The Pursuit of Higher Education: Oakland
University and Chaldean Community
Foundation unite for a brighter future
In an exciting collaboration aimed at fostering the
next generation of educators, Oakland University
and the Chaldean Community Foundation have
joined forces to inspire and support students in pursuing
careers in education. This innovative partnership
not only underscores the shared commitment
of both institutions to academic excellence, but also
seeks to address the growing need for passionate and
diverse individuals to lead the way in shaping the future
of education.
As we navigate an ever-evolving educational
landscape, the demand for dedicated and culturally
aware educators has never been more pronounced.
Mother of God 75th Anniversary
Recognizing this imperative, Oakland University and
the Chaldean Community Foundation have set out
on a mission to empower students, particularly those
from the Chaldean community, to explore and embark
on fulfilling careers in education.
This collaborative initiative starts with an advisory
council made up of Oakland University staff and
alumni along with Chaldean Community Foundation
staff. The purpose of the council is to develop outreach
for assisting perspective student with filling
out forms for admission and financial aid and developing
pathways for students to become educators,
among other goals.
Mother of God Chaldean Church is
75! This milestone commemorates
a beacon of faith and community
in its 75th year of existence,
embodying a rich tapestry of
tradition, culture, and spirituality.
Nestled within the heart of its
community, this sacred place of
worship has been a steadfast pillar
for generations of Chaldean Catholics,
serving as a sanctuary where
families gather to celebrate their
faith and heritage.
Mother of God Church was established
in Southfield in 1948. The current edifice was
designed in a Byzantine Revival style and completed in
1980. Two years later, the church became a Chaldean
cathedral when the Eparchy of St. Thomas the Apostle
was established.
Throughout its storied history, Mother of God has
been a source of spiritual nourishment, offering a myriad
of religious services, sacraments,
and cultural events. From traditional
liturgies to festive celebrations marking
Chaldean holidays and milestones,
the church fosters a sense
of belonging and continuity for its
members, bridging the gap between
generations and preserving cherished
customs for years to come.
Beyond its role as a place of
worship, the church serves as a
catalyst for social outreach and
community engagement. Through
charitable initiatives, educational
programs, and interfaith collaborations, it extends its
embrace beyond its walls, embodying the teachings of
compassion and solidarity espoused by its namesake,
the Mother of God. As the church commemorates its
75th anniversary, it stands as a testament to the enduring
spirit of faith, hope, and love that continues to inspire
and unite the Chaldean faithful.
Sweet Dreams
Habibi
Jacquelyn Faranso Santo, the daughter of
Catholic-Iraqi immigrants and a first generation
American, recently wrote a children’s book
titled, “Sweet Dreams Habibi.” The book centers
around themes of family, cultural identity and
the universal desire to belong.
Inspired by the stories
that her mom used
to share about her childhood
in Iraq and her
journey to America, the
book recounts a heartwarming
story that resonates
deeply with immigrant
families, offering
a relatable and enriching
experience for both
children and parents. The tale unfolds through a
mom’s story to her daughter at bedtime, painting
a picture of her simple life back home filled with
rich culture and traditions.
Jacquelyn grew up in the Detroit metropolitan
area and witnessed her parents’ journey to
build a life in the United States. Today, Jacquelyn
is a DePaul University graduate, a dedicated
wife, and mother of two. She also manages a
travel concierge business while passionately
pursuing her creative endeavors. The story she
shares reflects the cultural mosaic that shaped
her upbringing.
“This book is not only a tribute to my family,
but also a tribute to the bravery, love and
dreams that immigrant families bring with them
on their incredible journeys,” shares Jacqueline.
“My hope is that this narrative contributes to the
empowerment of immigrant families.”
