Hedge Fest, near Woodend, was once
again ahuge success.
Organiser Liam Goodwin says 40
competitors turned out for the event, the
third Hedge Fest at the venue, and kept
the large crowd of over 1000 entertained
all day with their aerial skills.
‘‘It was wicked, we had avery good day
and the high standard of entrants who
showed up from throughout New
Zealand made it awonderful sporting
event for the spectators.’’
Liam says the later start time of 2pm
helped make it asuccess.
‘‘People enjoyed the compressed
format of the show, which allowed us to
bring to the venue live music later in the
evening.’’
He says the riders competing all
exceeded their expectations, with many
achieving their goal of completing some
very tricky aerial manoeuvers displayed
for the first time in public in New
Zealand.
‘‘Tyler Knox on his BMX bike, once
again tried to take the show with aquad
trail whip, but caught the lip of apedal

on his way down ruining his chances.’’
Blake Fleming won the BMX best trick
award with abike flip. It is avery
difficult trick where the rider lets go of
his bike in mid­air during the jump, and
then it flips 360 degrees before he grabs
hold of it again, remounts and lands
safely. Billie Meaclem and Eamon Rauth
were judged the best overall in their
classes.

‘‘We also had three freestyle motocrossers
on hand, who put on agreat
FMX show, and it was all made possible
by the kind support of Daniel Smith
Industry’s, Erect Scaffolding and
Goodwin Excavations, and ahost of
other great sponsors including the
Goodwin family who provided the land
in Woodend,’’ Liam says. The organising
committee of Liam, Jack Sherriff and
Jayden Stokes are already looking
toward the next Hedge Fest in March
2025.
Woodend wins 5’sbowls
Woodend 1has taken out the inaugural
North Canterbury Bowling Club’s 5’s
competition.
The win came after acountback of
ends, with Woodend taking the title and
the Peter Davis Trophy, by two ends.
The five week round robin competition
wasintroducedtooffer competitive
bowls and give North Canterbury players
an identity of their own.
Finals day was held at the Rangiora
Club last Saturday.
The trophy has been named after Peter
Davis who carved it.
While only six teams competed in the
first season, numbers are expected to
grow over the coming years.
At the afternoon tea and prize giving
all teams were presented with aprize,
thanks to the generous sponsorship.
Corcoran French was the major sponsor,
with Silver Fern Farms, Honda Cars, Out
the Gate Coffee and Trends Kitchens
also supporting the new competition.

Kaiapoi Fun Run
The generosity of local businesses
has amazed organisers of this
weekend’s Kaiapoi Fun Run and
Walk .
Everybody who enters the event is
eligible for aprize, as local
businesses have donated amultitude
of prizes ranging in value up to $500.
The prize giving will be held at
11am in the Kaiapoi Borough School
hall after the runs are completed.
The Kaiapoi Fun Run and Walk on
Sunday March 10, is being run and
sponsored by Blackwell’s
Department Store after being
managed by All Together Kaiapoi for
many years.
Andrew Blackwell, from
Blackwell’s Department Store, says
people of all ages just love the
Kaiapoi Fun Run and Walk.
‘‘They really enjoy the amazing
paths along the Kaiapoi River.’’
The 10km course starts at Murphy
Park and takes participants into
Silverstream along one side of the
Kaiapoi River before crossing the
river at the historic Butchers Bridge,

The 10km walk kicks off at 8.30am,
with the 5km walk/run and 10km run
starting at 9.00am.

of the Kaiapoi River are afantastic
running and walking route, and
