“A New Cave”, the first solo exhibition by Tanatchai 

Bandasak, turns the white cube of Bangkok 

CityCity Gallery into a cavern of the imagination. 

The space becomes an enclosure, or perhaps an 

opening, both exposed and exposing. “A New 

Cave” invites guests to explore how the artist 

works with matter and space to gestate another 

life, an alternative way of being, an afterlife. 

In Tanatchai’s installations, found objects 

transform into things suspended in states 

of dysfunction, disuse and transition. The 

objects range from a clay vessel’s spout to 

the hull of a dugout boat. From Wednesday to

“Botticelli to Van Gogh” showcases masterpieces 

from London’s National Gallery in Hong Kong 

for the first time. The show features 52 of the 

world’s finest paintings by 50 influential artists, 

spanning more than 400 years of Western 

art. The masterpieces on view encompass the 

most significant turning points in the history 

of art, from the Renaissance to impressionism 

and post-impressionism. On show are works 

by some of the world’s most revered artists, 

including Botticelli, Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, 

Rembrandt, Goya, Turner, Constable, Monet and

Plastics shape our daily lives like no other material,

“Plastic: Remaking Our World” examines the 

history and future of this controversial material, 

from its meteoric rise in the 20th century to its 

environmental impact and cutting-edge solutions 

for more sustainable ways of using plastic. 

It features over 300 objects, posters, films 

and photographs from the Vitra Design Museum 

and its partners, including rarities from the dawn 

of the plastic age, objects of the pop era and 

contemporary designs and projects. A bonus is

LAOS, THAILAND 

TRADITIONAL NEW YEAR 

Thailand and Laos have always been close, 

sharing beliefs and similar celebrations like 

traditional New Year. While the Lao New Year 

or Boun Pi Mai takes place over three days 

from April 14-16, Thai New Year 2024 will be 

supersized and celebrated from April 1-21 as 

“World Songkran Festival”. 

In Laos, the festival still retains more of its 

original gracious character. The best place 

to experience the traditional rites is Luang 

Prabang. Best known as the festival of water 

fights, Lao New Year also offers a gentler, weeklong 

programme of cultural events. Features 

are a procession, a fair, sand-castle competition 

on the Mekong, Miss New Year pageant, folk 

performances, and cultural shows. Events culminate 

in the carrying of the Prabang – the town’s most 

precious Buddha – from its home at the National 

Museum to Wat Mai where it is put on public 

display as part of a water-blessing ceremony. For

THAILAND TREASURES 

You’ve likely heard of Songkran, the 

vibrant Thai traditional New Year 

celebration. This exuberant festival is 

embraced by not only locals but also 

hordes of eager tourists. For an entire 

week, it magically transforms entire city 

streets into lively playgrounds flooded 

with watery fun. This year’s celebration 

promises to be even more spectacular, 

as it proudly marks the recent listing of 

Songkran as UNESCO World Heritage. 

WHAT IS SONGKRAN? 

Songkran marks the traditional start of 

the new year with the sun’s entry into 

Aries in mid-April. Tied to the culmination 

of the rice harvest, this celestial 

event becomes an earthy celebration, 

emphasizing the importance of family 

ties, homage to ancestors, and deep 

respect for sacred Buddha images. 

The Songkran holiday officially runs 

from April 13 to 15, but celebrations spill 

over for a few days on either side. 

While the playful water battles steal 

the spotlight, Songkran’s soul lies much 

deeper. It’s a time for family reunions, 

ancestral reverence, and cleansing the 

past to start anew. The pouring of water 

symbolises purification, washing away 

negativity and ushering in good fortune. 

Witness families visit temples, bathe 

revered Buddha statues, and sprinkle 

fragrant floral water on elders’ hands, 

seeking blessings and expressing gratitude. 

Beyond these spiritual rituals, the 

atmosphere is animated by folk plays, 

traditional games, rhythmic music, and 

sumptuous feasting.

If you happen to notice a tantalising aroma 

on a bustling Bangkok street, it could be from 

a Hoy Tod stall 

Named one of the world’s top three street 

foods at the 2016 World Street Food 

Congress, Thailand’s very own Hoy Tod or 

crispy mussel omelette is a sizzling love affair 

of delicious flavours. 

Just watching the ingredients being 

tossed together on a blistering-hot griddle is 

a delight in itself, and the aromatic pleasure 

only deepens when the omelette is served 

up. But a word of caution: Be careful not to 

burn your tongue. 

Originally a Chinese dish, Hoy Tod’s 

ingredients are easy to find. All you need 

is starch, eggs and mussels. The recipe has 

evolved over the generations to suit Thai 

tastes and now comes in two variations – 

gooey or crispy. Street stalls and restaurants 

may also offer diners a choice between 

oysters and mussels. 

O-Suan, or the gooey version, can be 

found in many Thai-Chinese restaurants. The 

starch used creates a translucent and chewy 

omelette that is served on a sizzling pan 

accompanied with fresh bean sprouts and 

chilli sauce. 

O-Lau, the crispy thin pancake version, 

is usually found on menus of eateries that 

specialise in Phad Thai. This version of Hoy 

Tod is also served with a hot chilli sauce and 

fresh bean sprouts.

Hairy But 

Not Scary 

Don’t be put off by the rambutan’s punky 

looks: there’s a sweet gem hidden inside 

Appearances can be deceptive, 

and nothing proves this better 

than one particular Thai fruit. 

Beneath its punky skin of spiked 

hair, the rambutan (“ngo” in 

Thai) hides an exquisitely sweet 

mouthful of translucent flesh. 

Native to Southeast Asia, 

this tropical fruit is round or oval 

in shape with a leathery reddish 

skin covered in red, yellow or 

green hair. The peculiar exterior 

of the fruit led to its name, 

derived from the Malay word 

“rambut”, meaning “hair”. 

Rambutan began its journey 

to global fame in the 13th 

century when Arab merchants 

shipped the fruit across the 

Indian Ocean to Africa. In 

the 19th century, the Dutch 

transported it from Indonesia to 

South America, from where it 

spread north and took root in the 

tropical climes of the southern 

United States. 

Thailand began cultivating 

rambutan in 1926, when seeds 

were planted in Surat Thani’s Ban 

Na San district by Chinese-Malay 

trader Khun Vong. Nowadays, 

rambutan orchards have spread 

to Chanthaburi, Rayong, Trat 

and Chumphon. 

But since rambutan trees 

can grow in almost any type of 

soil, they are also found in the 

North and Northeast of Thailand. 

In fact, the once-exotic spiky 

treats are now among the most 

familiar fruits in the country. 

Between April and July, 

many Thai rambutan orchards 

serve up a “fruit buffet” where 

fruitaholics can feast on the hairy 

fruit for just a small entrance fee. 

Though rambutan is 

generally consumed fresh, it is 

also the star ingredient in several 

desserts. Think rambutan served 

drenched in syrup or coconut 

milk, or added to jelly. It even 

finds its way into savoury dishes 

such as red curry and pork-stuffed 

rambutan soup. 

So, don’t judge the rambutan 

by its cover. Simply tear one 

open to enjoy the deliciously 

sweet flesh. But don’t forget to 

spit out the seed!

will always vary in subtle ways. To manage 

this successfully, the chef needs to be imbued 

with deep knowledge and experience, and it 

is still possible that the diner will discover 

something new when tasting the food.

Thailand’s Secret Weapon 

Against Summer Heat 

Summer in Thailand can be a battle with the 

heat, but Thais have developed a delicious 

defence: cooling desserts. Loi Kaew, featuring 

sweet and sour fruits drenched in syrup with 

crushed ice, is one of the most powerful 

weapons. Its refreshing flavours and sugary hit 

will make any hot afternoon bearable. 

Loi Kaew is often given an extra kick by 

adding freshly squeezed bitter orange juice and 

orange zest. This version is called Som Chun. 

The appealingly sour fragrance of the juice 

collides with the syrupy fruit drowned in ice 

shavings to offer a perfect pick-me-up after the 

exhausting heat. 

The syrup used in the dessert is easy to make. 

Just pour jasmine-flavoured water over a bundle 

of pandan leaves in a pot, add sugar and salt, and 

simmer until it reaches the consistency of syrup. 

To serve up a delicious bowl of Som Chun, 

you can opt for sweet fruits with a hint of 

sourness like lychee, mango plum, orange, 

longan, salak (snake fruit) and rambutan. The 

fruits need to be sliced finely and soaked in the 

syrup overnight for the perfect dessert. 

Here’s a deliciously sweet and refreshing dessert to ease the 

gruelling heat of long afternoons in the tropics 

Som Chun is ideally served with a topping 

of sour mango, young ginger, bitter orange zest 

and fried shallots. 

It can be tough to find this traditional 

dessert – which dates back to the reign of 

King Rama II in the early 1800s – on restaurant 

menus. But we managed to track down 

a delicious version at Anya Authentic 

Thai Cuisine in Bangkok. Located close to 

the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, this 

restaurant is certainly worth a visit.

Supporting it are the Four Pillars, 

standing strong with the essence of four

and mercy. These octagonal pillars, 

covered in tin, narrate the moral tales of

body and accessed by elevator or spiral 

staircase. The walls are adorned with 

paintings of gods and goddesses,

realm. The ceiling itself, painted in pastels, 

depicts the Universe, serving as a 

humbling reminder of our tiny existences

Buddha’s footprint, surrounded by

Express whisked me from Hong Kong International Airport 

to Kowloon station. With belly growling, I headed first to 

Yung Kee Roasted Goose restaurant on Kimberly Road. The 

roasted goose, infused with tangerine peel, offered a unique 

and delightful flavour profile, perfectly complemented by a 

steaming cup of traditional Hong Kong-style milk tea. 

Having indulged my tastebuds, I turned my attention 

to Hong Kong’s burgeoning art scene, which has evolved 

significantly post-COVID. The M+ museum, situated in the 

West Kowloon Cultural District, beckoned with 20 storeys 

dedicated to visual culture. Accessible on foot from Tsim

The flavour of old Hong Kong is even 

stronger on cobbled Pottinger Street, 

which is lined with local shops 

offering dried foods and goods from 

mainland China. 

Sha Tsui or a short MTR ride, the 

museum showcases a captivating 

array of artworks, design, and 

architecture. Its stunning design, 

both indoors and out, also provided 

breath-taking views of the harbour 

from the café and terrace. 

Eager to resume my 

gastronomic journey, I made 

my way to Lock Road for a visit 

to Mak’s Noodles, a culinary 

institution since 1920. The texture 

of egg noodles here was nothing 

short of exceptional, and I savoured 

signature dishes like Wonton 

Noodles, Stirred Noodles with 

Prawns & Dried Shrimp Roe, and 

Mushroom and Chicken Congee. 

Hong Kong’s culinary scene may be 

famous for its divine offerings, but 

it consistently delivered experiences 

that surpassed my expectations. 

Belly satisfied, I took a leisurely 

stroll from Lock Road to Canton 

Road and the iconic Star Ferry. The 

scenic walk took me past renowned 

department stores like Gateway, 

Harbour City, and Ocean Terminal 

Desk while offering unparalleled 

views of the harbour. Continuing 

along Victoria Harbour walkway, I 

reached K11 MUSEA, where I soaked 

up the arty vibe over a cup of Arabica 

coffee from Victoria Dockside. 

Having explored Kowloon to 

my heart’s content, I hopped over 

to Hong Kong Island on the Star 

Ferry, enjoying the iconic charm 

of the harbour-crossing. Alighting 

at Central pier, I followed signs 

to Queen’s Road, heading for the 

captivating Man Mo Temple on 

Hollywood Road in Sheung Wan. 

This historic temple, dating back 

to the 1800s, stands as a testament 

to tradition amid the surrounding 

skyscrapers, offering a serene 

counterpoint to the city bustle.

guided by Google Maps, I set off 

to explore the bustling district of 

Wan Chai. Here, Ki’s Roasted Goose 

Restaurant left a lasting impression 

with its glistening speciality served 

on rice. Swapping tired feet for steel 

wheels, I hopped aboard a Hong 

Kong tram for a tour of vibrant 

streets lit up by big-brand logos 

and promotions that make this city 

a photographer’s delight. 

A commercial district by day, 

Wan Chai transforms into a lively 

nightlife zone when the sun 

goes down. The buzz is loudest 

in Lockhart Road, where local 

food shops and fresh markets 

jostle for space with modern 

skyscrapers, creating a charming 

blend of old and new. Amid the 

myriad accommodation options 

in Wan Chai, I would recommend 

The Fleming Hotel, for a stylish 

urban boutique stay in the 

neighbourhood’s heart. With 66

from the hotel to Hong Kong station 

and the Airport Express ensured 

a stress-free journey of barely 24 

minutes. Check-in and immigration 

at Hong Kong International Airport 

for Thai travellers proved remarkably 

friendly and efficient, granting me 

ample time to explore the worldclass 

facilities before my flight back 

to Bangkok. 

I couldn’t resist a final stop at 

the eye-catching Blue Bottle coffee 

pop-up, housed in a distinctive 

blue box. With a last cup of coffee 

in hand, I boarded my flight, 

cherishing memories of a whirlwind 

48 hours in this enchanting city.

BANGKOK AIRWAYS FLIES VISUALLY IMPAIRED CHILDREN 

TO DOI INTHANON FOR LESSONS ON ASTRONOMY

tickets worth more than 764,000 

baht to teachers and students at 

the Bangkok School for the Blind. 

Dr. Saran Posayachinda (second 

row, sixth from left), director of the 

National Astronomical Research 

Institute, was also present at the 

ceremony held at the Bangkok 

Airways headquarters, Vibhavadi 

Rangsit Road. The tickets were 

handed out as part of the “Even 

Though You Can’t See the Moonlight, 

You Can Feel the Stars” 

project, which aimed to promote 

learning outside the classroom and 

give visually impaired children a 

chance to learn about the stars. 

The youngsters were taken 

to the top of Doi Inthanon in 

Chiang Mai province to enjoy the 

experience of observing a starfilled 

sky. The trip was held from 

January 23 to 25, 2024. On the 

first day, the children travelled 

to Doi Inthanon, Chom Thong 

district, to learn about temperature 

changes and air pressure with the 

aid of paper bags, and to touch 

nature and feel the mist around 

Wachirathan Waterfall. The group 

was then taken to the National 

Observatory to learn about 

different telescopes through 

touch. They were even allowed to 

embrace the base of the National 

Telescope, as well as visit the 

telescope control room and the 

astronomer’s laboratory. In the 

evening, the group was taken 

to the top of Doi Inthanon to 

experience the model of a moon 

before learning about celestial 

objects like Saturn, Jupiter, the 

Moon, and Nebula through the 

telescope. Though the air was 

chilly, the children enjoyed the 

warmth and joy of the experience. 

Since most of the participating 

youngsters still have some vision, 

they could distinguish bright objects. For instance, 

the Moon through the telescope appeared to them 

as a big, bright spot, while Saturn was an oval shape 

with a ring around it. Other stars or planets appeared 

to them as small, bright spots in the sky. 

On the second day, the group was taken to the 

Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden in Mae Rim district, where 

they learned about the ecosystem and participated 

in activities to smell, see, taste and experience the 

diversity of various plants. They were then taken to 

the Sirindhorn Astronomical Park to participate in the 

“Sky in My Hands” activity. Inside the planetarium, the 

students learned the basics of stargazing and explored 

constellations and various galaxies through touch. The 

spherical device used to teach them about the stars 

came from the University of Valencia and helped the 

youngsters learn the distance between the stars and 

the Earth. It also gave them an idea of what people 

see when they look up to the sky and learn about the 

positioning of the stars.
