Milestone celebrated at Waikuku Beach

Tepees on the beach and the walls of the
club rooms covered with photographic
memories, greeted beach goers on
Sunday morning as the Waikuku Surf
Life Saving Club wrapped up their half
century anniversary over the weekend.
Despite the inclement weather on
Saturday, 130 past and present members
gathered in the tepees to celebrate the
50th anniversary of the club starting
patrols at the North Canterbury Beach.
At the functions: ameet and greet on
Friday, adinner on Saturday evening
and an oldies patrol on Sunday morning,
the members shared memories of
adventures and social events held over
the years.
Club president Duncan Campbell said
it went really well and it was an honour
to have the club’s first club captain and
former president George Soulos and his
wife Dorothy attending the celebrations.
‘‘It was awesome to have them here
and when they spoke after the dinner on
Saturday night about the beginnings of
the club, it brought back many fond
memories.’’
Younger members of the club also
spoke of the great efforts by George and
Dorothy, and many others, to establish
the club, build the club rooms, create the
strong family culture there and help to
make the club acontinuing success.
Duncan says George was involved in
getting the club’s surf boat sponsored by
CustomWood.
Life saving clubs used surf boats
crewed by teams of rowers to rescue
swimmers further out in the water in the
years before the now iconic IRBs
arrived.
On the Sunday anumber of older club
members gathered to show the younger
life savers what asurf rescue looked like
in the 1970s with just line and reel.
Club life member Gary Connor said it
brought back alot of memories carrying
the historic reel down on to the beach.
‘‘In those early days carrying it down
and placing it on the beach meant we
were now on patrol as we didn’t have the
flags we have today. You learned how to
work as ateam and at the competitions it
was all about speed and finesse.’’
Vivaldi’sFour Seasons
Alive performance of aClassical
Masterpiece is scheduled to be held in the
popular Alpine Village of Hanmer Springs,
Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 12.
Vivaldi’s Four Seasons will be
performed by the internationally
renowned, all female, Cathy Irons String
Quartet at the Hanmer Springs Hotel at
2.30pm, in the Grand Ballroom.
Only 100 seats are available for the
Mother’s Day afternoon performance. A
selection of tea, coffee, juices, and
condiments will be available to all
attending. only.
This full Classical Masterpiece suite of
autumn, winter, spring and summer, will
feature three Violins and aCello. The first
half of the programme will also feature
additional, popular works by Borodin &
Mozart.
Seated plan bookings only will open in
February 2024. No door sales. British
violinist Nigel Kennedy created music
history in 1989 when he recorded Vivaldi’s
Four Seasons with the English Chamber
Orchestra. It sold more than three million
albums globally, and was No 1one in the
Classical Music Charts for over ayear.

Intersection safetywork starts
Work has started to install traffic lights at
the intersection of Tram Road and State
Highway 1, north of Christchurch.
Anumber of serious crashes, including a
fatality, over the last decade have
prompted Waka Kotahi New Zealand
Transport Agency to make safety
improvements to the Tram Road off­ramp,
including lights. The work, costing about
$1.4 million, is expected to take four
months.
Traffic lights are already in operation at
the Tram Road on­ramp end on the
eastern side of the Christchurch Northern
Corridor.
AWaka Kotahi spokesperson said the
new traffic signals will improve the safety,
efficiency, and capacity of the right turn
towards Kaiapoi.
Extending the free left­turn would
provide asafe merging space for drivers on
to Tram Road.
Atwo metre wide cycle lane will also be
installed around the free left­turn to make
it safer for cyclists. The Tram Road offramp
will be closed primarily overnight
between 8pm and 4am. Traffic will be
detoured.
