NEWS The North Canterbury News, March 7, 2024 13 Bridge repair work disappoints community By BY SHELLEY TOPP The repair work done on aFernside pedestrian bridge has disappointed people in the community. Fernside resident Darryl Cotton says the repairs are ‘‘substandard in my opinion’’, with only the missing bridge railings being replaced, and nothing done to address the old failing parts of the handrails. Roading and transport manager Joanne McBride says the council staff do have concerns with the quality of the work and are in discussion with the contractor. ‘‘As we are working through this with the contractor, we cannot provide any Duck race By SHELLEY TOPP Silverstream’s annual rubberduck race fundraiser is set to be bigger and better this year. It will be held at the Tirikatene Reserve, on the Silverstream River, on Saturday March 9, at 11am. Ducks can be bought from the Silverstream sales office, at 1/42 Silverstream Boulevard for $3 (cash only). It is open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. All money raised will be donated to Satisfy Food Rescue in Kaiapoi. There is aduck decorating competition, separate from the race. ‘‘This is to prevent pollution of our beautiful river, so if you would like to enter both events, buy two ducks.’’ further comment (about the repairs) at this time.’’ ‘‘The work carried out to date on the Bridge Road bridge was to repair the handrail which was damaged by afallen tree, and to paint the new section of rail,’’ she says. ‘‘We thank the resident for raising their comments around the quality of repairs undertaken to date. She says the council has 289 bridges on the roading network and has to balance the need for maintenance and repairs across all structures. ‘‘Budgets do not allow for afull repaint of this bridge in the current financial year. Additional budget has been sought as part of the Long Term Plan process for bridge maintenance and further work will be programmed accordingly,’’ she says. Mr Cotton says it seemed ludicrous to him to just patch up the failed sections. ‘‘It is only amatter of time that other sections of the handrails will fail. ‘‘The timber used is of aterrible quality, with numerous knots and holes and Isuspect that it will decay faster than the remaining old railings. ‘‘On top of all this, the contractors have very poorly painted only the replaced sections of railing, not touching the existing, and making it look very patchy,’’ he says. The bridge which crosses the Cust River from Bridge Road to O’Roarkes Road, had fallen into disrepair after the railing began to rot and fall away and it was feared that it would be dismantled or closed. The community made the Waimakariri District Council aware of how important the bridge was to the community, and the council agreed to repair it and keep it usable as afootbridge. ‘‘This was great news to all the people who use it on their walks and bikes, to access both sides of the Cust River. It certainly made sense to maintain this link to both sides of the river banks,’’ says Darryl. In afew weeks the Ohoka Market Good Friday, Great Cake competition 2024 is being held. It is free to all great, aspiring bakers, individuals, businesses and families, to enter. This year once the judging is over at the March 29 market, the cakes will be sliced up and sold, with the proceeds going to Community Wellbeing Waimakariri, to support the wellbeing of families, children and young people in North Canterbury. The inaugural competition at last year’s market attracted about 20 entries, and it is hoped this year’s contest will be even bigger, raising much needed funds for the North Canterbury community. There will be aSupreme award, along with first, second and third. All will win Market prizes. Julie Han’s Peter Rabbit eating an Easter carrot cake, won the inaugural event, with acake made entirely of meat taking out the third prize. Entries for the contest close on March 15.
