Fire threat escalates
as grass left uncut
• By Chris Barclay
CONCERN IS mounting uncut
tinder-dry grass will become a
powder keg.
Berms on many roads in the
district have long, uncut grass
with some confusion over
whether it is the council or the
property owner’s responsibility.
With the
potential for
sparks or a
discarded
cigarette butt
to ignite devastating
blazes
intensifying,
Hororata chief
fire officer
Bruce Sayer
Bruce
Sayer
has expressed frustrations with
the council’s monitoring of
grass growth.
“They drive around in their
utes so you’d think they see
stuff like that and know it’s
their responsibility,” he said.
“In the good old days they
(council) used to mow along
the roadsides, they don’t anymore.”
Zealand Canterbury district
commander Dave Stackhouse
declared a restricted fire season
last Wednesday until further
notice, an indication the
potential for wildfires
has heightened.
Restricted fire season means
a permit is required for openair
fires.
The widespread blaze caused
by sparks from a train shunting
wagons at Kirwee on January 7
illustrated the danger.
“You can see how small
sparks can quickly turn into
large fires,” Stackhouse said.
Investors
size up
district’s
property
market
• By Daniel Alvey
REAL ESTATE agents are
expecting the Selwyn property
market to become a place for
investors looking for a bargain.
Selwyn has experienced both a
rise and a fall in prices in recent
years, with last year’s general
election also affecting sales.
Bayleys agent Nick Booth said
he is expecting 2024 to deliver a
stable market and one investors
will be more interested in it due to
the new government.
He said activity increased
towards the end of the year, once
the Government was elected.
“As we continue to go through
this year we’ll likely see more
confidence in people as well.
“I would imagine that throughout
this year you’ll see more of
an increase in terms of investors
coming back into the market with
some of those proposed changes
that National was saying they
were going to make like interest
deductibility.”
Booth said the Selwyn market is
lucrative for investors.
Motorist’s close call after vehicle
fails to stop because of no signs
• By Daniel Alvey
A FATALITY waiting to happen.
That’s how the deliberate
targeting of road signs in the
district has been described.
Glentunnel resident and
father-of-two David Craig was
driving along Bealey Rd last
week when he had a scary near
miss – he said a driver failed to
stop at the sign on Coaltrack Rd
and passed feet away from him
travelling at high speed.
“I actually s**t myself.
“The car just went straight
through, obviously they did not
realise the stop sign had been
taken down. Also, the yellow
lines are all faded there so you
can’t really see them,” Craig said.
Craig said both stop signs on
either side of the road had been
taken out.
This is not the first set of signs
he has noticed being taken out.
“There are loads of them all
over the place.”
Council head of operational
delivery Gareth Morgan said
over 150 signs have been
damaged in recent weeks in the
Malvern area. Of those, 90 per
DANGEROUS: Signs, such as these along Bealey Rd in Hororata, have been knocked
down throughout the district.
cent are either stop, give way, or
curve and intersection warning
signs.
On an annual basis, an average
of fewer than 10 signs require
replacement due to vandalism,
incurring repair costs of
approximately $2,000. So far the
current spate of vandalism has
cost ratepayers $30,000.
“Beyond the financial impact,
damaged signs pose a significant
risk to road users who rely
on them for crucial safety
information,” Morgan said.
Craig reported the incident to
the police. When he drove home
later that day he noticed the
signs had been repaired.
Morgan said the council is
now short on replacement posts.
“Due to the high volume of
damaged signs and the limited
supply of new posts, many signs
are being temporarily reinstated
using the damaged posts.
“While this may appear as a
suboptimal solution, it ensures
that the signs remain visible
until our contractors can return
with new posts and, in some
instances, new signs,” Morgan
said.
In 2013, Gordon Clifford
Chapman, 76, was killed at the
same intersection where Craig
had his near miss. Chapman
missed the stop sign, colliding
with an oncoming car.
In the district, intersection
crashes make up
over 57 per cent
of all local road
crashes.
Hororata
Community
Trust executive
officer Cindy
Cindy
Driscoll
Driscoll said the
community is
concerned by
the recent felling
of signs, which she said has
been happening since before
Christmas.
Driscoll said the trust is
currently fundraising to install
CCTV cameras.
Morgan said they are
working with police, but said
identifying the vandals remains
a “challenging task”.
Selwyn ‘a no-brainer’ for investors
“For an investor, you can
said Booth.
district has increased by 2.1
the average value now sitting
at $827,006. This represents
THE AMOUNT of construction
in the district is expected to
bounce back after a dip at the
end of last year.
Canterbury Construction
Report author Mike Blackburn
said the decrease in Selwyn has
been reflected nationwide.
“Building consent numbers
over the last six months have
been down then up and down
an annual growth rate from
November 2022 of -0.6 per cent.
Booth said he was expecting
prices to keep increasing as the
year goes on.
“I think it will be a slow and
steady increase from now until
the end of the year.”
He said the prices are unlikely
to increase to the record levels
seen in 2022, where the average
price reached $901,729.
Booth
expected
remain the
hotspots for
property sales in
the district.
again,” Blackburn said.
He said over
the past two
years Selwyn
has been
averaging 150
new consents
a month, but
this dropped
to below 60 in
December. Mike
“That was Balckburn
symptomatic of the downturn
Shefford said he expected it to be
“business as usual”.
He said there was a good
number of first-home buyers
looking for house and land
packages.
“The buyer pool up to $775,000
is quite a big buyer pool at the
moment.
“Any area where you put a
house and land package together
or a new build package together
for under $775,000 will move.”
Shefford said it will likely be a
gap before investors start buying.
“I think we have another three
months to get our head around
the Government’s changes and
work out fully what will happen.”
Shefford recommended that
first-home buyers get in early
before the investors start buying
more.
across the whole building
sector. Selwyn just seemed
to be down a little bit more
compared to Waimakariri and
Christchurch.”
Blackburn said there
is likely to be a delay for
developers getting consents
for new developments until
the government has finalised
its direction on key policies
for medium-density housing
and the future of the Resource
This three-bedroom new-build in the Lincoln subdivision of
Flemington is listed for $730,000.
Construction sector set to rise after consent slump
Management Act.
“One of the biggest enemies of
construction is uncertainty.
“Naturally, building activity
will slow because no one wants
to act on a limb and build 20 or
30 spec builds, then they can’t be
sold (due to rule changes).”
But construction is likely to lift
this year after CoreLogic’s latest
report showed a decrease in
building costs.
“The industry itself is simply
facing less pressure on overall
capacity, compared to its peak
at the end of 2022, where overstretched
builders struggled
to keep up with workloads for
new houses and renovations,”
CoreLogic chief property
economist Kelvin Davidson said.
“Records show material supply
chains are easing further, with
timber prices stabilising, and
even some modest falls for metal
products.
‘Cancer does not choose those who
can afford help and treatment’
• By Daniel Alvey
LIZ MORRISH has a good
reason to make every day a good
day – she has been given only
four-to-five months to live.
The 68-year-old was diagnosed
with bowel cancer five years ago,
and after a number of operations
thought she was in the clear.
“December 2022 they discovered
it had metastasized into my
lungs so it was then stage four
terminal cancer.
“So I’ve had 13 rounds of
chemo, two different lots of
drugs, both stopped working.
“So there are no more options
for me drug-wise, unless you pay
for it which is exorbitant, and
no guarantees of making much
difference.
“It’s pretty tough,” Liz said.
Liz does not want to think
about the time she has left.
Instead, having lived in Lincoln
all her life on her family’s
150-year-old farm, she decided
to do something to help the community.
Liz and friends have organised
a game of walking netball on
Sunday at the Lincoln Event
Centre, with funds going to the
ACTIVE: Given four-to five months to live, Liz Morrish has
organised a fundraiser to help fellow cancer sufferers.
Selwyn Cancer Society.
“The fundraiser is about helping
those who are less fortunate
than I am, because cancer does
not choose those who can afford
help and treatment,” she said.
Always sporty, Liz has played
netball, badminton, tennis, and
more recently golf.
“I’ve got to keep doing something,”
she said.
Lincoln-based teams the
Lustys and Springlincs, which
have been playing netball locally
and at the masters games over
the past 25 years, will face off
again, this time for a good cause.
“We’ve been rivals and friends
for many years and over a couple
of wines we decided to do something.
“We’re all too old to actually
play netball so we decided to do
a walking netball, which is actually
a sport.”
Liz said she has received great
support from Lincoln businesses,
which have provided items for
raffles for the fundraiser.
“It has been fabulous, not one
single person turned me down.
It has been so generous so I’m
blown away and very humbled.”
Helping organise the afternoon
is Lincoln resident Carol
Townsend.
“The Lincoln community is
very caring . . . and Liz is such a
lovely person,” Carol said.
As well as the lung cancer, Liz
also has a tumour in her lower
groin and in the past fortnight
found out the cancer has spread
even further.
“Last week I lost the use of
my right hand completely . . .
ended up a night in hospital and
had a brain scan, and it has now
moved into my brain.”
This time there may be options
for surgery or radiation
treatment to regain control of
her right hand, but Liz is yet to
decide on whether she’ll pursue
them.
Along with the fundraiser Liz
has decided to get some bucket
list travel items ticked off.
“This week we’re going down
south. I’ve always wanted to go
to Doubtful Sound and have a
look around if they can get me in
a kayak . . . my ultimate one is to
go to Rarotonga.
“I’m making the most of
everything now, there’s no point
sitting at home saying ‘poor
me’, I have to create the best
memories I can from now on in.”
• The walking netball
fundraiser will be held
at 4pm on Sunday at
the Lincoln Event Centre.
Admission $10 for adults,
children free. An aftermatch
BBQ will be held at
The Famous Grouse from
5.30pm. BBQ cost $20
per adult, $12 for children
under 12. Donations can
TOP JOB: The berm outside this property on Springston Rolleston Rd has been cut, negating any fire risk. Right – sparks from the brakes of a freight
train caused the fire in Kirwee.
PHOTOS: BARRY CLARKE, GEORGE HEARD/NZ HERALD
Responsibility for cutting grass a grey area
• From page 1
Two years of high rainfall
had increased grass and
vegetation growth across
the district, with sweltering
temperatures last week
exacerbating the fire risk.
The mercury hit 35 deg C in
the district last Thursday.
Sayer, who has lived in
Hororata since 2002, doubted
contacting the council would be
worthwhile.
“They mow in the village, but
I’ve never seen them mowing
the roadsides. I don’t know if
they have the ability to do it, or
they just don’t bother. A lot of
the roadsides are quite high with
grass.”
The council said it wasn’t able
to respond for this week’s issue
of Selwyn Times.
Mowing roadside grass can
be a grey area with landowners
and Waka Kotahi New
Zealand Transport Agency also
responsible, depending on the
location.
“Some farmers do and some
don’t,” said Sayer.
“There’s some people that own
land that haven’t done anything
for the last 20 years and the grass
just grows on there.
“The potential (for a fire)
here is quite high. The way the
weather is now, one little spark
and there could be thousands
and thousands of hectares
burnt.”
FENZ Canterbury community
risk manager Dean Harker
said Cantabrians were the
most proactive in New Zealand
regarding the reporting of fire
hazards.
There had been 50 reports
lodged via the FENZ website
over the last three weeks, with
Harker saying some parts of New
Zealand register 30 per year.
Three staff were assessing
the severity of the reports, with
Harker adding the Kirwee fire
helped raise public awareness.
Harker said the council had
been responsive when an issue
was raised.
“Normally the council is pretty
good once we send something
out. They’re very proactive. We
work closely with them around
fire prevention advice,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sayer urged
visitors to Lake Coleridge not to
park on grass at the end of their
journey.
“People are parking their cars
on dry grass. You drive from
Christchurch, pull over on the
side of the road and that’s how
you can cause a fire because the
exhaust is hot.
“Farmers up there feel it’s the
driest it’s been for 20 years.”
Donut’s
new paint
guaranteed
for 10 years
• By Daniel Alvey
THE SPRINGFIELD Donut has
had its frosting secured for the
next decade.
The popular tourist attraction
has been plagued with paint quality
issues over the past two years.
Since 2020, the donut has been
repainted four times at a total cost
of $17,864.57 and was repainted
again in December – but this time
the council believes it will last.
Council reserves operation
manager Jonathan Crawford said
the work, carried out by councilowned
contractor CORDE, has
a 10-year painting contractor
certification.
“This will cover any defects in
paint or application for 10 years,”
Crawford said.
“The process involved ensuring
a proper priming of the surface
to ensure long-lasting results, and
consisted of a low-pressure water
clean and degrease, epoxy crack
repairs throughout the donut,
sanding and priming to put a
build coat on before painting the
topcoat among various other prep
works/coats.”
PREBBLETON residents will
travel north to get answers on
the new organics plant to be
built in south Hornby.
The new plant is the Christchurch
City Council’s answer to
the ongoing stench from the
current plant in Bromley.
After years of complaints, the
city council decided to close
Bromley and open a new facility
in 2026 on an industrial site
in Aruha Rd, south Hornby,
about 1km from the outskirts of
Prebbleton.
It says the new Ecogas plant
will be fully enclosed, and there
will be no odours associated
with the operations.
Prebbleton Community
Association chair Jane Elms
and resident and environmental
scientist Susan Aitken will be
part of a city council delegation
to visit Ecogas’ Auckland and
Rotorua plants next week.
Also on the trip will be
members of the Greater Hornby
Residents Association.
The trip will cost the city
council about $11,000, and
Concerned residents to visit
Ecogas’ North Island plants
RESEARCH: Prebbleton residents will visit two Ecogas
organics plants in the North Island later this month as
part of a research trip into the new Hornby facility.
is being undertaken to help
educate councillors and
community groups on the new
facility.
Following the visit, Prebbleton
residents are invited to attend
the Greater Hornby Residents
Association meeting on January
28, where Ecogas representatives
will speak and answer questions.
Elms said she was looking
forward to seeing the plants
in operation and asking the
questions she has about how the
odours from the waste are kept
indoors.
“What we want to do is be
better informed so that we
can get the facts rather than
opinion,” Elms said.
“The main thing is the smell,
and whether what they’ve got
in place is actually going work.
Because it is all very well being
a covered-in thing but at some
stage, you’ve got to open the
door for a truck.”
Elms said she was unaware
of the plan for the new plant
until it was voted on by the city
council in December.
The plant is still required to
go through the Environment
Canterbury resource consent
process.
An ECan spokesperson said
they couldn’t comment because
a resource consent application is
yet to be received.
Said city council resource
recovery manager Dr Alex
McNeil: “This trip is an
opportunity for the leaders in
the Christchurch communities
to see first-hand the production
facilities that Ecogas are
operating in the North Island
and further understand how
these facilities are meeting
commercial demand for organic
processing, biofertiliser and
renewable energy production.”
Sculpture last act of committee
• By Daniel Alvey
A NEW sculpture has marked
the final act for the dissolved
Lincoln Community Committee.
The sculpture, Interdimensional
by Christchurch-based sculptor
Matt Williams, has found its
place outside Lincoln Library.
Williams said
the sculpture
was made of
black marble
from Tākaka
and weighed
about 350kg,
plus the 80kg
steel rod supporting
it.
The project
Matt
Williams
cost $20,000 – $16,000 for the
sculpture itself, and the rest for
installation costs.
A total of $15,000 was covered
by funds remaining in the committee’s
discretionary fund. A
further $5000 for the purchase
and installation came from the
Lincoln Community Trust.
The council also assisted with
groundwork.
The committee picked the
sculpture from the selected works
at the Tai Tapu Sculpture Garden
that were within its price range.
Former committee representative
Ralph Scott helped facilitate
the installation, six months after
the committee was disestablished
along with all other community
committees in the district.
“It had to be something tough
enough to live outside and be able
to be touched by people,” Scott
said.
While active, the committee
was focused on installing public
art, Scott said.
In 2018, it had a Bing Dawe
sculpture installed next to the
library.
“The town didn’t really have
anything before then,” Scott said.
Williams works in a range of
materials including bronze, timbers,
marble, concrete and steel.
He said the sculpture was part
of a larger collection of work.
“A lot of my work is geometric
style, and I have been doing some
large stone pieces,” he said.
Williams said he often thinks
of the name as he is sculpting the
piece. “It sort of names itself.”
The sculpture replaced a millstone,
which is expected to be
installed near the Liffey Stream.
Meanwhile, another sculpture
spot on Gerald St remains empty.
It had displayed a Llew Summers
work, Ariel, loaned from the
sculpture garden as part of enhancing
the main street and sold
in June for $122,000 to a Selwyn
resident.
Another Matt Williams was to
replace it, but that sculpture has
since become unavailable.
A council spokesperson said
alternative options are being
investigated.
Organic
college
moves out
of district
THE ORGANIC College will
move out of the district after
almost 50 years.
The college, established on
Lincoln University farmland in
1976, will move to the Climate
Action Campus on Woodham
Rd, Christchurch, where it will
offer courses from late February.
Organic College Trust chair
Penny Platt said the move opens
up a new era for the college.
“We will be more central and
accessible for everyone who
seeks knowledge and skills to
grow food in the most natural
and sustainable ways, whether
they’re working in local food
systems or bigger organics,”
Platt said.
Climate Action Campus
founder, former Christchurch
mayor, Vicki Buck, said the college
is a valued addition to the
campus. She said food security
is a top priority for the campus.
“The more knowledge and
skill people gain on growing,
soil, composting, and all other
aspects of local food production
and supply, the more we will
be able to withstand the shocks
that come more frequently and
severely with climate change.”
into a solar panel wasteland.
Why wasteland you say? Because
solar panels produce unreliable
power for approximately 25
years.
They then become a nightmare
to dispose of as they are not
commercially viable to recycle
and contain heavy metals and
other nasty chemicals that can
leach into the land and possibly
get into our waterways.
If KeaX wants to build a
large solar power station, it
could make use of rooftops of
existing large buildings and
cover parking lots with a roof of
solar panels with cars parking
underneath. Many things are
possible. They don’t need to turn
our great farmland into a sea of
glass and steel.
Rates rise
In a recent issue (Selwyn
Times, December 13) you warn
of the ‘massive rates rise on
cards’ for Selwyn ratepayers in
the financial year beginning
July 1.
An increase of at least 20 per
cent is suggested by Mayor Sam
Broughton. He blames this on
rising interest rates, inflation,
and taking on more staff. While
SOLAR FARM: A map of the proposed venture near Leeston.
Right – protesters attached a sign to the outside of the
Brookside substation in December.
the first two are clearly out of
his control, the third is not. Yes,
the district is growing fast which
requires more staffing but there
are several other factors contributing.
First, there is the council’s
campaign against volunteers,
which has gone on for a few years
now. It was highlighted most at
the end of the last financial year
when council abolished all the
community committees with local
knowledge which had looked
after local communities. These
were formally incorporated in
council processes and have been
replaced by residents’ associations,
if communities form them,
which do not have the right to be
heard.
Their contributions have had
to be replaced by paid council
officers. Similarly, volunteer library
helpers have gone too. The
voluntary contributions were
cost-free, save for an annual pre-
Christmas function recognising
their efforts, but those were
stopped too a couple of years ago.
Volunteers are not under
the control of council and may
be perceived as a source of
liability, but at least they were
contributing to communitybuilding,
which staff living in
Christchurch do not.
Another issue is council’s
further restructuring.
We want to hear your views
on the issues affecting life
in Selwyn
Send emails to:
barry@starmedia.kiwi
Restructuring is not a costless
policy as redundancy and
related payments have to be
met. As chairman of Springston
Community Committee for
over 20 years I had got to know
which council officers were
effective in solving problems
and which were useless. Of
course it was the effective one
who was made redundant
and the other continues! The
effective one’s replacement has
resigned already. That is hardly
progress. I wonder how much
the redundancy bill was?
So Sam, you may have become
chairman of Local Government
New Zealand but you have left
significant staffing problems
behind you. What are you going
to do about it?
Tourist family lucky to escape crash
• By Dylan Smits
A CARLOAD of tourists – one
aged 88 – hung upside down,
staring down a 100m drop, after
they crashed off a road near
Duvauchelle.
Akaroa chief fire officer Mark
Thomson said the family from
Utah in the United States was
lucky to come away from the
crash relatively unscathed.
Their vehicle slipped off
the shingle
Duvauchelle
Stock Route,
and was only
stopped from
plummeting
100m by
trees which
Mark
Thomson
brought the car
to a halt.
When
Thomson’s crew got to the scene,
the driver had managed to get out
of the vehicle but the rest of the
passengers were trapped inside.
“They were hanging upside
down staring down that drop,
so they were very scared and
worried,” said Thomson.
“If the trees weren’t there, they
would have carried on for quite
some time. It would have been a
completely different result.”
The group were relatively
unscathed after the ordeal.
When firefighters got to the
scene it was clear the car could
still fall.
“They weren’t safe from falling
until we used the winch to secure
the vehicle. They calmed down a
bit, but even then they were still
very worried,” said Thomson.
The family was about 300m
from the Duvauchelle settlement
when the car’s outer wheels went
into a soft edge of the gravel road,
causing it to slip 2m down a steep
drop, where it came to a rest
against the trees.
The middle-aged male driver
escaped the car but his four
passengers had to be freed by the
fire crew using the jaws of life.
The rescue took just under an
hour.
“They were very shaken up
about it. Our job was just to keep
them calm until we could get
them out,” said Thomson.
“They were very, very relieved
TRAPPED:
The family of
five tourists
were not
injured
when their
vehicle
crashed on
the shingle
road near
Duvauchelle.
and very grateful. They couldn’t
believe we were volunteers.”
Thomson said the 88-year-old
managed to get herself out when
a window was removed by the
fire crew.
Thomson said he supports
additional signage on the stock
route, warning drivers about the
risks of the soft edging.
He said GPS can cause issues
by guiding motorists on the
shortest routes, which might not
always be the safest.
“What you’ve got to do is put
in the shortest route, excluding
gravel.
“A lot of tourists don’t think
about GPS, it will take you the
shortest route no matter what the
road’s like.”
Akaroa police senior constable
Anita Osborne said the major
factor contributing to the crash
was the condition of the road
edge.
She said the driver
was not speeding or being
careless.
Maintenance of unpaved
back roads like the Duvauchelle
Stock Route can push gravel to
the edge, making the road look
wider, said Osborne.
“The grass grows up and looks
like a solid part and it isn’t. A
drive past road inspection doesn’t
always pick this up.”
City council streets
maintenance manager Steve Guy
said council engineers assessed
the site and are considering what
could be done to strengthen the
road’s edge.
“Additional signage and sight
rails are being considered,” said
Guy.
Osborne said city council
contractors have set up a
temporary warning sign at the
crash site at her request.
SAFE: Girl, who
has recovered
from her near
death experience,
with owner
Kate Robinson.
Girl was found
on a couch
in the lounge
by firefighters
feeling
their way
through the
smoke-filled
room.
• By Chris Barclay
WHEN GIRL, a six-year-old
border collie huntaway cross,
was cradled unresponsive from a
burning bach, firefighters feared
the worst.
Fortunately once the flames
were extinguished, they were able
to suggest Kate Robinson consider
another appropriate descriptor for
her beloved pet.
“They said I should call
her ‘Lucky’,” she said, while
recounting Girl’s gradual recovery
from severe smoke inhalation.
Volunteers responding to the
call at Robinsons Bay, Banks
Peninsula, three days after
Christmas, used breathing
apparatus to revive Girl who is
continuing along the road to full
recovery.
A neighbour alerted the
Akaroa Volunteer Fire Brigade
and Robinson’s father, Lee, who
along with other family members,
noticed smoke rising above
the jetty while enjoying a late
afternoon barbecue.
Although the neighbour
opened a door to the property,
dense smoke prevented him from
retrieving Girl from the lounge.
“The smoke was so intense they
had to close the doors again and
wait for the firefighters to get her
out. They had to wait seven or
so minutes for someone to get in
there and get her,” Robinson said.
“When I got there and saw the
state she was in . . . she couldn’t
walk and (was) struggling to
breathe. She was pretty much out
to it and not looking very good.”
A veterinarian, who was
fortuitously in the vicinity, then
continued Girl’s treatment,
administering antibiotics and
steroids.
“She got a couple of shots and
bounced back really quickly,
then she did decline a bit later,”
Robinson said.
“She was really lethargic . . .
coughing. We had to carry her
out to the toilet. It’s only been the
last couple of days that she’s fully
recovered. We’re really, really
lucky.”
Although the fire – believed to
be caused by an electrical fault –
extensively damaged the kitchen
and lounge, Lee was grateful.
“I looked over (from the
boat) and I could see the smoke
pouring out of the roof. It was a
bit unnerving, but never mind,
we’re alive,” he said.
“We were five minutes off losing
everything; we got out of it by the
skin our teeth.
NEWS 15
Dog revived after being
rescued from bach fire
“There was a lot of damage but
we could have lost a dog, a bach
(built by Lee’s father Matthew
in 1953), and 30 years of native
planting.
“Baches up the hillside,
everything was at risk. We were
so lucky, I can’t say enough about
those guys. The fire brigade was
magnificent.”
Akaroa Volunteer Fire Brigade
chief fire officer Mark Thomson
credited his crew for finding Girl
in challenging circumstances
after arriving on the scene seven
minutes after the alarm was
sounded.
“It was a black dog in a black
smoke-filled room on a black
couch so the guys did very, very
well to find her and put BA
(breathing apparatus) on.”
Still, the scenario looked grim
when they emerged: “Its head was
limp, it didn’t look good,” he said.
So Thomson, his firefighters,
and volunteers from Little River
were amazed when Girl returned
from her vet visit while they were
mopping up.
“When she came back every
single one of them was like ‘is this
the same dog?’” Robinson said.
“She was very, very close (to
death). They were all really stoked
she was ok.”
Flower-picking paradise
in Prebbleton
By Isabelle Teresa
Start dreaming. Fields of
dahlias and other flowers
await, of all colours and styles,
and you can choose whichever
blooms attract you. Paradise!
This is what I experienced, on
a perfect summer evening, at a
Pick-Your-Own session in the
beautiful gardens of Kate &
Phil Williams, in Prebbleton.
On arrival at the Flower Shed,
you’re greeted warmly by
Kate – aka The After-hours
Stylist – given a generouslysized
bucket with your name
on it, scissors, and you’re off! Kate and
her knowledgeable helpers are on hand
for chatting and gardening advice, taking
genuine interest in everyone.
Whole fields of dahlias are in full bloom
for picking. You can also roam the
stunning 3-acre grounds of the family
home.
You could see the delight on my copickers’
faces. Many were return visitors,
enjoying this perfect way for families,
friends and workmates to spend time
together. Something about the creative
freedom of this event opens people’s
hearts. Faces were aglow, and intimate
stories told.
There are PYO sessions frequently
in summer, at different times of day.
Attendance must be booked in advance -
for dates and booking, go to the “Shop”
section of theafterhoursstylist.com.
The cost is just $40 for a smaller selection
of flowers and $55 for up to 35 stems,
amazing if you consider florist prices.
There’s even an option to buy five
separate visits for the cost of four.
The small but well curated selection of
flower-related items for sale includes
Kate’s cards from The Artist’s Garden
Series, and her highly successful book
The After-hours Stylist, a collaboration with
interiors and lifestyle photographer Anna
McLeod.
After the event itself, you bring the
magic home! I spent days enjoying my
flowers, moving them around the house
in different combinations. This paradise
lingers long after the event.
Water for
Shorter
Work beginning on Shands Road
Intersections Upgrade and Roundabouts
The construction of two new
roundabouts at the intersections of
Shands and Hamptons Road, and
Shands and Trents Road in Prebbleton,
begins this month.
This work is Stage 2 of the Prebbleton Arterial
Intersection Upgrade to improve the safety and
efficiency of the local roading network. Stage 1
was successfully completed in 2021, upgrading
the intersections of Shands and Blakes, and
Springs and Marshs Roads, into dual
lane roundabouts.
Fulton Hogan has been appointed as the
contractor to upgrade the intersections and
build the two-lane roundabouts, along with
the seal widening of Trents Road and the
installation of a water main.
The Council’s Acting Executive Director of
Infrastructure and Property, Murray England
says “We are pleased to begin this upgrade,
improving the safety and performance of these
key intersections to accommodate future traffic
flows and growth in the area.”
“We acknowledge NZ Transport Agency
Waka Kotahi’s financial commitment to partially
fund this project and get it across the line”.
Work is scheduled to begin on 29 January and
expected to be substantially completed by
early September, followed by landscaping
and maintenance.
During the first stage of construction works,
Shands and Trents Roads will remain open in
both directions, however several temporary traffic
management layouts will be installed as the
project progresses. These will be a variation of
shoulder closures, temporary traffic lights, lane
drops, and one way systems.
From late January, Hamptons Road, at the east
side of the intersection with Shands Road, will
be closed for some time and detours in place.
Further updates will be provided closer to the time
along with other traffic management changes
throughout the project.
The hot weather is here and it’s time to be
mindful of our water use so we don’t run dry
this summer. The good news is there are lots
of simple things to do that are good for the
garden, the environment, your wallet and
the wider community.
One valuable tip is to water for shorter.
Instead of watering your garden
continuously for 15 minutes, water for
three 5-minute intervals spaced over a
couple of hours. This approach allows
the soil to absorb more water effectively,
minimising runoff. Watering too much
and too frequently can also lead to issues
such as shallow root development,
increased weed growth, and susceptibility
to diseases and fungi.
NEWS 19
The Warehouse tries to crack
rivals with a dozen eggs for $5
• By Benjamin Plummer
IN A move that may
ruffle rivals’ feathers, The
Warehouse is selling cartons
of a dozen Farmer Brown fresh
colony eggs for $5 in all its
stores.
The “everyday low price”
deal was brought in after The
Warehouse sold thousands of
cartons when it ran the same
deal in December.
“We hatched this plan after
seeing how well Kiwis responded
to the $5 price as part
of our daily deals promotion,
and we hope plenty of smart
and savvy shoppers get down
to The Warehouse to grab a
carton of eggs,” said company
spokesperson Jenny Epke.
The $5 deal rivals all of New
Zealand’s biggest supermarkets,
with the popular Farmer
Brown branded eggs currently
selling for $8.39 at Countdown
and New World, and $7.59 at
Pak’nSave, according to the
supermarkets’ websites.
“We’re focusing on bringing
grocery prices down in a tough
grocery market, and are striving
to be the cheapest go-to
for breakfast and lunchbox
essentials for Kiwi families,”
Epke said.
“We’re tackling the price of
grocery essentials one-by-one
– we’ve got $4.30 butter, $3
milk, $1.25 bread, $8 cheese
and now $5 eggs as another
key staple. The price of food
is a huge challenge that Kiwi
families are navigating and
they deserve to have access to
the essentials at reliable and
affordable prices.”
The $8 cheese is a 700g
block of Mainland Colby or
Edam, which costs $13.90 at
Countdown and $13.99 at New
World stores.
The latest move by The
Warehouse has been welcomed
by Consumer NZ, which says
lower pricing drives competition.
“New Zealand has been crying
out for more players to take
on the supermarket duopoly,
so we’re pleased to see that The
Warehouse is not only offering
sharp pricing to their customers
but on staples like eggs,”
head of advocacy and research
Gemma Rasmussen said.
While The Warehouse
would be making little money
off the sale, it would be likely
to bring in more customers,
she said.
“This is called a ‘loss leader’,
where, despite making a
potentially small profit on
this ‘leading’ product, The
Warehouse will attract
shoppers to their store, who
will be likely to pick up other
pantry essentials or fresh
produce on their way to the
checkout,” she said.
It is the latest move in The
Warehouse’s attempts to rival
the supermarket duopoly after
launching a fresh produce trial
in six selected stores around
the country in February last
year.
The $5 Farmer Brown deal is
available in every Warehouse
store, with a limit of six
cartons per customer.
WEEDONS HAVE secured the
services of English all-rounder
George Hill for the Canterbury
Country premier season.
Hill is
a former
England U19
vice-captain
who played 70
matches for
Yorkshire in the
English county
competition.
George Hill
Weedons
player-coach
Jeremy Benton said having
a player of Hill’s class in the
competition was a boost.
“He’s obviously awesome on
the park, but a really nice chap
off it, which is just as important.
“It was good to have him
involved for the first weekend (of
the second half
of the season)
and we’re very
lucky to have
him.”
Hill, 22, was
initially set to
play for Karori
in Wellington
Jeremy
but when that
fell through,
Benton pulled
Benton
some strings to get him a gig
at Weedons for the next two
months.
Said Benton: “I get messaged
by a few people from England
and Ireland each year – because
I’ve played over there quite a lot
– asking to get set up with clubs
throughout the area or even just
in New Zealand.”
Hill made his debut on
Saturday and helped Weedons
win their first two games of
the premier T20 competition,
scoring 53 not out against
all-rounder’s ability.
“He’s obviously a decent
batsman but he’s a good bowler
as well, so he opens the bowling
for us,” he said.
Hill would be eligible to play
for Canterbury Country in the
Hawke Cup this season.
“We’ll definitely push for it.
Obviously we did get him over
here to play for Weedons, so that
is a relative priority, but I think
there’s a few weekends where
we could potentially get him a
game,” said Benton.
Canterbury Country’s next
Hawke Cup elimination match
starts on January 26, when they
play Nelson in a three-day game
at Rangiora’s Mainpower Oval
SPORT 23
Triathlete to celebrate 10 years of series
TRIATHLETE Sarah McClure
began her career as a 13-year-old
at the Ellesmere Excavation Lake
Crichton Series, and on Friday
will celebrate her 10th edition of
the event.
“I still remember my
nerves before my first Lake
Crichton race, but they soon
disappeared because the event
is so welcoming and has a real
community vibe,” she said.
Since her first taste of the
competition in 2014, the now-
22-year-old, from Killinchy, has
gone on to be a rising star of the
New Zealand triathlon scene.
“Growing up in Selwyn, there
are so many options to get
outside and be active, so as soon
as I got on a bike and joined the
local road cycling club, I just fell
in love with the enjoyment of
being active,” she said.
“The natural extension for me
was running and swimming and
my love of triathlon grew from
there.”
McClure had a busy 2023,
competing in a number of events
in New Zealand and around the
world.
She had a top 10 finish at the
Oceania Triathlon Cup and
Championships in Port Douglas
in May, followed by ninth place
in the Africa Triathlon Cup
Monastir. She continued to
improve her form, finishing
in first place at the world
triathlon age-group aquabike
championships in Pontevedra.
Said McClure: “I feel in really
great shape at the moment, and
I’ve had some really awesome
results this year, so I’m really
excited about being on my home
course at Lake Crichton for the
summer series.”
The Lake Crichton series runs
over three evenings in January,
February and March, with the
focus of the event being about
bringing a quality triathlon and
duathlon series to Selwyn.
The three-race series utilises
the world-class, man-made
Lake Crichton 2km south of
Dunsandel, which is no deeper
than 1.7m, naturally heated to
mid-20 degrees and about 50m
wide.
There are two race distances,
short-course and long-course,
in both the triathlon and
duathlon. The triathlon courses
are 10.4km and 20.6km, while
the duathlon ranges from
11.75km to 21.7km.
The triathlon starts with a lake
swim, followed by a road bike
and then an off-road run.
The duathlon follows the same
bike and run course as the
triathlon but has a short run
before competitors get on their
bikes.
Golfers raise $14k for cancer
after club stalwart diagnosed
• By Sam Coughlan
TAI TAPU golfer Warren
Chatterton is thrilled after more
than $14,000 was raised for the
Cancer Society.
Chatterton was diagnosed
with prostate cancer in March
last year and has been a member
of the club for 25 years.
The club got together to play
the Longest Day Golf Challenge
– a nationwide fundraiser for
the Cancer Society in which participants
aim to play 72 holes of
golf – or four rounds – in a day
to raise money.
The two men of the eightstrong
team, Craig Scott and
Mark Tentori, finished their
fourth round earlier than the
others and decided to keep going
to complete 100 holes in the day
to add an extra challenge.
Chatterton was pleased the
club had undertaken the challenge,
but was disappointed he
was unable to take part.
“I wasn’t able to play, which is
a shame, but I went out there to
congratulate them at the finish,”
he said.
The event coincided with some
fantastic news for 73-year-old
Chatterton, who was told the
following day he had finished
radiotherapy.
“I’ve just got to have threemonthly
blood tests now, which
is really good.
“So it’s been a good week.”
Chatterton hasn’t played much
golf recently due to his health but
said he is hoping to change that
now he’s on the mend.
“I had two nine-hole games
last week – I need the cart if I’m
doing 18 now.
“But I’m hoping to get back
into it and build my fitness up.”
The fundraiser directly
contributes towards services
like transport for treatment,
which Chatterton uses to get to
Christchurch Hospital.
Tai Tapu administrator and
Chatterton’s close friend Tracy
Wills was a part of the eightstrong
team that played.
She personally raised more
than $2000 for the cause.
Said Wills: “I get goosebumps
just thinking about it and talking
about it because I think it’s a
really great thing to get behind.”
Returning or starting school can
Emotional support
Before school starts, organise a trip to
Arrange your child to meet a friend at
a positive attitude to starting school and
talk to your child about any concerns or
address any questions. Talk about the year
When you drop off your child and are
On the first day of school, be there early
to pick them up and ask questions about
their day. Talk positively about what the
next day might be like.
School supplies
Remember that many others will do
the same thing, so don’t leave buying
stationery to the last minute. Involve your
children in selecting new stationery, as this
will make them more excited about school.
Many schools now offer online stationery
orders, which may be an easier option
and ensure you purchase the required
shoes the day before school starts, and
arrange lunch items if possible. Relieve
stress on yourself and your child by
getting up early to avoid the frantic lastminute
dash. Display schedules either
written on a planner or whiteboard or
use pictures showing routines. Things to
include could be how to pack their own
bags, tidy their rooms (especially where
things should be put away), and make
their own breakfast or lunch. Good sleep
routines are essential for students starting
or returning to school. Relaxed sleep times
during the holidays need to be adjusted
before starting school, so ease them into
the new bedtime a week or two before. Be
consistent with the bedtime routine and
take time to talk about their day or read
with them. Turn off electronic devices at
least an hour before bedtime.
School lunches
Does your child’s lunchbox often come
home with uneaten food? Does your
child complain about their “boring”
lunch? There are many ways to ensure
your child eats healthy food and looks
forward to their lunch or school snacks.
Here are some tips for the best-packed
lunchbox:
Lunchboxes
These days, bento-style lunchboxes are
popular, with plenty of compartments
that will help to add variety to a packed
lunch. They encourage a balanced, wellportioned
diet; the bonus is that foods
can be stored in each compartment
without using plastic bags or wraps.
Make sure the box has a good seal on
it to avoid any spills. For any plastic
containers you need for packing, have
two sets for any left at school. Freeze
drinks to put in the lunchbox. They can
double as an ice pack to keep the rest
of the lunch chilled and will defrost by
lunchtime. Another idea is to freeze a
wet new kitchen sponge flat in a zip-lock
bag and use it as an ice pack. If possible,
pack the lunches the night before and
store them in the fridge or freezer. Buy
in bulk or larger bags or food containers,
including yoghurt and dried fruit, and
put appropriate portions into reusable
containers.
Pack what they like to eat
Talk with your children about what
they would like, or even get them to
make a list of lunchbox ideas. This will
reduce the likelihood that the food will
come home uneaten, thrown out or
traded with another child. It is also a
chance to talk about food choices that
are healthy and make them part of the
decision-making. Pack foods they are
used to eating and that they enjoy. It’s
better to put in a selection of options
in small quantities so your child can
choose what they eat for lunch or as a
snack. Leftovers can be a great lunch idea
and can be used warm or cold. Cook
extra and save some for the lunchbox,
including chicken, pasta, and rice dishes.
Using a thermos is great for keeping food
warm. If your child enjoys sandwiches,
keep wet fillings like tomato separate
so they can be added in when they are
ready to eat their sandwich. Spread on
mayonnaise, butter, or avocado to stop
the bread going soggy. Try sandwich
alternatives like burritos, wraps, and
pita pockets. Fruit and vegetables are a
great way to ensure a nutritious lunch
or snack, but they can also add colour
and interest. Pack bite-sized pieces that
are ready to eat. If apples are a favourite,
there are various ways to keep them from
going brown, including slicing them and
putting them together with a band or
soaking them in salted water.
welcomes all students in Years 1-8, and
the roll continues to grow.
The school has undergone
refurbishment to transform the old
included the addition of new decking,
overhanging rooves and new signage.
The school’s vision is ‘Preparing and
teaching and creates a sense of belonging
to centre on the child at heart. Striving
to be the heart of the community, the
12,000 Selwyn learners
heading back to school
Get ready to witness the migration
of 12,000 Selwyn learners as they gear
up to head back to school. That’s nearly
20% of our population onto the roads
and pathways of Selwyn—all at the same
time. Wheels, feet, and a whole lot of
energy will be in motion.
Children’s behaviour can be
unpredictable, so exercising caution
is paramount. Reduce your speed,
especially in school zones, aiming for
30kph, and exercise even greater caution
around school buses, maintaining speeds
of 20kph in both directions. Respect
and comply with crossing patrols; their
guidance ensures the safety of everyone.
To alleviate traffic congestion around
school gates, consider dropping back
and encouraging walking for the final
part of the journey. Physical activity
isn’t just for the kids; it’s a boost for
everyone’s physical and mental health.
Whether it’s bikes, scooters, or
skating, make sure your child’s head is
protected. Strapping on a helmet slashes
the risk of head trauma by a whopping
74%. And adults – be a helmet-wearing
hero too.
It’s time to plan ahead, stay alert, slow
down and drop back. Let’s make the
journey back to school a safe, smooth,
and fun ride for everyone in Selwyn.
Tips for homework happiness
Hearing the word homework can leave
students and parents feeling anxious.
Questions abound about how much
homework is best, why it’s needed, if it
helps with achievement and how much
parents should help. Not every school gives
homework. The type of homework can
also vary from school to school, including
learning basic facts, reading, and completing
projects or interactive home activities. There
are mixed results about the effectiveness
of homework and whether it benefits
achievement. However, if homework is
given, it should be of good quality, have
purpose, and be meaningful. There also
needs to be a work/life balance for students
so that students do not feel overwhelmed by
their learning but see it as an opportunity to
learn and study independently.
Here’s how parents or caregivers can help
students with homework:
BACK SCHOOL
TO
Rolleston College growth
Selwyn’s population growth has
resulted in an increase in the number of
families moving into the area, bringing
a younger population and the need to
provide education to learners. Rolleston
College has commenced construction on
its second senior campus to cater to the
anticipated roll of over 3000 students in
the coming years.
The campus is located at the corner of
Springston Rolleston Road and Selwyn
Road. The construction site has broken
ground, and work has begun on stage one,
which involves clearing the ground to
make way for the science and technology
blocks and the gymnasium site. The
construction of the first stage is currently
underway, and the site is expected to
open in 2025, with completion scheduled
for 2028. The senior campus will cater to
students of different ages and stages and
provide specialist facilities along with
flexible timetables.
Meanwhile, the current campus,
which is located two kilometres away,
has undergone several upgrades to
accommodate the growing number of
students. Additional teaching spaces
have been added, the gym has been
extended, an all-weather playing court
cover has been installed, and general site
landscaping, storage, and parking facilities
have been constructed to meet the needs
of the growing student population.
GARDENING
Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz
Keeping the
PHOTO: GETTY
Don’t give up
on fresh veges
garden fresh
for summer
HERE IN THE southern
hemisphere, the Christmas and
New Year holidays probably arrive
at the worst possible time for the
garden, especially the summer vege
garden.
At this time of the year,
temperatures are normally
high and there is little or no
rainfall (although great for
holidaymakers!).
Returning from a relaxing
holiday, the garden often looks
like a serious challenge and in
many instances there is temptation
to abandon the entire garden
altogether.
But don’t give up. There are still
months of warm weather ahead in
which your summer garden can
thrive, especially your vege garden
which can continue to produce
plenty of fresh food for the table.
Preparation of beds before
planting is always one of the keys
to success and is never more
important than in planting a
summer garden.
Ensure copious amounts of
compost are added to the existing
soil prior to planting or sowing
seeds, then mulch around the
young plants with more compost.
This will improve the soil texture as
well as helping retain moisture.
Replant quick maturing
veges such as spinach, rocket,
radish, salad greens and dwarf
beans.
Revitalise existing
tomato and bean plants by adding
compost, removing old growth and
applying a side dressing of fertiliser
(water it in well).
Applying mulch and feed around
your vegetable plants will not only
improve soil water retention but
will also help suppress weeds.
Provide shelter to the more
exposed parts of your garden as
hot winds dry soils very quickly
and can cause ‘stress’ to young
plants.
Be vigilant with insects in the
garden. When temperatures rise,
pests such as aphids, white fly and
passion fly hopper can multiply at
an astounding rate.
Conserve water – While
we may not reach Australian
levels of urgency with water
shortages, the eco-messages
are just going to get tougher
from now on. Take a good look
at how you use water in your
garden and make some plans.
This might be the year you
invest in a rain water tank to
capture all that free wet stuff,
and to review the sprinkler
system timing and spacing (so
you don’t waste water spraying
paths and so forth). Whatever
your method, be sparing with
the frequency of watering –
established plants need only 30
minutes of water once or twice
a week, vegetables more. Check
the soil at 100mm first.
Mulch to save work –
Mulch is the instant makeover.
It suppresses weeds, makes a
As we move through summer, keep the garden
looking fresh with these simple tips.
tired garden look fresh and
slows water evaporation.
But only apply it once the soil
is good and wet, as otherwise it
will not help your plants. Leave
breathing room around trunks
and shrubs to avoid fungus
infections.
Plant locally – Native
plants are perfectly adapted
to local sun, rain and wind
conditions, so they look after
themselves. Planting natives
is not just about restoring the
environment and looks, it is also
a handy way of reducing hard
work.
Mow lightly – In the
summer lawns do best when
the grass is longer (about 25-
30mm). The soil and roots are
shaded so the lawn does not get
sunburnt and more moisture is
retained. If you can, leave clippings
on the lawn to help conserve
soil moisture and feed it.
Add water – There is
nothing like water to enhance a
garden. While a full-scale water
feature can get expensive, garden
centres sell small plug-andgo
bubbling water bowls and
sculptures which do not need
elaborate construction. Add a
few plants and you have a tiny
tropical paradise.
Create shady spots – If
your deck gets the full blaze of
sun, look at creating a secondary
area for relaxing in the heat of
the day. Deciduous trees may
take a while to grow, but a
pergola with removable shade
sails, or a market umbrella that
hangs from a wall or fence are
good summer solutions that can
be packed away when you need
to soak up winter rays.
Make your mark with new art
courses at Risingholme
For almost 80 years Risingholme Learning has been
delivering adult and community courses that help people
expand their skills and explore their creative side. 2024
is no different with a lineup of new creative art courses
including printmaking, collage, and bookmaking. Taking
the humble art materials of paper and ink, each course
dives into the creative potential of each of these materials
and the various techniques that can be applied to turn a
blank piece of paper into a truly unique work of art.
In Printmaking for Beginners, learners will try a
range of printmaking techniques including stamping,
monotype, and intaglio prints. Course tutor Meg Nicoll
says that “with an emphasis on experimentation and fun,
this course will be a friendly introduction to printmaking
that will celebrate both the making and sharing of prints
without needing lots of specialist equipment”.
Also in keeping with the spirit of resourcefulness,
those enrolled in Collage for Beginners will be guided
through different techniques used to create textured and
painted papers that can then be cut, pasted, swapped, and
arranged into collages which emphasise each person’s
creative flair. For those interested in a more collaborative
approach, there will also be the chance to contribute to a
group collage throughout the 8-week course.
Rounding off the new course offerings is a weekend
workshop, also run by Meg, on Bookmaking for
Beginners. Having previously worked at the Eric Carle
Museum of Picture Book Art in the USA, Meg is very
familiar with the book format and will lead participants
through how to create colourful bindings out of folded
and sewn paper with lots of room for personalization.
All of these courses are deigned to be accessible
with no previous art-making experience required, so
enrol today and ‘book’ your spot early. Find all the
details and search for other courses we offer at
www.risingholme.org.nz.

Equestrians and Engineers
This property is five kilometres from Oxford and comprises 4ha, subdivided into 10 paddocks, with a central race, on free
draining, but productive soil. The 202m² three bedroom, plus office home, includes an open plan living area, heated by an
Osburn wood-burner, complete with wet-back. Built in 2012 it has a large master with ensuite and walk in robe, modern
kitchen and a good size double, internal access garage. Near the house there is a 75m2 studio, which has a COA. Other
improvements include a 6 bay shed, which is 6 metres x27 metres. This includes two loose boxes and has been wired with
multiple lights and power points, with three phase power to the switch board. There is an additional 9m x 27m six bay shed,
three bays of which are fully lockable. Both sheds have very high studs, which allows for car hoists and large machinery. Three
large water tanks hold 80,000 litres and there are troughs in each paddock. Shelter and privacy are also features of this lovely
property, with the house set well back from the road on a back section it cuts down any road noise. Options here include calf
rearing, engineering, car collection storage or equestrian pursuits.
Captivating Canterbury property
A picture is worth a thousand words. This unique property sits 350 metres above sea level, with a bird's eye view of the
ever-changing weather patterns that dominate the breathtaking Canterbury Plains and the majestic Port Hills. To the
back of the property are the rolling downs of a historic sheep and beef station and Lees Valley beyond. Ashley Gorge,
Ryde Falls, and the Wharfedale Track are 7km and 11km away respectively, giving further scope to enjoy this
beautiful and unique rural region. This home was designed in 2021 by a local architect and offers a blend of style and
functionality, with a view to future-proofing. There is a large ensuite in addition to a generous family bathroom. The
heart of the home has a separate utility room/laundry adjacent to the kitchen, and a versatile study/home office is
nestled between the lounge and family room. The home is heated by a well-situated wood burner and a very efficient
underfloor heating system, air conditioning ensures year-round comfort. A bonus to this property is the four-bay
enclosed workshop/implement shed which can easily be converted for stock or storage as needed. There is
approximately 1.2ha of effective land and the remaining 3ha is scrubland with pockets of pine trees. This unique
Beating the heat
15
As we know, New Zealand has been
experiencing warmer weather than
usual, with previously-held temperature
records being broken. Not everyone has
air conditioning, so what other reliable
cooling solutions are there to combat the
rising temperatures? Cooling fans have
emerged as a popular and energy-efficient
choice to keep spaces comfortable in
homes.
The demand for cooling fans in New
Zealand has increased notably. Nowadays,
there is an extensive range of options in
terms of design and price. One of the
primary advantages of cooling fans in
New Zealand homes is their versatility
and adaptability, from ceiling fans to
tower fans and pedestal fans. Depending
on your living space and the effectiveness
of cooling required, homeowners can
choose the type that best suits their needs.
During the summer months, cooling
fans can prove to be essential. Portable
fans can create a refreshing breeze that
helps combat the heat when strategically
placed in living rooms, bedrooms, and
even kitchens. You can focus on cooling
areas where it is needed most at any
given time. This flexibility means targeted
comfort without needing a centralised
cooling system. They can also be used
alongside air conditioning; however,
they will likely consume less energy
than air conditioning units. Therefore,
cooling fans can efficiently circulate air to
maintain a comfortable temperature costeffectively.
Ceiling fans are a popular choice for
many New Zealand homes as, unlike
pedestal or desk fans, they don’t take
up space on the floor or desk. Apart
from their cooling function, some come
equipped with lighting, adjustable speeds,
and reversible motors for year-round
use. Ceiling fans are a great way to help
distribute cool air more evenly, whereas
air conditioners do not always circulate air
to the same extent.
Many recent cooling fans have been
designed with energy efficiency in
mind, along with using new advanced
technology to offer enhanced features.
This includes blade designs, the capability
of purifying the air, and the ability to be
remotely controlled or provide misting
while cooling. You get all the bells and
whistles to keep you cool more easily.
Whether you are looking to save money
or help the environment, and of course,
stay cool, cooling fans provide a flexible,
reliable and energy-efficient means to do
just that.
