Lincoln High School
A kura of opportunities
Lincoln High School is full of
opportunities for students to learn,
develop, explore and expand their kete of
knowledge, skills and experience.
Linc Programme
All students at Lincoln High School
participate in the Linc programme
twice a week. They work with their
mentor teacher to foster strong holistic
relationships, learn a range of life skills,
give back to the community, track their
progress and take part in house events and
challenges.
Living our tikanga
Students at Lincoln High School
embrace our tikanga – respect, resilience,
reliability and being supportive. The
chance to develop and demonstrate these
values that promote good citizenship is a
high priority at our kura.
Sport
Lincoln High offers over 50 sports
throughout the year - and if we don’t
have it, we can most likely get it running!
BACK SCHOOL
TO
Opportunities to compete in local and
national tournaments are well supported,
providing students with pathways and
experiences that foster teamwork and high
performance.
Te ao Haka
LHS is all about providing opportunities
for new courses. Te ao Haka looks to
develop proficiency and competence in
kapa haka. This course will also delve into
the history and tikanga behind the many
waiata and haka performed in the kapa
haka world. It has a focus on confidence,
ability, and to increase knowledge and
understanding of Māori Performing Arts.
There are also opportunities for students
to participate in community events.
Te Pā o Moki Year 9 Visits
Our Year 9 students visit Te Pā o
Moki Marae and learn more about Te
Taumutu Rūnanga. Te Taumutu Rūnanga
is the representative body and kaitiaki
(guardians) of Te Waihora and the
surrounding takiwā (region), including
the whole of the Selwyn District, which
Lincoln High School is a part of.
Tips for homework happiness
Hearing the word homework can leave
students and parents feeling anxious.
Questions abound about how much
homework is best, why it’s needed, if it
helps with achievement and how much
parents should help. Not every school gives
homework. The type of homework can
also vary from school to school, including
learning basic facts, reading, and completing
projects or interactive home activities. There
are mixed results about the effectiveness
of homework and whether it benefits
achievement. However, if homework is
given, it should be of good quality, have
purpose, and be meaningful. There also
needs to be a work/life balance for students
so that students do not feel overwhelmed by
their learning but see it as an opportunity to
learn and study independently.
Here’s how parents or caregivers can help
students with homework:
• Give them some downtime to relax straight
after school and let them have a snack and
drink.
• Establish how long the homework will
realistically take. If the task is complex, break
it into easier-to-understand learning chunks.
• Provide a suitable space with few
distractions and all they will need to
complete the work (e.g. stationery). Make
sure there is suitable lighting, and it is a
comfortable space.
• Give simple clues, not just the solution, if
they need help. Be supportive and encourage
them.
• Provide alternate examples and the steps to
work through a problem or task.
• Suggest where and how to find out how to
work it out.
• Check their understanding by asking them
to explain how they found the solution or to
teach you how to work it out.
