TE WHĀRIKI ECE
CURRICULUM ASPIRES
FOR ALL KIDS TO BE:
getting all the fun –
amazing ECE
options in Selwyn
• Competent and confident
learners and communicators
• Healthy in mind, body and spirit
• Secure in their sense of belonging
• Secure in the knowledge that
they make a valued contribution
to society
As Selwyn continues to grow, so do the Early Childhood
Education (ECE) options across the district.
You now have an amazing range of approaches and styles to
choose from, to suit your outlook and the personality of your
child.
It’s no surprise in this beautiful location that a particular
feature of Selwyn ECE centres is their focus on outdoor
education and play. Many offer stunning natural
environments and opportunities that just wouldn’t be
possible in more urban settings.
As you may know, early learning is not compulsory in New
Zealand, however evidence strongly shows great benefits
for the kids. And anecdotal evidence shows that parents and
caregivers, no matter how loving, sometimes need a break!
Across NZ, kids aged between 3 and 5 typically attend early
learning services for around 20 to 22 hours per week. There
are subsidies such as “20 Hours ECE” – talk to each centre
about what subsidies are available through them.
ECE nationwide follows a curriculum called Te Whāriki,
meaning “the woven mat”. The concept is that partnerships
are woven together between teachers, parents and families,
bringing all parts of a child’s world into their care and
learning.
That means it’s important that you go and visit centres
before making your selection – the relationships and
connection that you feel with the place need to be real. All
the centres welcome visitors by arrangement, so see the
contact details in our comprehensive listings on page 25.
With all the expertise and dedication of our Selwyn early
learning teachers, kaiako and educators, and the exciting
range of cutting-edge practice that happens here, you can
trust that your kiddie will be in the best hands.
The hardest thing for you will be visiting these engaging and
colourful places, then having to go back to adulting! Why do
kids get all the fun!!
Melodies
Preschool
‘where the music comes to play’
Melodies is a boutique, privately-owned preschool in the heart of Lincoln
offering a low child-to-teacher ratio with a maximum of 8:1, well below
the Ministry regulation of 10:1. We have chosen to limit our licence to just
34 children, to allow for an intimate and child-centred approach that
readily adapts to the learning and needs of each child.
Situated in a beautifully renovated house, Melodies offers an exciting,
welcoming, light-filled – and clean – setting, surrounded by a large
outdoor play space. In our “Home away from Home” environment, we
create a culture of warmth, care and respect.
We are “Melodies” by nature as well as name. Every day your child
will enjoy music and dance sessions in addition to a full range of
curriculum activities. Music is a huge part of a child’s development, it is
also a wonderful vehicle for other learning to take place, such as building
confidence, developing language, friendships and team work as well as
physical movement skills and creativity.
Melodies Preschool has an incredible team of qualified teachers, passionate about
providing the best possible early learning experiences and care. Our teachers provide
opportunities for children to explore a rich curriculum that lays the foundation for a
life of learning that inspires critical thought, inquiring minds and creativity.
Responsive, reciprocal, and respectful relationships between teachers, children and
whānau are at the heart of all our practices.
We would love you and your family to call or pop in to view our facilities and meet
our wonderful staff. Contact Nicky at 03 325 2227 or info@melodiespreschool.co.nz.
“We looked at several different preschools before we made the decision to send our son
to Melodies. What influenced our decision was Melodies’ low child-to-teacher ratio and
the supportive, highly professional, and passionate team. We are very happy with our
decision. Our little boy is thriving in the Melodies environment, and we cannot speak highly
enough of Nicky and her team for the high level of quality care and support they provide
for our wee one. We have no hesitation in recommending Melodies to other parents.”
