Comets put
on a comedy
Messenger photos by Dedra Cordle
The Theatre Department at Central
Crossing High School is ready to stage a
loving lampoon of William
Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies
with their upcoming spring production,
“I Hate Shakespeare.” Written by Steph
DeFerie, the fast-paced comedy will
cover some of the classics and instill
them with modern day twists such as
allowing Othello, Desdemona, and Iago
to hash out their complicated relationship
on an episode of The Jerry Springer
Show and having an individual from the
audience try to talk some sense into
Hamlet before he allows the apparent
ghost of his father to destroy multiple
lives – including his own. Potential spoiler
alert for the production: the intervention
does not go according to plan as
showcased here by Carlos Pagan (left),
who plays Hamlet, and Noah Martin
(right), who pulls double duty as
Claudius and Polonius. The opening
night for “I Hate Shakespeare” will take
place at the school, located at 4500 Big
Run South Road in Grove City, on March
8 at 7 p.m. It will be followed by shows
on March 9 at 7 p.m. and March 10 at 2
p.m. To purchase tickets for the play,
described as “hilarious,” go to the website
“By putting a moratorium on it, those places will
look elsewhere,” said Holt. “I don’t want to send that
signal. If they’re here, they can be here, and we can do
business in Grove City.”
In November of last year, Ohio voters approved
Issue 2, which allows adults to buy, possess, and grow
marijuana for recreational use. This law went into
effect on Dec. 7.
Grove City Mayor Richard “Ike” Stage said the legislation
introduced by the administration would just
buy time so city officials could understand the rules.
He said passing the legislation would have sent a message
frustrated with the lack of progress on the issue.
Stage suggested placing a drop date on the legislation,
so the moratorium would end in March of 2025,
though he said that date could change based on state
advancement of the issue.
According to Stephen Smith, the city’s law director,
recreational marijuana is technically legal, however no
licenses have been issued and there is no framework in
place by the state on how to issue the license.
“It appears legislators are planning to make substantive
changes to the law,” said Smith. “If anything,
I think it’s become more unclear. This (legislation)
would in essence just put it on hold until we knew
what the state was going to do.”
While the passage of Issue 2 legalizes the
recreational use of marijuana, it does not
amend the constitution, giving legislators
the ability to make changes to the law.
Smith said the legislation would buy the
city time to understand the rules when it is
decided.
“It is legal to use marijuana that was purchased
from a legal place, but there are no
legal places in Ohio right now,” said Smith.
Dr. Marie Schiff, who attended the meeting
representing the drug prevention program
Start Talking Grove City, said she supports
placing a moratorium on the cultivation,
processing, and retail sales of marijuana.
“There is no community in this country
that has not been touched by addiction,” she
said.
Though the measure failed to advance in
Grove City, two council members (Rodney
Dew and Christine Houk) voted in favor of
the moratorium on marijuana sales and processing.
Council president Houk said many residents
have questions on the topic but no one
has the answers.
“We don’t know the mechanics and we
don’t know the framework. We have no business
greenlighting something today until we
get the answers,” said Houk.
The rest of the council members disagreed.
“If the council puts layers in place, people
will see this as once again government subverting
the will of the people,” said councilman
Mark Sigrist.
Council members did discuss postponing
the legislation until July, but decided to
move forward without delay.

Honoring Black History
As we celebrate Black History Month, let us not only reflect
on the past but also commit ourselves to building
a brighter future. As your State Senator, I am honored
to stand in solidarity with you during Black History
Month, a time dedicated to commemorating the resilience,
achievements, and cultural richness of the
Black community. This month serves as a poignant reminder
of the struggles and triumphs that have shaped
our nation. From the courageous leaders of the Civil
Rights Movement to the trailblazing innovators who
have revolutionized every facet of society, Black Americans
have left an indelible mark on our collective consciousness.
Their unwavering determination in the face
of adversity and their relentless pursuit of justice continue
to inspire us all.
However, Black History Month is not merely a time for
reflection; it is a call to action. At the community level,
there are countless ways to honor Black History Month
and contribute to its celebration. Here are a few suggestions:
Support Black-Owned Businesses.
Patronize Black-owned businesses in your community
and amplify their voices through social media and
word-of-mouth recommendations. By investing in the
economic success of Black entrepreneurs, we can promote
economic empowerment and foster a more equitable
society.
Attend public hearings and meetings where issues
affecting black communities are discussed.
These hearings provide an opportunity for community
members to voice their concerns, share their experiences,
and advocate for change directly to lawmakers
and policymakers. By showing up and speaking out,
you can ensure all voices and perspectives are heard
and considered in the decision-making process.
Engage directly with your elected officials.
Writing letters, making phone calls, and scheduling
meetings with local government officials and state legislators
are all powerful tools for advocacy. Building relationships
with your elected officials and holding us
accountable can help drive positive change from the
ground up.
Get involved with local organizations and advocacy
groups actively working to address issues facing
black communities.
These groups often have deep connections and relationships
with state government officials and can provide
valuable insights and support for your advocacy
efforts. By collaborating with problem solvers who are
dedicated to advancing black communities, you can
amplify your impact and contribute to meaningful
change in your community and beyond.
Together, let us strive to create a society where every
individual is valued, respected, and empowered to live
up to their fullest God-given potential. By honoring the
legacy of Black Americans, we can forge a more just and
unified future for generations to come.
South-Western Schools to buy 10 new school buses
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
South-Western City School officials
have ordered new vehicles for one of its
most vital service departments.
At its meeting on Feb. 12, the board of
education announced it had accepted a bid
from Cardinal Bus Sales and Service Inc.
that will allow the district to obtain 10 new
school buses for the transportation department
at a cost of $1.18 million.
Under the terms of the agreement, the
district will receive:
•Four 78-passenger school buses
•Three 48-passenger buses with lifts
•Two 30-passenger buses with lifts
•One 30-passenger bus
The board will also allocate an additional
$29,400 to provide radio mounting services
with programming and digital video
systems for each of the new school buses.
The resolution to approve the purchase
of 10 new school buses does not mean there
is an immediate need to replace any of the
buses within the fleet, say district officials.
Instead, the move to purchase new school
buses is part of the annual replacement
cycle to maintain the strength of the fleet.
“While the oldest bus in our fleet currently
dates back to 2006, it is important to
continue to cycle in new models that will
come with less routine maintenance needs
and generally increased safety features,”
said Evan Debo, the district’s executive
director of communications.
The district believes the new buses
could arrive next year but they have not
received a specific time frame from
Cardinal Bus Sales and Service Inc. as it
pertains to the actual delivery.
“At this juncture, lead times on the production
and delivery of new buses vary
based on the type,” said Debo. “Some may
be in a few months, while others may be
well into 2025; however, starting the ordering
process now helps to ensure that we do
not extend such wait times moving forward
and stay on time with our vehicle replacement
cycle.”
Overall, the district says the transportation
department’s school bus fleet is in good
condition.
“The current state of the fleet itself is in
relatively great shape thanks to the district’s
ability to leverage grant and financial
resources over time with our natural
replacement cycles,” said Debo. “In particular,
heading into the 2021 school year we
were able to replace approximately 13.8
percent of our fleet most recently.”
According to Debo, the district currently
has 210 school buses in its fleet. They
include:
•66 84-passenger buses
•26 78-passenger buses
•66 77-passenger buses
•47 ADA accessible buses
•Eight Microbuses
•Three 65-passenger buses
A majority of the fleet was built after
the year 2015.
In other news related to the transportation
department, the district is seeking
substitute bus drivers for the current
school year and for the upcoming school
year.
At its meeting last month, transportation
supervisor Tim Cox reported that the
district currently has 18 substitute bus drivers
— eight of which are solely designated
as field trip drivers.
The district is currently covering a
majority of the expenses to help those seeking
employment as a substitute bus driver
obtain their Commercial Drivers License.
They are currently offering full-time bus
drivers $21.39 per hour. Substitute bus drivers
currently receive $19.32 per hour with
lump sum bonuses of $500, $750, and
$1,000 if they are on the job for 50 days,
100 days, and 150 days, respectively.
Those who have an interest in becoming
a substitute bus driver are encouraged to
reach out to the district through its website
at swcsd.us for job opportunities.
In other news from the Feb. 12 meeting,
the board approved a resolution authorizing
the district to seek bids for a contract to
replace the walk-in cooler and freezer at
Jackson Middle School. According to Debo,
the district will utilize funds from the food
services department to cover the cost of the
project. It is expected that the project will
cost at least $50,000.
Traffic calming measures discussed in village of Urbancrest
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
Could the installation of traffic calming measures be
the solution to the vehicular speeding problems that have
been plaguing the village of Urbancrest? Officials say they
would like to conduct a study to determine whether they
would be a help or a hindrance.
At a recent meeting, the village council heard from a
resident who shared her concerns over the safety of the
children in the area due to the excessive speeding that has
been taking place on the residential roads.
“We have several young children out playing in the
yards and these guys just go flying through,” said Cindi
Donoho.
She said she does not know if motorists travel down the
streets at unsafe speeds because they are flat and straight,
but she does get the sense that it is only a matter of time
before a preventable accident occurs in the village.
“Something needs to be done about this,” she said.
Donoho told the council that she would like to see the
placement of additional street signs that encourage
motorists to watch for children. She also said she would
not be averse to the placement of additional speed humps
like the ones that are on the road in front of the Bending
Brook Apartment Complex.
“I know my husband would hate it but I personally
would love to see more speed bumps (in the village),” she
said.
Street commissioner Jerome Johnson said the installation
of speed humps is “certainly an option.”
“I think we really need to act on this because people
have been racing down our streets for years now,” he said,
noting that motorists have recently been seen going in
excess of 90 miles per hour down Augustus Drive. “We
have a lot of children in the village and we have a lot of
seniors who use those motorized carts to get around. We
need to make our streets safer for them.”
Johnson said he would be contacting the Franklin
County Sheriff’s Office to request more patrols in the area.
He also said he could reach out to the county engineer’s
office to discuss the feasibility of the installation of traffic
calming measures.
One of the primary concerns Johnson said he had
regarding the installation of speed humps or speed tables
is whether they could negatively impact the rapid response
times of emergency services vehicles.
“That is something that needs to be considered but we
will look into all scenarios and try to come up with a good
solution,” he said.
Business of the Year
Located on Gantz Road, Tosoh is a humble
business that quietly and generously
supports multiple nonprofits, local businesses
and the Grove City community.
As a Japanese-owned company, Tosoh
has created undeniable value through its
focused efforts to blend traits and values
effectively and successfully from both
American and Japanese cultures. Through
this effort, they have created a blended
work culture and environment that values
people above everything else.
Tosoh’s local roots go back to 1988 when
they occupied their first Grove City location
next to City Hall. With rapid growth
and anticipated additional growth, Tosoh
moved to its current location on Gantz
Road in 1991. Expansion after expansion
has brought them to the size they are
today, with about 350 employees and a
massive and well-respected footprint in the
manufacturing technology space. With
Intel and Samsung as two of Tosoh’s
biggest customers since the 1980s, they are
looking forward to more growth in the coming
years.
When the Tosoh leadership team was
asked why they thought Tosoh was voted
as Business of the Year, the answer was
quick and unanimous — the people. Above
all else, the employees are the most essential
piece of the big picture at Tosoh. Their
employees know the end goal at Tosoh, and
how they fit into the path to get them
there.
A substantial percentage of Tosoh’s
workforce is from Grove City. When Tosoh
employees have great work experience,
they talk about that experience with people
in their circles and the word about Tosoh
being a great place to work spreads organically.
Leadership at Tosoh truly values
employees, taking the time to get to know
them and their families. Most importantly,
Tosoh values its employees’ input and
takes them very seriously, supporting them
and their teams greatly.
In addition to a healthy work culture,
Tosoh’s substantial benefits help attract
and maintain great talent. Some of the
benefits of working for Tosoh are tuition
reimbursement, stability and access to cutting-edge
manufacturing technology and
state-of-the-art laboratories. These benefits
blended with a culture of family, safety,
stability, respect and support makes Tosoh
a place where employees want to come, and
most importantly, stay.
In addition to growing its employees,
Tosoh hopes to grow its already superior
intern program by reaching students from
the community who are in college, high
school or local trade schools that are looking
to learn about manufacturing. Tosoh
will be a strong partner in the GCACC’s
Manufacturing Day this year.
Tosoh would like to give a big thanks to
the Grove City Area Chamber of
Commerce, the City of Grove City, Grove
City Council, Grove City Division of Police,
Jackson Township Fire Department, the
Turkey Wattle and Arts in the Alley for
providing opportunities for employees and
the company to serve and give.
In closing, Tosoh America President Jan
Top and Tosoh SMD President Joe
Buckfeller said, “If you were to ask us, ‘If
we had a magic wand that would allow us
to pick Tosoh up and place it anywhere in
the world, where would we put it?’ Our
answer would be that we would not move
it. Tosoh loves Grove City and is happy to
be here and stay here.”
Congratulations to our 2023 Business of
the Year - Tosoh.
Best Place to Work - Large Category
(over 50 employees)
One of our newer award categories, Best
Place to Work, (Large and Small categories)
will be given to the business receiving
the most votes in their category from
the public. For the second year in a row,
the winner in the Best Place to Work —
Large Employer category is…Tosoh!
The Tosoh philosophy is quite simple yet
impactful — the people matter most. Tosoh
has created undeniable value through its
focused efforts to blend traits and values
effectively and successfully from both
American and Japanese cultures. Through
this effort, they have created a blended
work culture and environment that values
people above everything else.
Each employee is recognized and treated
as an essential piece of Tosoh’s vision,
knowing how their jobs fit into working
toward organizational goals. Through
The leadership team at Tosoh knows
that each employee is a valuable brand
ambassador, and they live by this great
motto: “We don’t ask our people to promote
Authorized Provider
Spirit of the Chamber Award
The Chamber is honored to present our
Spirit of the Chamber Award to Izzy
Benjamin.
Many of you will know Izzy from
Heartland Bank where she works as a
Universal Banker, or from her previous
place of employment, WesBanco. You
might recognize her as a volunteer at the
Farmers’ Market, Arts in the Alley, the
Gardens at Gantz, the Chamber
Foundation, Mid-Ohio Food Collective, and
at events all around town. Izzy also works
as a part-time event coordinator for
‘Storybook Assistance’. There certainly
isn’t much downtime for this young lady —
if she isn’t working, volunteering or serving
somewhere in the community, she is
dabbling at painting or following her passion
of reading.
The criteria for the Spirit of the
Chamber Award is: “The person who best
exemplifies the mission and values of the
Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce.” It
certainly didn’t take long for Izzy’s name to
rise to the top of our candidate list; Izzy is
truly the representation of that definition.
Izzy tells us that when she was in high
school, she was known as the ‘nice’ one, the
one who always had an ear to listen and a
caring, compassionate heart that would
bring comfort. Not much has changed
since elementary school. Izzy describes
herself as “pretty goofy,” but also a person
who genuinely loves and cares about people.
She attributes her kind character and
giving personality to her parents and her
family who she tells us ‘Modeled those
attributes every day.’
Izzy will tell you that she doesn’t do
anything because she has to, she does the
things that she does because she wants to.
Izzy wants to see the GCACC Young
Professionals Program grow, to continue to
serve the community by volunteering and
offering herself to those who have a need.
I have had the pleasure of working with
Izzy for many years and I know without a
shadow of a doubt what her superpower is
— it’s building, nurturing, and growing
relationships. And as a representative for
the GCACC isn’t that the perfect match?
We certainly think that it is — thank you
Izzy for being you and for sharing yourself
with the Chamber and with our community.
2023 Ambassador of the Year
Lenny Frazzitta is someone that you’re
going to want to get to know.
While Lenny is a bit newer to the
GCACC scene he has already made an
indelible and valuable mark on the
Chamber and the community. Lenny is the
VP of Regional Business Banking
Relationship Manager for Huntington
Bank. He moved to Grove City a number of
years ago after having lived in several
places along the East Coast. What brought
him here, you might ask - Beulah Park
horse racing! Lenny spent more than 13
years as a jockey, racing and winning in
Ohio, Kentucky, and throughout the racing
Spirit of the Chamber Award and Ambassador of the Year
Lenny Frazzitta was recognized with the Ambassador of the Year Award.
Izzy Benjamin was recognized with the
circuit. Lenny quickly fell in love with all
things Grove City and when injuries took
him out of racing, it was a quick decision to
stay in Grove City Lenny has one daughter,
the love of his life, and spends much of
his free time playing hockey and not to lose
his connection to horse racing, he still owns
several racehorses.
When Lenny joined the Chamber, he
immediately connected with the staff to
find out how he could get involved. Lenny
joined the Ambassador team, the Benefits
Committee, and the Marketing Committee,
and this year we are excited to welcome
Lenny to our Board. Lenny is passionate
about helping people and in particular, he
loves working with new businesses and is a
master at connecting people.
As an Ambassador, Lenny does exactly
what he’s good at — he makes connections.
He connects people and businesses with
the Chamber and with each other, and
through those connections, he provides
solutions.
Thank you, Lenny, for sharing your
gifts, talents, and time with the Chamber,
and congrats on earning Ambassador of the
Year!

2023 Heartland Bank
Heart of the Chamber -
Creative Mobile Interiors
February 25, 2024 - GROVE CITY MESSENGER - PAGE 11
The Heartland Bank Heart of the
Chamber award was established in 2016
to honor and recognize a Chamber member
business that exemplifies the mission
and values of the GCACC.
This year’s winner now sits alongside
past winners who have brought undeniable
value to the community, the
Chamber, and to those with whom they
work each day. Please join me in congratulating
our 2023 Heartland Bank Heart of
the Chamber Award winner - Creative
Mobile Interiors. Welcome to this prestigious
family of businesses.
Grove City can comfortably boast that
we are home to some of Central Ohio’s
most amazing businesses. Some large,
some small, some highly recognizable,
some less well known, but all contribute to
the amazing community of Grove City.
One of our superstar businesses just happens
to be the Chamber’s 2023 Heart of
the Chamber Award winner, Creative
Mobile Interiors (CMI). Specializing in
unique vehicle interiors, you may have
seen their projects featured at local
parades and car shows, or at their facility
right off I-71.
CMI was started by Owen Connaughton
in 1999. Working in the custom vehicle
conversion industry for many years, Owen
stepped out on his own to start a business
based on his spoken mission: “To never sacrifice
quality and operate with the highest
levels of professionalism, integrity, and
passion for our work which allows us to
exceed our client’s expectations and sets
the standard in our industry.” If that driving
standard doesn’t reflect the mission
and value of the GCACC, I’m not sure what
does.
When the Connaughton and CMI families
lost Owen to a sudden illness in 2013,
the loss was deep and palpable — but
greater, was the desire to honor Owen and
Now Leasing at
his legacy by pushing through. And that’s
exactly what they did. Owen’s wife Stacey
took over as CEO and appointed Chief
Engineer, Josh Gifford, as the new
President. Together, they and every
employee at CMI, including Owen’s son,
Nick Connaughton who serves as CMI’s
controller, rededicated themselves to CMI’s
mission and grew even stronger.
The talented designers, engineers, and
craftsman who work on the conversions
and customizations have an average tenure
of 14 years, with several being with the
company 20 years or more. Building on
Owen’s vision, Stacey, Josh and Nick maintained
a culture of pride, compassion, community
involvement, charitable giving and
fun. Designing and building highly customized
conversions for businesses-large
and small, non-profits, adventurers, families,
and celebrities - including restoring
Johnny Cash’s tour bus, which is on display
at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame -
CMI loves the challenges and excitement
that come with each unique project.
CMI was acquired by Airstream last
year, but the work continues — holding to
Owens’ standards of service, quality and
integrity. Something must be working;
CMI has been featured on the Travel
Channel’s ‘Extreme RVs’, and DIY
Network’s ‘Man Caves’ — just to name a few
- and they are looking forward to potential
expansion as a result of the acquisition.
Nick Connaughton has been on the
Chamber Board and the Executive
Committee for several years and holds the
position of Chair of Finance.
In this world, we can divide people into
two groups - the “Givers’ and the Takers.”
While we will find ourselves in each of
those categories during different times in
our lives, those who stand faithfully in the
“Giver” line make the world a much better
place. Today we celebrate someone who has
enriched and blessed countless lives by a
direct or indirect encounter with our
favorite “Giver” and the 2023 Lifetime
Achievement Award Winner — Marilyn
Reiner.
Marilyn will be quick to let you know,
along with her trademark wink and smile,
that while she’s worked for the Chamber
for a very long time — she’s not as old as the
Chamber building. She has worked in multiple
capacities; part-time administrative
assistant, office coordinator, bookkeeper,
AP, AR, receptionist, member services,
newsletter creator, restroom cleaner, gardener,
snow shoveler, and master problem
solver - just to name a few!
Most of us know Marilyn through her
work as Events Manager for the GCACC.
She has attended and managed nearly
every Farmers’ Market for the past 20
years — that’s around 360 Saturdays —
arriving at 6:30 a.m. and never leaving
before 1 p.m. While Arts in the Alley lasts
just one weekend per year, the hours devoted
to preparing for the event, the Parade,
the Shows, the vendors, concessions, and
entertainment are nearly immeasurable;
spending the night in the Chamber office in
preparation for the Community Parade has
become a cherished annual tradition.
Whether working for the Chamber,
serving as a charter Lioness with the GC
Lions Club, playing the organ at her
church, or serving as the GCACC staff liaison
GCACC. Her sense of humor and infectious
laugh brighten the lives of all who know
her.
Please take the time to congratulate
Marilyn on this very special and very wellearned
award. Her passion, love, and loyalty
put her firmly in that ‘Givers’ space,
reserved for those who love and encourage
others.
Marilyn; you have led us, taught us,
modeled character and integrity to us. You
have, and will continue to serve the
Chamber and Grove City and no one is
more deserving to receive our Lifetime
Best Place to Work - Small Category (under 50 employees)
www.columbusmessenger.com February 25, 2024 - GROVE CITY MESSENGER - PAGE 13
In a community of countless businesses, large and small, with
thousands of employees working each day, childcare — available,
safe, affordable, high quality, excellent, childcare is a critical and
vital component to the success of those businesses and our community.
The Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce is very proud to
announce the winner of our 2023 Best Place to Work — Small
Category (under 50 employees), is Stepping Stone Child Care.
Congratulations to owners and sisters, Ghaida Aqel and Maysa
Aqel and to their staff, team, and families.
This small business with a big vision and an even bigger heart
opens its doors each day to over 65 children ages 6 weeks to 5-
years-old. Each member of this dedicated staff is CPR Certified,
and First Aid Certified, and has passed multiple background
checks. While Stepping Stone is designed as more of a daycare
than a traditional school, every child, from the youngest baby to
the oldest, is taught by an expert teacher who must follow a
detailed, specialized, structured curriculum created and designed
for their age group.
Ghaida, educated in HR and Business Management, and sister
Maysa Aqel impart the vision to their staff of 15 teachers, a facility
assistant, a cook, floaters, and other part-time team members
and continue to encourage and support them. In late 2020 and
early 2021, they began to search for a facility, but it seemed that
every door was closed to them — too big, too small, not zoned for
childcare, too expensive, and on and on. When the location on
Stringtown Road opened, they jumped on it, and with a few more
twists and turns, the rest is history.
This family loves Grove City and they love what they do.
Ghaida says that as she looks back, everything seems very clear —
things work together, and everything happens for a reason. This
very successful sister team is self-taught and continues to
embrace the idea that if you want something and you work hard,
Stepping Stone Childcare was awarded Best Place to Work: Small Category (fewer than 50 employees). Photo
provided by Stepping Stone Childcare.
follow your dreams, and be patient, it will happen for
you. Isn’t that a life motto that we would all love our
children to follow?
When asked why they think they won this very special
award, Ghaida said, “We take care of our team,
good pay and benefits, a safe, clean place to work and
we treat them like family. Same thing for all the children
and their families — we are all family. We get
together outside of work, have regular potluck’s, and
we laugh, cry, and encourage each other.”
The vision for the future is pretty clear: continue to
maintain our reputation for excellence, grow the business
by word of mouth, fill the daycare to compliance
capacity, don’t take too many things too personally,
and possibly consider additional locations. If you want
it summed up, this female-owned and all-female staff
will tell you that it’s “All about love and Girl Power all
the way!”
SWACO’s team put together its Top 10
picks for going green and no matter where
you are on your sustainability journey,
we’re sure there’s something on this list for
everyone.
1. Renovate with sustainable paint.
Sustainable paints, like water-based paints
and those with low VOC’s and emissions
make cleanup a breeze and are easier on
the environment. Water-based paints are
also non-toxic so when you’re done with
them, you can mix them with kitty litter or
sand, and leave the lids off.
2. Try refilling. Refilling empty items
like soap, body lotion, and dry goods at
local refilleries and stores helps reduce
excess packaging, allows you to reuse an
existing item and often supports a local,
small business.
3. Properly dispose of hard-to-recycle
materials. Recycling items like Styrofoam,
electronics, and household appliances
always comes with questions. SWACO’s
new Recycling Convenience Center makes
it easy by accepting all of these items and
more. Visit our webpage for information on
the location, hours, and fees.
4. Use eco-friendly cleaning products.
Non-toxic cleaning solutions are great for
helping to keep the air and water clean,
and your family safe.
5. Winter may not feel like the most
obvious time to start composting at home
but it’s not impossible. Check out our
Winter Tips for Composting at home or
consider an alternative like signing up for a
Food Waste Drop Off Program in your community
or Bokashi composting which
requires less space and oxygen but still creates
a highly nutritious pre-compost that
can be used to enrich spring garden soils or
houseplants.
6. Be an eco-minded driver. Upholding
regular vehicle maintenance and utilizing
your window for air conditioning when
traveling under 40 miles per hour can
improve fuel efficiency, save you money on
gas, and reduce your carbon footprint.
7. Shop smart. Help reduce food waste
by buying only what you know you will eat.
To help you navigate how much to buy,
shop with a list and try meal prepping.
8. Practice patience. If you are shopping
online, opt-in for group delivery. Group
delivery reduces the amount of cardboard
and helps delivery trucks stay fuel-efficient
by creating fewer trips. When limiting the
number of trips per household, delivery
trucks can reduce the amount of emitted
greenhouse gases and lessen their contribution
to air pollution.
9. Polar plunge. Washing your clothes in
cold water helps maintain color. Showering
in cold water does wonders for the skin and
helps boost your immunity. Using cold
water for both helps reduce energy consumption.
10. No wheels (or two) are better than
four. Try walking or biking to work or the
store.
Visit swaco.org for information on
what’s accepted in your homes residential
recycling program.
Story of a Bill,
Part I
I recently introduced House Bill 364, a measure to
allow the noncommercial distribution of milkweed
seeds to promote monarch butterfly population
growth, in the Ohio House of Representatives. Periodically
I will report on the progress of this proposal
as it winds its way through the legislative process,
which is intended to help our readers learn how the
Ohio Legislature operates.
Bills can originate with current legislators (new ideas
that warrant earnest consideration), past legislators
(when a proposal has merit, but does not become
law because it either didn’t navigate the legislative
process or it needed alteration to earn enough support—remember,
less than one bill out of ten ultimately
become law), or with a constituent. The latter
is the case with HB364. David Donofrio, who served
our community ably as a member of the South-
Western City Schools Board of Education, currently
serves as the vice president of the Ohio Prairie Association
(OPA), a non-profit volunteer organization
that promotes the conservation of Ohio’s prairies.
The group has wanted to distribute milkweed seeds
among its membership and to other interested individuals
to increase potential habitats for monarch
butterflies when they reach Ohio during their annual
migration from Mexico. Unfortunately, current state
law prohibits any such distribution of milkweed
seeds. This bill addresses and corrects the situation.
Mr. Donofrio brought this issue to my attention. In
talking with officials of the Ohio Department of Agriculture
(ODA), we learned that they were concerned
about widespread, unregulated, commercial distribution
of various plant seeds and how this could
alter ecosystems throughout the state. We helped
bring together representatives from OPA and ODA
to determine what language could be rewritten that
would simultaneously address the concerns of both
groups. They were able to agree on Ohio Revised
Code wording that allowed for limited noncommercial
seed sharing that promotes habitats for endangered
or threatened species, while continuing to
prohibit widespread commercial practices that
might have unintended consequences.
HB364 was filed with the House Clerk’s office in January.
The House Rules and Reference Committee,
which determines which of the 27 House standing
committees is best equipped to consider the measure,
assigned it to the House Agriculture Committee.
The bill will need to undergo three hearings (one
each for sponsor, proponent, and opponent testimony)
in that committee before its members vote to
have it considered by the entire House of Representatives.
Sponsor testimony is scheduled for early
February.
Stay tuned for periodic updates on the progress of
HB364.
(Dave Dobos represents the 10th District in the Ohio
House of Representatives, which consists of parts of
West, Southwest, and South Columbus, Grove City,
Urbancrest, and portions of Franklin and Jackson
Townships. He reports regularly on his activities in
this position and his campaign has paid for this communication
In Entertainment
Characters bring some life to romantic comedy
Ever since Netflix announced that more
romantic comedies would be coming to its
platform back in 2018, the streaming company
has churned out more than a dozen
original movies and acquired roughly the
same amount from traditional movie studios
who were unwilling to take a risk by
giving their romantic comedy the theatrical
treatment.
For the most part, the romantic comedies
on the stream have made little impact
on the general public or the subscriber
base. The few that have managed to
become instant favorites — “Always Be My
Maybe,” “The Kissing Booth,” “To All the
Boys I’ve Loved Before,” and “Set It Up” —
have accomplished that feat due to the
charm of its stars, without which a romantic
comedy has little hope of success.
“Players,” the latest original feature in
this genre to be released on the streaming
platform, leans heavily on the charisma of
its primary cast, led by Gina Rodriguez and
Damon Wayans Jr. With their megawatt
smiles, puppy dog eyes, and sunny presence,
the duo manages to take this somewhat
middling movie that feels as if it
belongs in the bin of the early 2000s and
transforms it into something watchable, if
not downright almost enjoyable. While I do
not believe it will be considered an instant
classic like the aforementioned films, it
does have some appeal because of the two
Pet Corner
Pets of the week
The Reel Deal
Dedra Cordle
leads who look as if they are having a great
time with the material and each other.
In the film that was released on
Valentine’s Day, Rodriguez plays Mack, a
local sports reporter who has spent the last
decade with a serious affliction — a strong
aversion to committed relationships. To
celebrate her stance on the single life, she
regularly gathers at sports dives with her
small group of guy friends — Adam
(Wayans Jr.); Brannagan (Augustus Prew);
and Little (Joel Courtney) — and comes up
with elaborate schemes to get strangers
into the sack and out of the apartment a
few hours later.
On the surface, it appears that all is
going well for Mack but sad music cues as
she looks at lovey-dovey couples and the
wistful glances she shares with Adam hints
to the audience that things are not always
what they seem.
While at the office of the unrealistic
newspaper one morning, she meets Nick
Russel (Tom Ellis), an acclaimed war correspondent
who is in town to pick up some
awards and do research for an upcoming
book. Taken by his beauty, his accent, and
his reputation as a “serious journalist,” she
immediately wants to run a scheme to get
him interested enough in her so they can
share a night together. Naturally, when
she is at his swanky downtown apartment
that is adorned with pictures of his parents,
honorifics, and dishes that match, she
is instantly smitten and wants more than
just one night together.
“I want a drawer to put stuff in at his
place,” she tells her friends who are utterly
perplexed and a bit repulsed by her desire
for a genuine relationship. But because
they love her and want her to be happy,
they help her come up with a scheme called
“The Moneyball” to snag the man of her
dreams. This involves a bit of light stalking
to collect data on his likes and dislikes; his
morning, afternoon, and evening routine;
and the kind of women he is attracted to.
Once all the information has been gathered,
it is analyzed via pie charts and
graphs and dissected in a way that will
offer Mack the best odds to make Nick see
that she could be the woman of his dreams
too.
Although the scheme may come across
as a 10 on the creep scale, it is set up by
screenwriter Whit Anderson and director
Trish Sie like a zippy heist film. It’s a sharp
and winking at the audience stylistic choice
and it infuses the story with a bit of
intrigue as the film works its way through
to the most reliable trope of the romantic
comedy: That the real Mr. Right was in
front of our clueless heroine all along.
Although there are some miscues in the
movie — the dialogue is a real issue as it
often comes across as a bit flat and outdated
at times —
“Players” has a
watchable quality to
it, due in large part
to the affable nature
of the characters
and how they are
portrayed by the
equally affable leads and secondary characters.
You get the sense that the actors are
having fun with their roles and with the
challenge of making their characters not
come across as sleazy as they could have
been. I imagine the cast spent a few weeks
of pre-filming together bonding over how to
make their characters likeable and endearing
to the audience, coming up with the
“loveable rogue” angles that have worked
in all genres of films throughout time.
Overall, their preparation was a success
and their on-screen fake friendship and offscreen
chemistry worked to make this a
romantic comedy that is batting just above
average.
will treat her like royalty.
Princess would be
a good companion for someone that likes to
stick to a routine and is willing to fulfill all of
her whims. She is moderately active and okay
She even knows how to sit and shake. Stop by
