PHOTO: SUPPLIED Manawa’snew home Manawa the Moa popped into the Waipara School recently to say hello to all the new first year entrants, school pupils and staff. Manawa, who will take up residence at the school, was officially welcomed on to the grounds at ablessing ceremony held as part of the school’s welcome back to all its existing and new pupils. The school’s previous principal Di Officer, commissioned local sculpture artist Sharon Earle to create Manawa the Moa. Lastyear, the current principal Ms Yvonne Blair, worked with Sharon to complete the intricate and ornate metal sculpture which stands nearly two metres tall. Guests at the ceremony included the 2017 Waipara School Centennial Committee, the Kate Valley Landfill Community Trust, Hurunui Mayor Marie Black as well as past and present friends of the school and the local community. Manawa, meaning heart and soul, stands proudly at the school gate, welcoming guests and greeting the children as they arrive at school each day. The annual community event will be held in the Baptist Church Hall, at 111 East Belt, starting at 11am and finishing at 2pm on April 20. The event is aimed at sharing and displaying traditional skills that support resilience, and also promote where and how people can learn these skills. Entry is by donation/koha. The expo is being run by EcoEducate in collaboration with TimeBank Waimakariri and Food Secure North Canterbury. Compass FM is also supporting the event. TimeBank coordinator Mandy Palmer says the aim of the expo is also to build better networks and knowledge about the ‘‘incredible community groups’’ available in Waimakariri. ‘‘There are so many wonderful organisations doing incredible mahi (work) to support the Waimakariri community,’’ she says. TimeBank, Eco Educate, Food Secure North Canterbury, Kaiapoi Food Forest, Back to the Wild, MeadowSweet Herbs & Flowers, which all took part in last year’s Back To Basics Expo Waimakariri, will be returning for this year’s event, and many other stallholders are expected to confirm their attendance in the next few weeks. Silverstream Reserve festival An outdoor family music event is planned at Clarkville’s Silverstream Reserve to highlight the conservation and restoration work being done there. The Boulder Copper Sounds Family Music Event is being organised by the Silverstream Reserve volunteers and Kaiapoi’s Nigel Cook, who also organises the popular Down by the RiverKaiapoi Music concerts. ‘‘The aim is to create afamily music event to spread the word about all the good work being done at the reserve and hopefully have afew folk join in,’’ Nigel says. The concert, which is named for one of the reserve's special residents, the boulder copper butterfly, will be held at the reserve’s oval at 161 South Eyre Rd on March 17, and runs from 11amto2pm. Asimilar concert was scheduled at the reserve last year, but ended up in the nearby Eyreton Hall because of forecast poor weather. ‘‘Last year we teamed up with the Silverstream Reserve volunteers to create afamily music event also ,’’ Nigel says. Local musicians provided entertainment, and gave their time and talent to the cause. This year the music lineups include The Meaniez, Ryan Neville, Fear the Crowd, Tinker, Mudbelly Band, Pat Foss, plus ‘‘five divas’’ who will all perform separately, and piper Ray Harper. Silverstream Reserve volunteers coordinator Shirley Jackson says the event is free, but donations (cash only) would be ‘‘greatly appreciated’’ to continue the work being done at the reserve. There is asausage sizzle, for donations (cash only), and acoffee cart at the picnicstyle event. People attending are advised to take aseat or cushion to avoid prickles.
