Lincoln High School<br />

A kura of opportunities<br />

Lincoln High School is full of<br />

opportunities for students to learn,<br />

develop, explore and expand their kete of<br />

knowledge, skills and experience.<br />

Linc Programme<br />

All students at Lincoln High School<br />

participate in the Linc programme<br />

twice a week. They work with their<br />

mentor teacher to foster strong holistic<br />

relationships, learn a range of life skills,<br />

give back to the community, track their<br />

progress and take part in house events and<br />

challenges.<br />

Living our tikanga<br />

Students at Lincoln High School<br />

embrace our tikanga – respect, resilience,<br />

reliability and being supportive. The<br />

chance to develop and demonstrate these<br />

values that promote good citizenship is a<br />

high priority at our kura.<br />

Sport<br />

Lincoln High offers over 50 sports<br />

throughout the year - and if we don’t<br />

have it, we can most likely get it running!<br />

BACK SCHOOL<br />

TO<br />

Opportunities to compete in local and<br />

national tournaments are well supported,<br />

providing students with pathways and<br />

experiences that foster teamwork and high<br />

performance.<br />

Te ao Haka<br />

LHS is all about providing opportunities<br />

for new courses. Te ao Haka looks to<br />

develop proficiency and competence in<br />

kapa haka. This course will also delve into<br />

the history and tikanga behind the many<br />

waiata and haka performed in the kapa<br />

haka world. It has a focus on confidence,<br />

ability, and to increase knowledge and<br />

understanding of Māori Performing Arts.<br />

There are also opportunities for students<br />

to participate in community events.<br />

Te Pā o Moki Year 9 Visits<br />

Our Year 9 students visit Te Pā o<br />

Moki Marae and learn more about Te<br />

Taumutu Rūnanga. Te Taumutu Rūnanga<br />

is the representative body and kaitiaki<br />

(guardians) of Te Waihora and the<br />

surrounding takiwā (region), including<br />

the whole of the <strong>Selwyn</strong> District, which<br />

Lincoln High School is a part of.<br />

Tips for homework happiness<br />

Hearing the word homework can leave<br />

students and parents feeling anxious.<br />

Questions abound about how much<br />

homework is best, why it’s needed, if it<br />

helps with achievement and how much<br />

parents should help. Not every school gives<br />

homework. The type of homework can<br />

also vary from school to school, including<br />

learning basic facts, reading, and completing<br />

projects or interactive home activities. There<br />

are mixed results about the effectiveness<br />

of homework and whether it benefits<br />

achievement. However, if homework is<br />

given, it should be of good quality, have<br />

purpose, and be meaningful. There also<br />

needs to be a work/life balance for students<br />

so that students do not feel overwhelmed by<br />

their learning but see it as an opportunity to<br />

learn and study independently.<br />

• Give them some downtime to relax straight<br />

after school and let them have a snack and<br />

drink.<br />

• Establish how long the homework will<br />

realistically take. If the task is complex, break<br />

it into easier-to-understand learning chunks.<br />

• Provide a suitable space with few<br />

distractions and all they will need to<br />

complete the work (e.g. stationery). Make<br />

sure there is suitable lighting, and it is a<br />

comfortable space.<br />

• Give simple clues, not just the solution, if<br />

they need help. Be supportive and encourage<br />

them.<br />

• Provide alternate examples and the steps to<br />

work through a problem or task.<br />

• Suggest where and how to find out how to<br />

work it out.<br />

• Check their understanding by asking them<br />

to explain how they found the solution or to<br />

teach you how to work it out.<br />
