NEXT STOP LIÈGE | Innovative page - 11 Mechanics The mechanical industry developed between Herstal and Visé. The Fabrique Nationale, a weapons manufacturer, began an intense diversification process at the end of the 19th century, based on the development of the automotive sector, which led it to manufacture motor vehicles. From 1931 to 1937, the driver René Milhoux and his team-mates (Tacheny, Charlier, Demeuter, Noir, etc.) broke a staggering 180 world records in FN motorcycle racing. In 1934, he reached the speed of 224 km/h on his 500 cc 4-stroke single-cylinder motorcycle. The FN motorcycle was then the fastest in the world. © Val Saint-Lambert Glass The sector distinguished itself with the Cristallerie du Val Saint Lambert. It was founded by the chemist François Kemlin and the Ecole Polytechnique graduate Auguste Lelièvre. They set up in the Val Saint Lambert Abbey. The site was rapidly converted into an impressive village with 180 dwellings. The crystal factory achieved global renown, with 5,000 employees making 120,000 unique crystal creations every day. In the early 20th century, the crystal factory made the two largest crystal chandeliers in the world (3.5 tons, 13 metres high). They were intended for Maharajah Gwalior’s palace in India. Legend has it that the palace’s architect had ten elephants brought in to test the ceiling’s strength before it was installed. © Milhoux Motor Racing
