Welcome / Croeso
Welcome to your
latest issue of
Rhiwbina Living.
As this is our first
issue of the year, we
should technically
wish you a Happy
New Year but with
Spring already
unfurling before us,
it's probably best
for us to focus on
the warmer months
ahead of us.
This issue is jampacked
with goodies
for you, starting with
a coffee and a catch-up with
former Miss GB, Liz Fuller. After
spending much of her career
travelling the world, Liz now
divides her time between LA
and Cardiff. A former model and
TV host, she is now a Hollywood
talent agent. She speaks about
her love of coming back home to
Rhiwbina.
Vindication Swim is a new
movie with links to the local area
and we were fortunate enough to
speak to the film's director Elliott
Hasler about the inspirational
new motion picture. He speaks
candidly about the challenges
of shooting the movie, plus his
admiration of the film's true-life
central character, Mercedes
Gleitze.
And while we're on the topic
of the big screen, we hear from
Rhiwbina's Sarah-Jane Perez.
Sarah-Jane, a BAFTA-nominated
costume designer, provides us
with a behind-the-scenes look at
what it's like to dress for TV and
film.
Back to Cardiff and Nigel Lewis
returns with another delightful
historical feature, this time taking
a look at Beulah Corner before it
became the village that we know
and love today.
Our city of Cardiff celebrates
its 60th anniversary of its pairing
with Nantes this year and to
commemorate that, we have
two wonderful features about
the long-forged connection.
Our first is from former historian
Maggie Swales and our second
is from David Judd, who began
a lifelong love with France when
he was part of a student swap as
a youngster. Maggie outlines this
historical connection between
our two cities while David
provides his personal memories
of his experiences.
We've teamed up with local
favourites Budd Electrical, to give
you a chance to win a cordless
vacuum cleaner worth £149. And
while we deal with all things
at home, the new recycling
collections have been causing a
bit of a stir these last few months,
so we've put together everything
you need to know about the new
service.
This time of year is the perfect
time to get away from it all and
we've hand-picked 10 places
that you can visit in Spring.
Meanwhile, our local poets have
been busy at work over the
winter months and you can read
their regular contributions on our
Poetry page.
We've also got some great
tips on how to feel better
about life and we also take an
in-depth look at how to beat
procrastination, something that
can hold us back in life. And
if you need a good dollop of
inspiration, read the story about
Anna-Louise Stubbings, who is
transforming organ donation in
Wales.
To sign off, we've got some
wonderfully fresh recipes for this
season ahead and we finish with
a family-based short story.
Make the most of the spring
sunshine and we'll see you in our
next issue!
