Handing down
your love of
BY ISABELLE TERESA
To inspire your child to read, the best way is to
show them how much you love it. And what easier
way than to share the books and stories that made
you fall in love with reading yourself?
This is a glorious opportunity for you to escape
into nostalgia, reliving the joy of those words and
pictures that fascinated your younger self. The
warmth and pleasure will show in your voice and
attention and your young’un should be hooked on
the experience, whether they are understanding
the words yet or not.
Special books
If you still have some of your old books, that’s
perfect – for a toddler to handle hand-me-down,
taped together, dog-eared books can start to teach
lessons in itself, about age, sharing, and treating
things as precious.
Or if you don’t have them, head to the library – the
classics are still in print.
A special place
A lovely way to make this an important time for you
and your child is to set up a reading nook. Create
a quiet, comfy space in your home, away from the
main hustle and bustle. Cuddle your kiddie and
read or show them your treasured books there.
Let them know that the nook is a safe space for
them to go to whenever they want some quiet
time. They can look through the books on their
own, or they can copy you by cuddling and telling
stories to someone else – their toys, or a pet.
Build reading into rituals as much as you can.
Establish a time in the morning when you always
look at books together, then encourage a time in
the afternoon for them to go to the nook on their
own. At bedtime, the toddler can go and choose
the book for nighttime story that night, and after
breakfast they have to go and put it back so it’s
safe and ready for next time.
A quick note of common sense – you might
stumble across some language or characterisation
that isn’t, shall we say, appropriate in modern times!
You’re in charge, you’re reading it – so change the
language, or if your kiddie is old enough, start a
discussion about how things are different these
days.
If you’re a genuine lover of reading, chances are
that your kid will be too – these stolen moments
from busy days should become treats for yourself,
for them, and for whoever their older selves pass
this on to in time.
in nurturing, discovery, exploration and fun!
As we enter our fifth year of operation, our unique and sought after
built on a philosophy of child-centred learning, through play, that
embraces the great outdoors. Three Trees is underpinned by the
Reggio Emilia approach to education and RIE caregiving principles.
Our architecturally award-winning centre in Rolleston offers our
children frequent opportunities for uninterrupted outdoor play. The
setting combines state-of-the-art design with a natural, woodlandsinspired
environment. We place an emphasis on natural and sustainable
resourcing for children with open-ended context for learning.
By providing our tamariki with a stimulating and flexible environment,
incorporating a range of experiences that promote exploration, sensory and
social interactions, your child has the support and guidance of their Kaiako (teacher) to make safe
choices, problem solve and express themselves.
Our dedicated team of experienced Kaiako support each child to develop their sense of self
through meaningful connections with them and their whānau, where they are all encouraged to
be active participants in their ECE journey. We love to celebrate all achievements with you.
