated glass options. Likewise, investigate
ratings for weatherability,
durability and color retention. That’s
where materials can come into play.
Products made from vinyl have
these common qualities: strength,
durability, and abrasion-, moisture-,
rust- and corrosion-resistance. They
are also electrically non-conductive
and have excellent fire performance
properties.
Style
Double hung and sliding windows
are some of the most common window
types nationwide. If you’re looking
for a change, here are some other
types to consider:
• Architectural windows: Custom
window shapes, typically called architectural
windows, come in a variety
of profiles and sizes. Whether
you’re partial to arch windows, octagonal
windows or something else,
custom window shapes can be used
alone as a single focal point or in
combination with other windows to
create a show-stopping view. Online
resources, such as ProVia’s window
shape guide, found at provia.com/
windows/shapes, can help you select
shapes to complement your home’s
architecture.
• Bay and bow windows: Most often
seen on Victorian and classic/
colonial style homes, bay and bow
windows are a beautiful way to draw
attention to your home’s exterior,
while inside, providing a cozy place
to sit and read or just enjoy the view.
Constructed of double hung, casement
or picture windows set side-byside
at varying angles, bay and bow
windows can be customized to include
stained glass, tinted glass and
other decorative options to further
amp up curb appeal.
• Hopper windows: Do you have
spaces that could use a bit of sunlight
and ventilation, but are areas
where you don’t necessarily need
people looking back in? Such rooms
– think basements and bathrooms
– are great places to install hopper
windows, which are single-sash windows
that open inward from the top.
Doing so can improve home value by
adding light to rooms that otherwise
might be very dark. And in the laundry
room, a hopper window can be
used as the exterior outlet for dryer
vents when mulled to a small, insulated
picture window or other window
type.
• Garden windows: While most often
associated with Victorian-style
architecture, garden windows can
be added to any style home. The
three-dimensional design helps
open up a room while providing an
eye-catching boost of curb appeal.
A long-standing favorite in kitchens
behind the sink, garden windows
are ideal for bringing in extra
light and providing a space to grow
small plants or herbs. They can also
be used in a bathroom or den as an
alcove for decorative accents. When
adding garden windows, consider
turning to a manufacturer that provides
the option to include adjustable
shelves. This will help you maximize
the space best.

Common scams and how to avoid them
STATEPOINT
In difficult economic times, fraudulent
housing schemes become more
prevalent, impacting homeowners
and renters alike. To help you avoid
becoming a victim of fraud, Freddie
Mac is sharing the following insights
and tips about the most common tactics
and scams.
PREDATORY LENDING
Previous financial disasters have
led to more robust consumer protection
laws. Nevertheless, you should
remain vigilant about predatory lending.
Look for warning signs, such as
pressure tactics, incomplete, confusing
or contradictory loan terms, and high
rates and fees, including penalties for
paying your loan off early. Additionally,
lenders should not suggest you
take out more credit than you need
or suggest a monthly loan payment
that does not cover the interest due on
your loan. It’s important to work with
someone you trust. If you’re hesitant
to move forward with a lender, consult
a HUD-certified housing counselor or
lawyer to gain a better understanding
of the loan terms.
FORECLOSURE RESCUE FRAUD
Fraudsters often target those in distress.
During times of financial hardship,
be especially aware of foreclosure
rescue fraud, where someone falsely
promises to be able to save your home
from foreclosure. Common elements
of this scheme include the fraudster
requiring you to sign over the title to
your home, asking you to sign unfamiliar
documents or share personal information,
and charging you rent to stay
in your home. They may also offer to
pay your delinquent mortgage by purchasing
your home with the promise
that you can repurchase it when your
financial situation improves. If you’re
struggling with mortgage payments,
don’t deal with unknown entities.
Directly contact your loan servicer, a
HUD-certified housing counselor or
a Housing Finance Agency for legitimate
options to help avoid foreclosure.
FRAUDULENT LEASES AND UNITS
Millions of Americans have lost
money due to fraudulent rental listings.
You can avoid becoming a victim
of this scam by always seeing a unit
in person or over video conference before
renting it, and by never paying a
security deposit until you have signed
a lease. When rental unit hunting, be
Cozy or cramped? Americans reveal how
they feel about living in small spaces
When it comes to the home, bigger
doesn’t always mean better.
A new survey from Duck brand,
which offers products that provide
simple, imaginative and helpful solutions
for a variety of tasks around
the home, discovers that more than
half of Americans living in a small
space say they feel cozy and comfortable
as opposed to cramped.
“We often assume that a larger
home is the most desirable, but
that’s not always the case,” says
Chaffy Assad, product manager at
Shurtape Technologies, LLC, the
company that markets the Duck
brand. “In fact, nearly half of the
survey respondents enjoy living in a
small space, which most defined as a
two-bedroom home or smaller.”
A more intimate space offers many
benefits: 61% say it’s easier to clean,
54% say it costs less and helps save
money and 52% say it’s easier to
maintain. Additionally, 57% plan to
continue living in their home for the
foreseeable future.
While there are many benefits to
tinier homes, there are some challenges
to living with less space. Fifty-nine
percent of Americans say the
biggest downside is the lack of storage,
with 48% of people feeling it’s
harder to keep small spaces clean
and organized compared to larger
spaces.
Which areas prove to create the
biggest cleaning conundrums? The
kitchen ranks number one as the
hardest room to keep neat and tidy,
with the living room a close second,
followed by the bedroom in third. The
belongings that are the most difficult
to make space for are cookware,
bags, shoes and gym equipment.
That being said, Americans are
good at finding ways to make the
most of their home by keeping clutter
to a minimum and getting creative
with organizing, the survey
finds. Duck brand offers a variety
of organizing ideas and solutions
that help people tidy up, from the
EasyMounts Mounting System that
can transform a disorganized entryway,
closet or garage, to the versatile
EasyLiner Brand Shelf Liner
that can make surfaces stylish and
mess-free.
“No matter how limited your space
STATEPOINT
is, there is always a way to maximize
it,” Assad adds. “Making minor and
affordable changes, like mounting
removable hooks on the wall, easily
adds extra storage to hang such
items as cooking utensils or a purse,
while installing shelf liner on kitchen
shelves or in bathroom drawers
protects surfaces and makes it simple
to wipe up spills or messes.”

Upgrade their kitchen with
these holiday gift ideas
STATEPOINT
The holiday season is the perfect
time of year to upgrade the kitchens
of home chefs with the latest tech
and tools. Here are three cool holiday
gift ideas that will elevate the
way your loved ones cook, host and
clean up.
Smarter Composting
According to a recent report, the
United States discards more food
than any other country in the world,
equating to 325 pounds of waste
per person annually, with nearly
half this waste generated in home
kitchens. Whether you’re shopping
for someone living in a region with
mandatory composting or simply
someone striving to be more sustainable
at home, you can now gift them
an effective solution to this issue.
While many people are aware of
the environmental benefits of composting,
such as reducing food waste,
diverting trash from landfills and
enriching garden soil, composting
has also garnered a reputation for
being time-consuming, messy and
emitting unpleasant odors. Fortunately,
new technology is addressing
these challenges, making composting
a convenient, clean and odor-free
process for any household kitchen.
The THINKWARE BLUEVENT
MUMU is the world’s first AI-powered
smart food composter to use
a new cutting-edge Metal Organic
Framework (MOF) to block and inhibit
the propagation of fungi to ensure
clean and harmless use. Smart
technology automatically measures
food waste by weight then automates
the disposal process accordingly.
Additionally, AI storage automatically
monitors food temperature
and humidity to prevent spoilage.
In summary, it eliminates the need
for guesswork, leading to more successful
composting. With a powerful,
triple-activated carbon eco filter, this
4-liter capacity composter is odorless
and whisper-quiet at just 20 decibels.
It is now available at Amazon.
com, Walmart.com, eBay.com, Newegg.com
and Thinkwarestore.com.
Sparkling Water on Demand
One million plastic bottles are purchased
every minute, according to
Giving Compass. Unfortunately, the
majority of them never get recycled.
Help your loved one reduce their own
contribution to this growing problem
and bestow upon them an endless
supply of carbonated beverages with
a sparkling water maker. With a slim
countertop profile, they’ll be able to
transform tap water into seltzer in
just few easy steps. This gift is great
for mixologists who love to make and
batch fizzy mocktails and cocktails
for parties, as well as anyone with a
thirst for reducing plastic waste.
STATEPOINT
Precision Cooking
Today’s kitchen scales don’t just
simply weigh ingredients for precision
cooking and baking, they also
connect to smartphone apps for real-time
nutritional analysis, recipe
inspiration and instruction, and
more. The best models ping the user’s
device when they’ve added the
correct amount of a given ingredient,
easily toggle between different units
of measurement, and allow users to
save and share recipes via the app.
This makes for a great gift for beginner
cooks who want to get a feel for
measurements, expert bakers looking
for better results, those focused
on portion control in the New Year,
and anyone looking to optimize food
prep.
By putting game-changing smart
kitchen appliances at the top of your
holiday shopping list, you can brighten
the season for home chefs.

In difficult economic times, fraudulent
housing schemes become more
prevalent, impacting homeowners
and renters alike. To help you avoid
becoming a victim of fraud, Freddie
Mac is sharing the following insights
and tips about the most common tactics
and scams.
PREDATORY LENDING
Previous financial disasters have
led to more robust consumer protection
laws. Nevertheless, you should
remain vigilant about predatory lending.
Look for warning signs, such as
pressure tactics, incomplete, confusing
or contradictory loan terms, and high
rates and fees, including penalties for
paying your loan off early. Additionally,
lenders should not suggest you
take out more credit than you need
or suggest a monthly loan payment
that does not cover the interest due on
your loan. It’s important to work with
someone you trust. If you’re hesitant
to move forward with a lender, consult
a HUD-certified housing counselor or
lawyer to gain a better understanding
of the loan terms.
FORECLOSURE RESCUE FRAUD
Fraudsters often target those in distress.
During times of financial hardship,
be especially aware of foreclosure
rescue fraud, where someone falsely
promises to be able to save your home
from foreclosure. Common elements
of this scheme include the fraudster
requiring you to sign over the title to
your home, asking you to sign unfamiliar
documents or share personal information,
and charging you rent to stay
in your home. They may also offer to
pay your delinquent mortgage by purchasing
your home with the promise
that you can repurchase it when your
financial situation improves. If you’re
struggling with mortgage payments,
don’t deal with unknown entities.
Directly contact your loan servicer, a
HUD-certified housing counselor or
scams and how to avoid them
options to help avoid foreclosure.
FRAUDULENT LEASES
AND UNITS
Millions of Americans have lost
money due to fraudulent rental listings.
You can avoid becoming a victim
of this scam by always seeing a unit
in person or over video conference
before renting it, and by never paying
a security deposit until you have
signed a lease. Be sure to read your
lease thoroughly before you sign it,
asking questions about any concerning
details early in the process. When
rental unit hunting, be wary of red
flags such as prices that are too good
to be true, listings riddled with grammatical
errors and property managers
asking for personal information
before you’ve seen a unit.
MOVING FRAUD
Typically, moving fraud occurs when
scammers who act like legitimate movers
provide a low estimate and, once
you move, demand a higher price and
withhold your belongings until you pay.
To avoid this scam, research the company
to ensure it is legitimate, insured
STATEPOINT
and has good reviews. You should also
know that reputable moving companies
never require advance payments
or use high-pressure sales tactics.
REPORT SCAMS
IMMEDIATELY
If you believe you’ve been a victim
of a scam, take the following actions:
• If a criminal has your identification
information, call your creditors
to cancel your credit cards. Review
your transactions to make sure you
recognize them. You can also request
that creditors receive your written
consent before changing your mailing
address or sending a replacement
credit card. Your creditors may
advise additional precautions.
• Contact the credit bureaus to
freeze your credit reports so that
there’s no activity on your reports
unless you approve it.
• Report the scam to one or more
of the following entities: the Federal
Trade Commission, the Consumer
Financial Protection Bureau, HUD’s
Office of the Inspector General Hotline,
and the U.S. Department of
Justice.
