Painting: Beginning & Beyond
This class is a one-room schoolhouse! Beginning and
intermediate students follow a guided study curriculum;
independent students bring their own self-determined
projects. Each week’s half-hour of lecture,
demonstration and class-long practice exercises help
beginners, but useful for students of all levels. Many
students prefer the independent study route for support
in pursuing their own artistic practice. Acrylic,
watercolor, oil, and pastel are welcome. This class has a
culture of studious effort and quiet concentration.

Watercolor
Through lectures and demonstrations, students will
learn the basics of watercolor painting. The instructor
will cover wet-in-wet, drybrush, washes, glazes, and
most importantly, the behavior of water, our complex
partner in the painting process. Students will create
their own watercolors using images from still life and
landscape. Students will also learn about composition,
design, color theory, and a variety of papers, pigments,
and brushes.
Instructor will go over materials needed for the quarter
at the first class. Please bring any watercolor materials
you already have.

Acrylic Painting
Exciting breakthroughs with acrylic paint allow it to be
handled more like traditional oil paint: slower drying
time, buttery consistency, and smooth mix-ability.
Through lectures and demonstrations, students learn
how to handle and control this marvelous medium with
easy to follow step-by-step methods. Class will cover
staging your picture, color theory, design, materials,
techniques, and tricks. Students will create their own
paintings from still life or using images and/or
photographs.
Instructor will go over materials needed for the quarter
at the first class. Please bring any acrylic painting
materials you already have.

Expressive Monotype
A monotype is a one-of-a-kind print. The artist uses
brushes & rollers to apply ink to a blank plate, then
prints the image onto heavy print paper with an etching
press. Texture and depth are created using masks,
plant materials, etc. The process is one of balance,
intuition, and surprise. Explore printing and refine your
ideas with the help of an experienced printmaker! Basic
techniques: additive, reductive, viscosity, chine collé. All
levels welcome.
Materials fee: $40 (cash, payable to instructor at first
class). Printmaking paper: $6/sheet from the Art Center.

Please bring: apron, gloves, rags, paint brushes, sketch
book, image reference materials, textural materials (see
receipt for complete list).
