Equine stars will<br />
feature at meet<br />

Two harness racing equine stars,<br />
from different eras, will be<br />
honoured at the Rangiora Harness<br />
Racing Club’s grasstrack meeting<br />
on <strong>February</strong>17.<br />
The day’s racing will begin with a<br />
$12,000 standingstarttrot.<br />
It will be raced over amile to<br />
commemorate one of New Zealand’s<br />
most famous trotters, When, who last<br />
centurywon 20 races, including one<br />
in the United States.<br />
She set aworld recordover amile<br />
on the Rangiora grass track, driven<br />
by her ownertrainer Bill Doyle.<br />
The record was set on March 16,<br />
1963, after Bill approached the<br />
Rangiora Trotting Club, as the<br />
Rangiora Harness Racing Club was<br />
known then, with the idea of<br />
attempting anew world record with<br />
When, just before she left for the<br />
United States to compete in an<br />
International Trot Series at<br />
Yonkers, in New York.<br />
The club agreed to the proposal<br />
and ColoursFlying, driven by<br />
Maurice Holmes, proved aworthy<br />
pacemaker in the time trial helping<br />
When to trot anew world record<br />
time of two minutes six seconds for a<br />
standingstart mile on agrass track.<br />
When, who Bill said was ‘‘a lovely<br />
mare with tremendous speed’’,<br />
made her American debut at<br />
Yonkers on April 18, 1963, running<br />
second to Italian trotter Fitestar.<br />
Rangiora Harness Racing Club<br />
president Russell Latimer said they<br />
wanted to commemorate When’s<br />
record and her role in the club’s<br />
history by holding arace in her<br />
honour.<br />
The club’s historian Robin Wilson,<br />
author of 75 Years, the Rangiora<br />
Harness Racing Club 19462021,<br />
written for its diamond jubilee<br />
celebrations, said ‘‘a mile stand on<br />
the grass is abit unusual and we will<br />
be starting from the chute (in the<br />
back straight) to give the field the<br />
best chance of getting away safely’’<br />
Retired pacer Classie Brigade, the<br />
winner of 21 races, including three<br />
successive Kaikoura Cups, will also<br />
be aspecial guest at the meeting.<br />
He will lead out the $30,000<br />
Rangiora Classic field.<br />
Russell said Classie Brigade was<br />
now ‘‘a rehomed show horse and<br />
showed afair turn of foot when<br />
galloping down the straight during<br />
our Christmas meeting last year’’,<br />
when he led out the Summer Cup<br />
field.<br />
Entry to the meeting is free.<br />
There will be entertainment for<br />
children available.<br />
Aclassic car exhibition is also<br />
planned, including adrivepast<br />
down the home straight.<br />
