A Vibrant Arts
Community
A former warehouse turned fine arts gallery,
Arts on Douglas, was founded in 1996 and
was originally established to showcase the
work of Florida’s artists. It has since become
affiliated with the Atlantic Center for the
Arts. Today, it is home to a 3,500 square
foot exhibition space that shows 18 exhibitions
a year in addition to the newest experience,
the alt_space, which features works
from emerging and established Florida
artists. The gallery is also equipped to
facilitate commissions, deliver, and install
artwork, and provide consultation services.
The sprawling 69 acre setting for the Atlantic
Center for the Arts features a theatre space,
sculpture, dance, writing and painting studios,
as well as a vibrant Artist-in-Residence
program. The center has a stacked calendar
of events, with everything from Literary Teas
to Expressive Movement classes. You might
try the Nature Sketch Club –just bring a
sketch pad and a pencil and let artist Bethany
Bennett guide you, or pop in and tour one of
the many ongoing exhibits. Experiences are
open to all, and kids will love the ACA Summer
Art Camp offerings. Stop in at Gallery 237,
an eclectic gift shop with a focus on original
works of art that meet functionality. Here
you’ll find a marvelous collection of all kinds
of beautiful objects, from pottery and jewelry
to paintings and textiles. Stock the bar with
a set of stunning hand-painted rocks glasses
or surprise someone with an original pair of
earrings crafted from marble and concrete.
To truly experience the arts scene in New
Smyrna Beach, one must pay a visit to the
ultimate community theatre, The Little
Theatre: Established in 1947, this locally run
(from actors to directors) theatre has long been
bringing the best of Broadway, be it musical,
comedy or drama, to the area. The reasonable
ticket prices and intimate setting make it a
fun, affordable way to celebrate the artsy side
of beach living - New Smyrna Beach style.
