Getting
to school
safely a
priority
• From page 1
These changes have been
prioritised to make it safer for
children to get to and from
school, following the city council’s
approval of a revised version of
the safe speed neighbourhood
proposal in July last year.
The city council started to
change speeds and signage
around schools in Christchurch in
mid-September, and over the next
two years will be lowering speeds
around every school.
Other areas across the city will
have lower speeds implemented
over the next 10 years as funding
becomes available through the
speed management plan.
Stormwater work under way
REPAIR WORK on stormwater
mains beneath Ferry Rd has led
to temporary changes to traffic
movement and parking in the
area.
The city council’s stormwater
work is under way and is
expected to be completed
by the end of February, with
underground relining work
further along Ferry Rd to follow.
Works include enlarging
manholes on Ferry Rd, which
requires the excavation of
Ferry Rd near the intersection
of Ensors Rd and Aldwins Rd,
to provide better access to the
stormwater mains.
The access is needed for the
next phase of the project, which
involves relining the existing
pipe. Workers will return to
the intersection in March to
complete the underground
stormwater repairs.
City council head of three
waters Brent Smith said the
council appreciates the patience
and understanding of motorists
and business owners in the
area.
“The stormwater mains
work is critical and needs to be
done over the summer while
water flows are at their lowest.
Unfortunately, the disruption
to businesses and motorists
cannot be avoided as this work is
essential. We’re doing our best to
make the disruption as minimal
as possible.”
All traffic lanes on Ferry Rd,
Ensors Rd and Aldwins Rd
will have speed restrictions of
30km/h near the construction
sites, while work is under way.
There are right-turning
restrictions at the intersection
and side roads; there are no
right turns from Ferry Rd into
Aldwins Rd (coming from
the east) and into Ensors Rd
(coming from the west).
Businesses in the area remain
open, and customers can
access businesses via Ferry Rd.
Customers can also park on
Frederick St.
Traffic signals and cables are
also being replaced at the Ferry
Rd, Ensors Rd and Aldwins Rd
intersection.
Safe speed platforms will be
installed at the intersection and
the additional transport work
is expected to begin at the end
of February and take about five
weeks.
