28 The CHEVIOT A&PSHOW North Canterbury News, March 7, 2024 Theme reflects change The theme of this years 110th annual Cheviot A&P Show, ‘‘Grow Cheviot’’ was chosen to reflect how Cheviot’s agricultural and horticultural landscape has changed, and will continue to change over time. Copresidents Chris and Emma Mulcock say that while Cheviot still has atraditional sheep and beef farming base, it also has agrowing range of horticulture, viticulture and livestock land uses in the area. Chris says the theme will also encompass the younger generations who are required to help communities such as Cheviot continue to grow in the future. ‘‘This is reflected with the Country Kid and Country Teen competitions we are hosting as these will keep the younger ones entertained on the day.’’ Staying with the theme, adisplay on how Cheviot has developed through the years will also be presented by the Cheviot Historical Records Society. Emma says the Cheviot A&P Association has had great support from members of the community with each able to contribute within their area of knowledge and expertise. ‘‘The volunteers, sponsors and exhibitors are abig part of putting ashow together, and we also appreciate the time that the judges, stewards and marshalsgive to making the show asuccess.’’ She says outside of the annual show day, the association also holds heifer, flock sheep and winter feed competitions. Chris is the third generation of his family to farm in the Cheviot area. ‘‘We farm acoastal sheep and beef breeding and finishing property and are following in Chris’sparentstime of being presidents of the Cheviot 75th A&P Show,’’says Emma. The Mulcock family will be entering in the wool, cooking, home industries, flower and vegetable sections. Chris says the association is looking forward to welcoming the event back this year after two years of disruptions — the first due to Covid restrictions in 2022 and later inclement weather in 2023. Despite the challenges, acondensed show was held at the school and rugbyclub last year. ‘‘The Cheviot A&P has astrong administration team, backed up with many people volunteering in the convening roles, but we are still seeking presidents and vice presidents for future shows,’’ Chris says. Many competitions on offer at the show Creative arts and community spirit awards are on offer at this weekend’s Cheviot show. This year, the Cheviot A&P Show is offering awide range of creative competitions including Wool, Imaginative Creations, Home Industries, Cookery, Handcraft, Photography and Art. In the Imaginative Creations, where last year's most popular item was the Tie Dyed TShirt, is once again proving to be popular. Organiserssay: ‘‘show us your most crazy, colourful, tiedyed creations,’’ with three classes for children and one for adults. Another new section is fairy doors and again participants are invited to be as creative as possible. Leading up to the show, organisers are also looking for nominations for the Cheviot Good Sort, someone who has contributed much to the Cheviot community, and the Young Achiever recipient, someone who is under 30 years of age, lives and works in the Cheviot district and has contributed significantly to the community. The special competition for this year is Woolly Wearable Art, run as part of the Fashion in the Field programme. Keeping in line with the show's ‘‘Grow’’ theme, the Fashion in the Field section hosts three categories, including Flowers and Fur, Farming through the Ages and Woolly Wearable Art. Association secretary Lorraine Gardner says entrants of the wearable art competition have searched for ideas, inspiration and materials in the region's local op shops, have used recyclable materials or incorporated the byproducts of the outdoors such as leaves, ferns or bark, into their designs. Each category is open to men, women and children of all ages and will be judged accordingly on the day. Another popular contest is the Baby and Me competition. It is alookalike competition for mums and babies with prizes and photos on offer in the two categories, including newborn to 18 months, and 18 months and older. Enter on the day. The contest starts at 11am in the entertainment hub. The popular Terrier Race is on again, as are the Dog Trials. Following the grand parade there will be Bull and Junior Steer Riding competitions.
