Wednesday January 17 2024 Selwyn Times Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz Sculpture last act of committee • By Daniel Alvey A NEW sculpture has marked the final act for the dissolved Lincoln Community Committee. The sculpture, Interdimensional by Christchurch-based sculptor Matt Williams, has found its place outside Lincoln Library. Williams said the sculpture was made of black marble from Tākaka and weighed about 350kg, plus the 80kg steel rod supporting it. The project Matt Williams cost $20,000 – $16,000 for the sculpture itself, and the rest for installation costs. A total of $15,000 was covered by funds remaining in the committee’s discretionary fund. A further $5000 for the purchase and installation came from the Lincoln Community Trust. The council also assisted with groundwork. The committee picked the sculpture from the selected works at the Tai Tapu Sculpture Garden that were within its price range. Former committee representative Ralph Scott helped facilitate the installation, six months after the committee was disestablished along with all other community committees in the district. “It had to be something tough enough to live outside and be able to be touched by people,” Scott said. While active, the committee was focused on installing public art, Scott said. In 2018, it had a Bing Dawe sculpture installed next to the library. “The town didn’t really have anything before then,” Scott said. Williams works in a range of materials including bronze, timbers, marble, concrete and steel. He said the sculpture was part of a larger collection of work. “A lot of my work is geometric style, and I have been doing some large stone pieces,” he said. Williams said he often thinks of the name as he is sculpting the piece. “It sort of names itself.” The sculpture replaced a millstone, which is expected to be installed near the Liffey Stream. Meanwhile, another sculpture spot on Gerald St remains empty. It had displayed a Llew Summers work, Ariel, loaned from the sculpture garden as part of enhancing the main street and sold in June for $122,000 to a Selwyn resident. Another Matt Williams was to replace it, but that sculpture has since become unavailable. A council spokesperson said alternative options are being investigated. NEW ART: Interdimensional, a black marble sculpture by Matt Williams, was installed outside the Lincoln Library by the now-dissolved Lincoln Community Committee. NEWS 11 Organic college moves out of district THE ORGANIC College will move out of the district after almost 50 years. The college, established on Lincoln University farmland in 1976, will move to the Climate Action Campus on Woodham Rd, Christchurch, where it will offer courses from late February. Organic College Trust chair Penny Platt said the move opens up a new era for the college. “We will be more central and accessible for everyone who seeks knowledge and skills to grow food in the most natural and sustainable ways, whether they’re working in local food systems or bigger organics,” Platt said. Climate Action Campus founder, former Christchurch mayor, Vicki Buck, said the college is a valued addition to the campus.
