Winter woes! New survey finds 

most Americans dread heating bills

From using a hairdryer to warm up 

their sheets to cuddling with their 

pet, Americans will do some crafty 

things to stay warm in the winter— 

especially if it means they can avoid 

turning up their thermostat. 

A new survey conducted by Duck 

brand, which offers products that 

provide simple, imaginative and 

helpful solutions for a variety of 

tasks around the home, finds out 

why people go to such lengths. According 

to the research, 61% of people 

dread receiving their heating bill 

in the winter. 

While the average monthly heating 

bill hovers between $100 to 

$200, respondents say the highest 

bill they’ve received in recent years 

ranges from $200 to $300, and 76% 

of people say they have experienced 

an increase in their bill over the past 

five years. 

“It may seem like the first thing 

people would do if they’re cold is to 

turn up their thermostat, but that’s 

not always the case,” says Randi Bujnovsky, 

product manager for Weatherization 

at Shurtape Technologies, 

LLC, the company that markets the 

Duck brand. “As it turns out, 80% 

of Americans say they have turned 

down their thermostat to save money 

in the winter.” 

The chilly temperatures this time 

of year clearly have an impact on 

people’s daily habits and even their 

sleep. Sixty percent of Americans 

say they have woken up in the middle 

of the night due to being cold in 

the winter. Respondents say they 

have tried everything, from wearing 

socks and a sweatshirt to bed to 

sleeping with three or more blankets 

and using a space heater, to cut costs 

on their bill. 

However, there is a simple task 

that can help solve many of these 

woes: home weatherization. According 

to the research, more than half 

(51%) of Americans weatherize their 

home to prepare for the changing 

seasons, and 80% of people say they 

have noticed a decrease in their 

heating bills by using weatherizing 

solutions, such as window insulation 

kits, weatherstrip seals and door 

draft seals that slide on the bottom 

of the door to block drafts.

Lung Association has found that 

using appliances that burn methane 

(also known as “natural”) gas, wood, 

propane and heating oil can release

in homes, while also contributing 

to outdoor air pollution and climate 

change. The review also found that 

the pollutants from these appliances

Colder months have us spending 

more time indoors, with 8 out of 10 

Americans hosting more gatherings 

inside their homes during the 

holiday season than any other time 

of year, according to research from 

Procter and Gamble’s Zevo. Unfortunately, 

insects have the same idea, 

as they head inside to forage for food 

and seek shelter from the low temperatures. 

It’s no surprise then that in a One- 

Poll survey conducted on behalf of 

Zevo, 77% of Americans said they 

are concerned about spotting bugs in 

their home while hosting guests this 

holiday season, with 72% concerned 

about finding bugs amongst their 

holiday decorations. 

“Those who want a bug-free home 

during the holidays will have to be 

proactive year-round. Ants, certain 

fly species, such as winter crane 

flies, and other insects, are adapted 

to cold temperatures and can be very 

active during these cooler months,”

How to handle furniture spills, stains and dents

Furniture is what makes a house a 

home, however new research shows 

daily life leaves fixtures and fittings 

vulnerable to damage. 

In its “Furniture Damage Survey,” 

Allstate Protection Plans found that 

more than 242 million Americans 

have damaged furniture, and 37% of 

damaged items were less than a year 

old. Here are some of the survey’s 

top findings, along with advice for 

saving time and money on repairs 

and replacements: 

• The Financial Hit: An estimated 

$23.5 billion has been spent by 82 million 

Americans replacing and repairing 

damaged items. The average cost of 

furniture repairs runs at $287. Almost 

half (49%) of damaged furniture originally 

cost more than $500 and nearly 

a quarter (21%) cost more than $1,000. 

The majority of people who damaged 

furniture (51%) say they spent additional 

money repairing or replacing it. 

• Hot Seats: Sofas are by far the most 

damaged item (34%), followed by dining 

room tables or chairs (11%), kitchen 

tables or chairs (9%), and recliners 

or other living room seating (8%). Most 

furniture (57%) was damaged in the 

living room, with 15% of incidents happening 

in the dining room, 9% in the 

master bedroom and 6% in the kitchen. 

• No Thrills from Spills. The leading 

cause of damage is spills, accounting 

for 54% of furniture damage. 

Other top causes are breaks 

(20%), dents and scratches (18%), 

rips or tears (17%) and burns (6%). 

Beverages are the dominant offenders 

for spills (48%) followed by ink/ 

paint/marker (16%) and food (10%). 

• The Cover-Up: Almost half (46%) 

of people who have damaged furniture 

reported that they tried to fix or 

clean the items themselves. However, 

only 56% of those who took a DIY approach 

say their efforts were successful. 

Sixty-one percent of Americans 

have tried to hide or cover up damage. 

• Don’t Blame the Kids or Cat: 

Adults in the household are the most 

likely to cause damage, with children 

only accounting for 26% of incidents. 

When it comes to four-legged friends, 

dogs are 2.4 times more likely to 

have damaged furniture than cats. 

• Prevention and Cure: To prevent 

damage, Americans apply pre-stain 

treatments (37%), put towels or sheets 

over furniture (36%), and place slipcovers 

or plastic sheeting on furniture 

(28%). When the worst occurs, the majority 

of people say they are most likely 

to turn to their homeowners or renters 

insurance for help. Only 16% of respondents 

said their furniture was covered 

by a protection plan and fewer than 

half (48%) were aware such plans were 

available for furniture.

FORECLOSURE RESCUE FRAUD 

Fraudsters often target those in distress.

of this scheme include the fraudster 

requiring you to sign over the title to 

your home, asking you to sign unfamiliar 

documents or share personal information,

in your home. They may also offer to 

pay your delinquent mortgage by purchasing 

your home with the promise 

that you can repurchase it when your 

financial situation improves. If you’re 

struggling with mortgage payments, 

don’t deal with unknown entities. 

Directly contact your loan servicer, a 

HUD-certified housing counselor or 

a Housing Finance Agency for legitimate 

options to help avoid foreclosure. 

FRAUDULENT LEASES AND UNITS 

Millions of Americans have lost

Cozy or cramped? Americans reveal how 

they feel about living in small spaces 

When it comes to the home, bigger 

doesn’t always mean better. 

A new survey from Duck brand, 

which offers products that provide 

simple, imaginative and helpful solutions 

for a variety of tasks around 

the home, discovers that more than 

half of Americans living in a small 

space say they feel cozy and comfortable 

as opposed to cramped. 

“We often assume that a larger 

home is the most desirable, but 

that’s not always the case,” says 

Chaffy Assad, product manager at 

Shurtape Technologies, LLC, the 

company that markets the Duck 

brand. “In fact, nearly half of the 

survey respondents enjoy living in a 

small space, which most defined as a 

two-bedroom home or smaller.” 

A more intimate space offers many 

benefits: 61% say it’s easier to clean, 

54% say it costs less and helps save 

money and 52% say it’s easier to 

maintain. Additionally, 57% plan to 

continue living in their home for the 

foreseeable future. 

While there are many benefits to 

tinier homes, there are some challenges 

to living with less space. Fifty-nine 

percent of Americans say the 

biggest downside is the lack of storage, 

with 48% of people feeling it’s 

harder to keep small spaces clean 

and organized compared to larger 

spaces. 

Which areas prove to create the 

biggest cleaning conundrums? The 

kitchen ranks number one as the 

hardest room to keep neat and tidy, 

with the living room a close second, 

followed by the bedroom in third. The 

belongings that are the most difficult 

to make space for are cookware, 

bags, shoes and gym equipment.

prevalent, impacting homeowners

becoming a victim of fraud, Freddie 

Mac is sharing the following insights 

and tips about the most common tactics 

and scams. 

PREDATORY LENDING 

Previous financial disasters have 

led to more robust consumer protection 

laws. Nevertheless, you should 

remain vigilant about predatory lending. 

Look for warning signs, such as 

pressure tactics, incomplete, confusing 

or contradictory loan terms, and high 

rates and fees, including penalties for 

paying your loan off early. Additionally, 

lenders should not suggest you 

take out more credit than you need 

or suggest a monthly loan payment 

that does not cover the interest due on 

your loan. It’s important to work with 

someone you trust. If you’re hesitant 

to move forward with a lender, consult 

a HUD-certified housing counselor or 

lawyer to gain a better understanding 

of the loan terms. 

FORECLOSURE RESCUE FRAUD 

Fraudsters often target those in distress. 

During times of financial hardship, 

be especially aware of foreclosure 

rescue fraud, where someone falsely 

promises to be able to save your home 

from foreclosure. Common elements 

of this scheme include the fraudster 

requiring you to sign over the title to 

your home, asking you to sign unfamiliar 

documents or share personal information, 

and charging you rent to stay 

in your home. They may also offer to 

pay your delinquent mortgage by purchasing 

your home with the promise 

that you can repurchase it when your 

financial situation improves. If you’re 

struggling with mortgage payments, 

don’t deal with unknown entities.

MOVING FRAUD 

Typically, moving fraud occurs when 

scammers who act like legitimate movers 

provide a low estimate and, once 

you move, demand a higher price and 

withhold your belongings until you pay. 

To avoid this scam, research the company 

to ensure it is legitimate, insured

know that reputable moving companies 

never require advance payments 

or use high-pressure sales tactics. 

REPORT SCAMS 

IMMEDIATELY 

If you believe you’ve been a victim 

of a scam, take the following actions: 

• If a criminal has your identification 

information, call your creditors 

to cancel your credit cards. Review 

your transactions to make sure you 

recognize them. You can also request 

that creditors receive your written 

consent before changing your mailing 

address or sending a replacement 

credit card. Your creditors may 

advise additional precautions. 

• Contact the credit bureaus to 

freeze your credit reports so that 

there’s no activity on your reports 

unless you approve it. 

• Report the scam to one or more 

of the following entities: the Federal 

Trade Commission, the Consumer 

Financial Protection Bureau, HUD’s 

Office of the Inspector General Hotline, 

and the U.S. Department of 

Justice.
