THE NEW SMYRNA BEACH MUSEUM OF EAST COAST SURFING The museum opened in 2014 inside the New Smyrna Beach Museum of History, this unique space features extensive displays of surfing memorabilia like surfboards, surf art (some created by local Jimmy Lane), and photos documenting the area’s surfing history. Other competitions include the Southeast Volusia Chamber Surf Contest, the Toyota USA Surfing Prime Surfing Series, the NSSA Competition, and the Gnarly Charley Surf Series for kids under 16. There’s the Mike Martin Pro event, the Southeastern Regional Championships, and others, so whether you want to compete or be a spectator, you have plenty of options. JIMMY LANE A local legend, Jimmy Lane is behind the Jimmy Lane Surfing Academy, one of NSB’s oldest and most respected surf schools, founded almost 40 years ago after Lane retired from the pro circuit. Lane’s surf camp programs and coaching have led participants to become pros themselves–some graduates even return to teach with Lane. He’s also a certified surfing judge and an artist who has painted thousands of surfboards and murals in the local community and beyond. An active member of the local community, he is especially involved with The New Smyrna Beach Museum of East Coast Surfing at the New Smyrna Beach Museum of History. SURFIN’ NSB Offering private and group lessons, Surfin’ NSB is owned and operated by Marcie Baldwin, an East Coast Surfing and a United States Surfing Champion. She acquired her Captain’s license then sailed the world on charter and racing boats. She also holds a BA in History from the University of Florida. She has been teaching surfing for 15 years and requires that each of her instructors have at least 15 years surfing experience. www.surfinnsb.com NICHOLS SURF SHOP New Smyrna’s oldest surf shop is Nichols, which opened its doors on Flagler Avenue in 1974. Brothers Dan and Dave Nichols began making surfboards in the 1960s and started the area’s first surf school.
