Excitement builds for April 8 total solar eclipse
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
On the afternoon of April 8, parts of Ohio, including parts of
Madison County, will experience a total solar eclipse, a rare celestial
event that happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and
Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun, causing the sky to
darken as if it were dawn or dusk.
The last time a total
solar eclipse passed
through Ohio was 1806.
Following this year’s
event, the next total solar
eclipse to pass through
the state won’t happen
until 2099.
The April 8 solar
eclipse will cross North
America, passing over
Mexico, the United
States, and Canada. The
path of totality runs
along a narrow band
stretching from Texas to
Maine. Viewers outside
the path of totality will
still see a partial eclipse.
It is estimated that a
The village of Plain City has set up an
eclipse store where they are selling
commemorative items in association
with the April 8 total solar eclipse.
partial eclipse will start in Ohio around 1:54 p.m., with totality expected
in parts of the state between 3:08 and 3:19 p.m. The timing
and duration of totality will depend on the location. The eclipse will
end in Ohio around 4:26 p.m.
Madison County sits along the outer
southeastern edge of the 124-mile wide path
of totality through the state. According to
NASA’s Eclipse Explorer, an online interactive
map that allows users to access eclipse
information by zip code, the Plain City area
will experience 2 minutes and 13 seconds of
totality, the West Jefferson area will experience
32 seconds of totality, and the London
area will experience 20 seconds of
totality. Mount Sterling sits outside the
path of totality, but will still experience 99.7
percent coverage. By comparison, Kenton in
Hardin County sits in Ohio’s centerline of
totality and will experience 3 minutes and
56 seconds of totality.
Preparing for eclipse travelers
With all that said, Madison
County authorities are preparing for
an influx of visitors to the area looking
to view the eclipse. This could result
in increased traffic and
increased impacts on restaurants,
gas stations, and the like.
“Madison County will probably
see an increase in travelers. Every
county will be different,” said Madison
County Sheriff John Swaney.
Deb Sims, director of the Madison
County Emergency Management
Agency, said her office will staff its
emergency operations center from 12
to 5 p.m. on April 8, just in case incidents
crop up.
“We might have extra traffic with
people who are not necessarily from
here. It could cause congestion and
confusion. Being prepared is a good
idea,” Sims said.
Schools closed
Because the potential for increased
traffic would coincide with
the end of the school day, all schools
in Madison County have opted to
close for the day, holding no classes
for students, citing safety concerns.
This includes Jonathan Alder Local
Schools, London City Schools, Madison-Plains
Local Schools, West Jefferson
Local Schools, Tolles Career &
Technical Center, Shekinah Christian
School, and St. Patrick Catholic
School.
“Despite the district being at the southern edge of totality, the
area is expected to be heavily impacted by solar tourism on this
day,” said London City Schools Superintendent Lou Kramer in announcing
the school closure.
St. Patrick School plans to hold eclipse-related lesson on April 5
and send students home with eclipse viewing glasses that day. West
Jefferson Local Schools has announced they, too, will be send
eclipse viewing glasses home with students on April 5.
Alder presents ‘Into the Woods’ March 14-17
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Nicholas Mayes, director of Jonathan Alder High School’s spring
musical, threw down the gauntlet for his student-actors with this
year’s show selection, “Into the Woods.”
The show weaves together the storylines of several familiar fairytales,
from “Cinderella” and “Little Red Riding Hood” to “Rapunzel”
and “Jack and the Beanstalk.” It includes terrific music, and it
comes with a dark twist.
Cyclist-friendly bed and breakfast opens in London
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
The London Guest House, located at 159
E. Center St. in London, celebrated its
grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony
on March 3.
London resident Alan Knowles, who
owns the business with his wife, Carolynn,
describes the London Guest House as a bed
and breakfast that’s like a mini-hotel.
“We have four hotel-like rooms and a
common area. One of the rooms has a king
bed and is wheelchair accessible. The other
three rooms each have two queen beds,” he
said.
Located 50 feet from the portion of the
cross-state Ohio To Erie Trail that runs
through London, the bed and breakfast
hopes to attract touring cyclists looking for
a comfortable place to stay on their journey.
Alan knows well how rare such accommodations
can be. He took up cycling about 20
years ago and, with his son and friends,
began touring about 15 years ago, spending
days at a time pedaling between towns.
“We’ve found it’s always hard to find a
place to stay along the trail,” he said.
As a long-time volunteer and board member
of the Friends of Madison County Parks
& Trails (FMCPT), Alan has a special connection
to the bike path. FMCPT is a nonprofit
group that helps to maintain,
improve, and promote the local portion of
the trail.
Among the cyclist-friendly amenities at
the London Guest House are a garage with
24-hour guest access for storage of bicycles
and a charger for electric bikes. The property
also will have a charger for guests with
electric vehicles.
Of course, the bed and breakfast is open
to anyone looking for accommodations, not
just cyclists.
“We’re looking forward to meeting all the
people who come through,” Alan said.
Alan is a retired veterinarian. Carolynn
is a retired medical technologist.
County commissioners declare state of emergency
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
In an emergency meeting held on March 1, the Madison County
commissioners declared a state of emergency in the wake of the tornado/storm
event that swept through parts of the county on Feb.
28. The event caused significant damage to homes, buildings, and
property. Major cleanup efforts are under way.
“Declaring a state of emergency allows the county to move immediately
and nimbly to deploy resources and assist our residents
and businesses in need,” the commissioners stated in a press release
issued the afternoon of March 1.
The emergency declaration supports the Madison County Emergency
Management Agency and temporarily allows the county to
make expedited purchases to aid in the emergency response. It’s
also the county’s first step toward applying for potential state and
federal aid for costs incurred in response to the storm.
One of the county’s own properties, the Madison County Airport,
was among the entities hardest hit by the storm. Two of the airport’s
newest hangars, which were about four years old, were completely
destroyed, according to Madison County Administrator Rob
Slane. Several other hangars suffered moderate to significant damage,
as did some of the privately owned planes stored at the airport.
The control tower building stood up to the storm remarkably well,
Slane said, though its communication tower did come down.
“A structural engineer was out (March 1) to start the review
process. We will determine which buildings are safe to enter, which
need to be shored up to have safe entry, and which buildings just
will not be able to be entered due to safety concerns; it’s likely that
those hangars will need to be demolished,” Slane said.
As of March 5, due to safety concerns, the airport was closed to
essentially everyone except approved personnel. During specific
times, tenants have been permitted on the grounds to evaluate
damage, pick up personal items, and potentially move their planes.
“We have a disaster response company out there cleaning up.
They started at about 10 a.m. on (Feb. 28) cleaning up major debris,
anything that could potentially get airborne again and cause additional
damage,” Slane said.
Messenger photo by Pat Donahue
Cleanup at the Madison County Airport started at 10 a.m. Feb. 28, approximately five hours after a tornado
swept through the area. A structural engineer visited the site on March 1 to start the review process and grade
the structures as to how safe they were to enter.
Bond issue on ballot for new school
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
The Madison-Plains Local School District
is on the March 19 primary election ballot,
seeking a bond issue to build a new school
facility for grades pre-kindergarten through
12th grade and career tech. The building
would be located on the district’s current
campus at State Route 38 and Linson Road.
If passed, the 5.4-mill property tax levy
would cost the taxpayer $189 per year per
$100,000 of appraised property value. Taxes
would first be due in 2025.
The total cost of the project is $68.6 million.
The levy would raise $55,360,775 over
a maximum period of 37 years. The remaining
costs would be covered by the Ohio Facilities
Construction Commission ($5.59
million) and local school district funds ($7.6
million). The U.S. Department of Agriculture
(USDA), Office of Rural Development,
Editor’s note: The Madison Messenger sent candidate information
forms to candidates running in contested races in Madison County in
the March 19 primary election. They were invited to submit information
and a photo.
Four candidates are running for the Republican nomination for
county commissioner for the term starting on Jan. 2, 2025. Information
submitted by candidates Cory Coburn, Mark A. Forrest, and Brendan
Shea appeared in the March 3, 2024, edition of the Madison Messenger.
Information for the fourth candidate, Jim King, appears here.
• Jim King
Occupation: Retired
Party Affiliation: Republican
Previous service in public office: Twelve years on West Jefferson
village council. Presently, an elected official in good standing on the
Madison County Republican Central Committee
Education/Military Service: Attended The Ohio State University.
voter’s guide
has offered the district a government interest
rate of 3.625 percent.
The new building would be designed to
have distinct areas and entrances for elementary,
middle school, and high school
grades. It would include classrooms, two
gymnasiums, an auditeria (a combined cafeteria
and auditorium), and up-to-date laboratory,
technical, and security systems.
In addition to construction of the new
building, the project would include site improvements,
furniture, utilities, and equipment,
as well as demolition and abatement
of the intermediate building. Funds also
would be available for demolition and abatement
of the high school, however, district
leaders are looking at the possibility of
keeping some or all of the high school for the
gym and auditorium and for central office
space, storage, and other purposes.
This marks the school district’s third attempt
at a bond issue for a new building for
pre-K through 12th grade.
Should the issue fail in the March 19
election, Superintendent Chad Eisler said
the school board would have to decide what
steps to take next. If the board decided to
pursue a fourth attempt, the USDA’s interest
rate offer would still be available, but
the school district would have to pursue a
new agreement with the Ohio Facilities
Construction Commission for any possible
state funding toward the project.
According to Todd Mustain, district
treasurer, Madison-Plains currently has the
lowest effective tax rate of the four public
schools in Madison County and of the 44
school districts in the seven adjoining counties.
LOWE
Stephanie Klaire Lowe, devoted Jehovah’s Witness, wife,
mother, grandmother, and friend, died on Feb. 25, 2024, in Mount
Carmel East, Columbus, at the age of 87. She was born to Rose
(Bierwerth) on March 14, 1936, in Germany.
Stephanie moved to Ohio where she met the love of her life, Raymond
Lowe. They married in June of 1982 and went on to spend
the next 42 years together. She worked professionally alongside her
husband for Armaly, formerly Brillo, in London. Stephanie spent
much of her time at the London Assembly Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses
where she looked forward to attending
meetings and listening to music.
Aside from spending time at the Kingdom
Hall, she enjoyed shopping and going
out to eat with her family. She especially
loved her sweets and any type of ice cream
they could find.
Stephanie is survived by: her beloved
husband, Raymond Lowe; stepdaughter,
Cindy Jackson; grandchildren, Craig (Kelli)
Jackson and Nicki McKnight; great-grandchildren,
Kaydence Jackson, Easton Jackson,
Nikyiah Jackson, and Kaylin Jackson;
several nieces and nephews; best friends,
Connie and Lloyd Pruitt; and many brothers
and sisters of the worldwide congregation
of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
She was preceded in death by: her parents;
daughter, Darlene Darlington; sistersin-law,
Rosemary Tyler and Carolyn
Hoosier; brothers-in-law, David Goings,
being hosted by Mt. Sterling EyeCare from
2 to 4 p.m. at Mason Park in Mount Sterling.
The business will have eclipse viewing
glasses available and refreshments, including
moon pies and sun chips.
Otherwise, none of Madison County’s
municipal government entities plan to hold
eclipse-related events on April 8. Instead,
town leaders are encouraging residents to
experience the eclipse from their homes.
The village of Plain City has created a
webpage dedicated to the eclipse. A message
on the website states: “We encourage residents
to enjoy the eclipse from the comfort
of their yards. This provides a safe option
for witnessing this remarkable phenomenom
without the need to venture out and
risk being caught in traffic.”
Giveaways, contests, and merchandise
This doesn’t mean local municipalities
aren’t getting into the spirit of the big event.
The village of West Jefferson gave away 300
pairs of eclipse viewing glasses the week of
March 1.
Plain City will do the same, giving away
2,000 eclipse glasses on a first-come firstserved
basis to Plain City residents only
starting at 8 a.m. March 11 at the village
municipal building, 800 Village Blvd. That
same day and time, Plain City households
with children can pick up an eclipse science
box, courtesy of COSI, while supplies last.
Plain City also is holding an eclipse coloring
contest for Plain City residents who
are 10 years old or younger. Submissions
are due by 4 p.m. March 21. A coloring sheet
can be downloaded at www.plaincity.com/eclipse
or picked up at the municipal
building or Plain City Public Library,
305 W. Main St. Winners in each age category
will get an eclipse prize package.
Additionally, Plain City is selling commemorative
merchandise through its online
store, including t-shirts, coins, plush animals,
and stickers, while supplies last. T-
shirt orders must be placed by midnight on
March 13 for delivery prior to the eclipse.
Store proceeds benefit local community organizations.
COSI has supplied the city of London
with 500 science kits focused on the eclipse.
The city plans to distribute the kits to London
City Schools and St. Patrick Catholic
School to distribute to students.
Library programs
Madison County’s libraries have jumped
on the eclipse as an opportunity to present
educational programs.
• Plain City Public Library has four programs
planned related to the eclipse and
space.
On March 12 at 6:30 p.m., Don Stevens
Lilly Chapel Methodist dedicates new expansion
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
For the better part of the past 30 years,
the parishioners at Lilly Chapel Methodist
Church have talked about building an addition
onto their small country church. That
dream has finally become a reality.
On March 3, the congregation held a ribbon-cutting
and dedication ceremony for their
new expansion. The addition is home to a
large kitchen, pastor’s office, secretary’s office,
community room, restrooms, and a shower.
The entire structure is handicap accessible.
“We want to let the community know
that they are welcome. We want to grow,”
said long-time parishioner Connie Ballah
who, with her sister, Judy Green, co-chaired
the building project committee. “We’re a
small church, but we’re a mighty church.
We do a lot of outreach and mission work.
We just want to draw people in.”
The late Mary Andrix was among the
parishioners who really wanted to see the
expansion happen. She encouraged church
leaders to choose a down-to-earth plan for
the expansion that corresponded with the
church’s humble roots and made it doable
sooner rather than later, Ballah said.
“It is lovely. Mary would be so proud of
it,” Ballah said.
Many hands went into making the project
possible, with donations made to the
building fund over the years. One of the special
touches comes thanks to the late Bille
Gatrell, a church member who harvested
ash trees from his property and prepared
the timbers to be used as trim work in the
new addition.
Adoptable pups and cats
The following are among the pets up for
adoption at the Humane Society of Madison
County. Thanks to a generous donor, all
adoption fees are 50 percent off through the
end of March.
Mercury
Mercury has an estimated birthdate of
Oct. 28, 2021 and weighs 52 pounds. He
loves to get all the pets and cuddles, and he
especially loves time in the shelter’s dog
run. Any toy is his favorite, but he especially
likes toys that squeak. He already
knows sit, down, and shake. He is very
treat-motivated and smart, so learning
other commands would be no problem.
Mercury has been introduced to cats and
did well. He has met and played with male
and female dogs and would probably do best
with a dog who matches his energy and desire
to play. Because he is rambunctious, he
would do best in a home with older children.
He does well with car rides and loves going
to the park with shelter volunteers.
Adoption fees for dogs vary: shelter dogs
are $180, prison dogs are $250, puppies are
$300, and popular pure-breeds are $400.
Customers can take 50 percent off these
prices through the end of March. The price
includes: a Home Again microchip, set of
shots, deworming, heartworm testing (if old
enough), spay or neuter, and a one-year rabies
shot (if old enough). All dogs adopted
must leave with a county license at an additional
cost of $17; this fee is cash only. Adoption
fees can be paid by cash or credit card.
Peanut
If you’re looking for a Netflix and chill
buddy, this gorgeous torbie is your perfect
match. Peanut is a calm, laid back girl who
loves to be around people. In fact, she’s the
shelter’s office kitty and spends her days
managing the staff.
She has an estimated birthdate of Feb.
18, 2019. She has spent 20 percent of her
life in the shelter, and the staff doesn’t understand
why she hasn’t been adopted.
Peanut was diagnosed with diabetes
about a year ago, but she is in remission and
does not need insulin. She eats a special diet
Mercury
Peanut
of Proplan Veterinary DM food. The diet
likely will need to continue to keep her
weight and health in check.
Peanut is a huge fan of kitty scratching
posts and cardboard scratchers and has requested
that her forever home have some
for her to enjoy. She has been introduced to
many dogs in the office, and she has done
very well. She spends most days in the company
of a dog or two. But she doesn’t seem
to be a big fan of other kitties. Peanut has
experience with children, as she was around
them in her previous home.
Adoption fees for cats are $100 for kittens
up to 6 months old and $80 for cats 7
months and older. Customers can take 50
percent off these prices through the end of
March. The price includes: a FeLV/FIV test
(if old enough), spay or neuter, a Home
Again microchip, a set of shots, deworming,
and a one-year rabies shot (if old enough).
Fees can be paid by cash or credit card.
Fundraiser
The Humane Society is looking for bakers
2 p.m. March 30 at Tractor Supply Co., 300
Lafayette St., London, and Tractor Supply
Co., 5525 W. Broad St., Columbus. Baked
goods can be dropped off at the shelter between
Celebrating 4-H & FFA
Sign up for 4-H by March 15
4-H empowers youth with the skills they need to lead project and Cloverbud programs. Visit
for a lifetime. 4-H inspires curiosity, builds lifelong
skills, fuels adventure, and grows leaders through fun,
hands-on activities that include clubs, projects, service,
and camps. Kids can be a 4-H project member starting
when they are 8 years old and in the third grade, and
they can participate in competitive events like projects
and judging at the Madison County. 4-H project members
select from over 200 projects based on their interest.
Younger children age 5 and in kindergarten are
Cloverbuds who enjoy group-centered, non-competitive
activities until they are eligible to be a project member.
All 4-H members engage in hands-on learning in clubs,
camps, and other settings with approved adult volunteers.
4-H volunteers are critical to the success of the 4-H program
and go through a thorough selection process.
Madison County has over 25 clubs spread throughout
the county, and each is a little different. Some clubs specialize
in livestock projects, some focus more on family
consumer science projects, and several offer any type of
for a list of clubs, contact information,
and more.
4-H membership is based on a child’s age and grade
as of Jan. 1 of the current calendar year. Membership
requires enrollment in an authorized 4-H club or group
under the direction of an OSU Extension professional
or an approved adult volunteer. A youth’s 4-H eligibility
ends Dec. 31 the year he or she turns 19.
Madison County’s deadline to join 4-H is March 15
to be eligible to participate in the Madison County Junior
Fair. Find more information on joining at
www.go.osu.edu/joinmadco4h. The membership fee is
$15 per year.
Good Luck to All
4-H & FFA Participants!
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Madison County resident Daphne Hedgecock has dedicated
a large portion of her life to 4-H, from her years as
a 4-Her to what is now her 36th year as a 4-H volunteer.
For that dedication, Hedgecock is receiving a state
Meritorious Service Award at the Ohio 4-H Conference
on March 9 at the Columbus Convention Center. Madison
County Extension representatives nominated her
for the recognition. Local 4-H youths and parents submitted
letters of support.
Hedgecock started her 4-H journey when she was 10
or 11 years old and living in Franklin County. After she
aged out of 4-H, she helped her mother, Roseanne
Harbage, run the Grove City Snappy Stitchers. In 1999,
she moved to the family farm in Madison County and,
with her mother, assisted Doris Roby with the Clover
Clippers 4-H Club in the Plain City area. She continues
to serve as an advisor for the Clover Clippers.
Over the years, Hedgecock has taken on roles that
serve broader audiences, spending time as a county and
state 4-H judge for projects in the family and consumer
science area, such as clothing, nutrition, and interior design.
She is a master clothing educator, serving as a
state-level volunteer for the past 27 years.
With the help of others, she puts on multiple 4-H
clothing and sewing clinics throughout the course of the
year. Taking place in Madison County, the clinics have
come to attract not only local youths but also youths
from Franklin, Fayette, and Union counties.
“We don’t care who we help, just as long as we’re
helping kids,” Hedgecock said. “You don’t have to know
how to sew to take a sewing or clothing project. Come to
our clinics, and we’ll help all skill levels.”
Hedgecock rallies parents to help provide meals, other
master clothing educators to lead lessons, and the community
as a whole to donate supplies and lend sewing
machines for the clinics, some of which take place over a
day and some of which take place over a week.
On April 27, Hedgecock will put her organizational
and educational skills to the test with a new statewide
Daphne Hedgecock (right) offers guidance to
for her more than three decades as a 4-H volunteer.
event, “Sew Ohio,” at the 4-H Center in Columbus. The
event will offer beginner, intermediate, and advanced
clothing and quilting classes, along with a class for parents
to assist them in helping their children with projects.
Lunch, a fashion show, guest speakers, and goodie
bags are planned. Some lucky participants also will go
home with sewing machines.
“We’re hoping for 100 participants,” said Hedgecock,
who has been tapped as chair of the event.
As for why she pours so much time and energy into
working with 4-Hers and other youngsters, Hedgecock
said, “I love working with the kids, and I love seeing
where the kids are going.
“I have one young lady who is a designer for a major
company in New York. I have another 4-Her who is in
design school now at Kent State. I have girls who come
back and tell me what they’re up to. It’s the life-long
friends that you make.”
Hedgecock is a family and consumer science teacher
at Central Crossing High School in South-Western City
Schools. She is retiring at the end of this school year.
Enthusiastic about everything 4-H has to offer
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Adelyn Rupejko can’t say enough good things about 4-H.
Now in her fourth year in the program, the London Middle
School sixth-grader has participated in a variety of projects and
taken on multiple leadership roles. She’s had a lot of fun along the
way and learned valuable life lessons—all things she thinks other
youths should experience, too.
“I have conversations about 4-H with my friends all the time. It
shocks me how many people don’t know what it is. I usually tell
them how amazing it is, what I do, and how they can get into it,”
she said.
Adelyn grew up watching her cousins show goats. When she was
old enough to show, her mother signed her up and started a 4-H
club, the Madison County Show-Offs. Adelyn’s younger sister,
Austyn, also shows goats.
“I like being able to be with all of my family when we go to goat
shows. We always play music in the car and joke around. It makes
us closer,” Adelyn said.
Next to goats, cake decorating is Adelyn’s
second biggest love. She’s done both all four
years of her 4-H career.
“I love cake decorating because I get to be
creative. It’s really fun playing with all the
frosting and figuring out new things,” she
said.
Adelyn also has added poultry to her
repertoire. Last year, she took 50 birds to
the Madison County Fair. This year, she’s
taking a lot fewer but with just as much enthusiasm.
“It’s something different and more
knowledge-based. I have lots of breeds. The
showmanship chicken I’ve been using for a
while is a bantam cochin. Her name is ‘Little
Red Riding Hood.’ I love the way they
look. I also love how small they are. I like
the smaller birds a lot.”
This year, Adelyn hopes to do a cooking
project, along with her cake decorating project.
She enjoys cooking because it’s something
she gets to do with her stepmother,
she said.
When it comes to leadership roles in 4-H,
Adelyn serves as president of her club. Additionally,
she was named the goat ambassador
at last year’s Madison County Fair. As
part of her duties, she passed out awards at
shows, competed on the royalty team at the
Ag Olympics, and attended other fair
events.
For the past four years, Adelyn Rupejko has take cake decorating
“I really liked it because I really love representing
the goat community because it’s it comes to decorating cookies, too.
projects to the Madison County Fair. Those skills work well when
my favorite thing ever,” she said.
Adelyn said she has picked up many trolling and wanted to take over. 4-H has really helped me with
skills through 4-H that have transferred to that. Being in club, it’s been good hearing everyone else’s ideas.
other parts of her life.
Also, sometimes it’s fun to know random facts that nobody else
“It helps me at school,” she said. “Whenever
we do projects, I’m better at teamwork Adelyn said she has loved 4-H from the start.
“I fell like there’s a lot you can learn from it,” she said.
Consider 4-H summer camp
Madison County’s summer 4-H Camp
will take place June 7-11 at 4-H Camp
Clifton in Yellow Springs. Campers will saddle
up to explore life in the Wild West with
the 2024 theme of “Boots and Barrels.”
Camp offers a wide variety of fun and educational
activities. Campers participate in
daily workshops and activities including nature,
sports, science, dancing, cooking, high
ropes, rock climbing, zip line, canoeing,
archery, shooting sports, creeking, hiking,
arts and crafts, and more. Rodeo games,
leather tool crafting, and cowboy cooking
are some of this year’s special activities.
4-H Camp Clifton is located next to John
Bryan State Park, 12 miles south of Springfield
in Greene County. It is just off of
Clifton Road near the Clifton Mill.
Campers live in rustic cabins with 10 to
12 campers and trained counselors. A central
dining hall provide campers with nutritious meals. A large,
open-air lodge and a large swimming pool provide recreational activities.
Other facilities include the nature center, craft hall, canteen,
high ropes, team challenge course, campfire circle, and sports
fields.
Registration starts April 1 and is open to 4-H and non-4-H
youths who are 8 to 13 years old. The earlybird cost is $260 for 4-H
members and $310 for non 4-H members. After May 20, the price
goes to $280 for 4-Hers and $330 for non-4-Hers. After May 9, spots
will open up to Logan County 4-Hers, as well.
Scholarships and fundraising is available to families to help offset
some of the cost of camp. The 4-H Advisory Committee and the
London Kiwanis Club sponsors $50 scholarships. Forms are available
by calling the Extension office at (740) 852-0975. They also are
available to download at madison.osu.edu. Scholarship forms must
Celebrating 4-H & FFA
Ag power diagnostics team competes at district
By Halley Ballah
London FFA reporter
A team of talented students from London
High School FFA comprising Evan Moran,
Wyatt Spangler, Justin Salyers, and
Kadeyn Ellars, showcased their mechanical
prowess and problem-solving skills at the
recent District 6 FFA Agricultural Power
Diagnostics Career Development Event
(CDE). Held at Farmers Equipment in Ur-
bana, the event saw the participation of several
schools, where London placed sixth and 12th.
This CDE presented the team with seven stations,
each featuring five tractors and two skid steers, all
with various mechanical issues. From electrical malfunctions
such as faulty relays and switches to emission
problems, hydraulic adjustments, and clogged air
filters, the students had their work cut out for them.
The London FFA team tackled each station methodically,
diagnosing and addressing two issues per
piece of equipment. Using both their know-how and
technological proficiency, they navigated through the
stations, demonstrating their ability to think on their
feet and adapt to diverse scenarios.
London FFA extends its gratitude to Farmers
Equipment in Urbana and their staff for hosting the
event. Their support and commitment to nurturing
young talent in the field of agriculture are greatly appreciated.
HELPing out
By Ellen Moore
London FFA secretary
In an inspiring act of community service,
a group from the London High School
FFA chapter stepped up to the plate on
Feb. 5 to dish out 120 meals to those in
need at H.E.L.P. House. Led by students
enrolled in the food science class, this initiative
showcased the power of youthful
energy and compassion in tackling local
challenges.
Crafting a menu designed to warm
both the body and the soul, the students
put their culinary skills to the test. The
meal consisted of shredded roast beef
sandwiches, creamy macaroni and
cheese, corn, and homemade brownies.
Every element of the meal was prepared
with the nutrition and safety of H.E.L.P.
House customers in mind. London FFA
thanks Snyder Livestock, Snyder Farm,
and Da-Suz Farm for the donation of beef
for this project.
After school hours, the FFA chapter
members came together to package the
meals, turning their classroom into a
bustling assembly line of generosity. The
meals were distributed to community
members through the Monday Meal program
at H.E.L.P. House. Through handson
participation, FFA members gained
insights into the challenges faced by their
community and the power of collective action
to bring about positive change.
Celebrating 4-H & FFA
Madison-Plains FFA maintains a busy schedule
By Addison Reeves
Madison-Plains FFA reporter
Our Madison-Plains High School FFA officers have been busy at
work with maintaining the chapter. This year, they introduced an
elementary ag day, Donor Breakfast, and Ag Olympics to the chapter
fun. They’ve also continued traditions throughout the year, such
as the Fall Harvest Festival, a trip to the State FFA Convention,
the annual banquet, and more. Our FFA officers work hard at
everything they do to ensure the success of our chapter.
Our yearly banquet is something we prepare for all year round.
During the banquet, many families come to support their youth as
they receive awards for their hard work throughout the year. This
banquet is a way to show our support to all our members and everyone
who has helped our FFA in any way.
This year will be the fourth time we have held our Fall Harvest
Festival. It takes place in September. It includes a corn hole tournament,
pie eating contest, hayride, movie, and food trucks. This
event is open to the community and is so much fun.
In addition to the state convention, the chapter goes on many
other trips, including the national convention, judging contests, and
leadership nights and conferences. Going on all of these trips, our
members are able to experience new things and make a ton of memories.
Honoring Black History
As we celebrate Black History Month, let us not only reflect
on the past but also commit ourselves to building
a brighter future. As your State Senator, I am honored
to stand in solidarity with you during Black History
Month, a time dedicated to commemorating the resilience,
achievements, and cultural richness of the
Black community. This month serves as a poignant reminder
of the struggles and triumphs that have shaped
our nation. From the courageous leaders of the Civil
Rights Movement to the trailblazing innovators who
have revolutionized every facet of society, Black Americans
have left an indelible mark on our collective consciousness.
Their unwavering determination in the face
of adversity and their relentless pursuit of justice continue
to inspire us all.
However, Black History Month is not merely a time for
reflection; it is a call to action. At the community level,
there are countless ways to honor Black History Month
and contribute to its celebration. Here are a few suggestions:
Support Black-Owned Businesses.
Patronize Black-owned businesses in your community
and amplify their voices through social media and
word-of-mouth recommendations. By investing in the
economic success of Black entrepreneurs, we can promote
economic empowerment and foster a more equitable
society.
Attend public hearings and meetings where issues
affecting black communities are discussed.
These hearings provide an opportunity for community
members to voice their concerns, share their experiences,
and advocate for change directly to lawmakers
and policymakers. By showing up and speaking out,
you can ensure all voices and perspectives are heard
and considered in the decision-making process.
Engage directly with your elected officials.
Writing letters, making phone calls, and scheduling
meetings with local government officials and state legislators
are all powerful tools for advocacy. Building relationships
with your elected officials and holding us
accountable can help drive positive change from the
ground up.
Get involved with local organizations and advocacy
groups actively working to address issues facing
black communities.
These groups often have deep connections and relationships
with state government officials and can provide
valuable insights and support for your advocacy
efforts. By collaborating with problem solvers who are
dedicated to advancing black communities, you can
amplify your impact and contribute to meaningful
change in your community and beyond.
Together, let us strive to create a society where every
individual is valued, respected, and empowered to live
up to their fullest God-given potential. By honoring the
legacy of Black Americans, we can forge a more just and
unified future for generations to come.
Madison County’s new Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program welcomed their first crop of volunteers in a swearing-in
ceremony held on Feb. 29: (from left) volunteers Austin Hill, Michele Bouquet, Carolyn Anderson, Sandi O’Connor, Elizabeth Parker,
and Patricia Blazer; Brianna Britton, CASA program director; and Madison County Juvenile/Probate Judge Christopher J. Brown.
CASA: Being a voice for children
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
On Feb. 29, six individuals with a passion
for helping children officially became
court appointed special advocates (CASA).
Madison County Juvenile/Probate Judge
Christopher J. Brown administered the oath
of office.
“This is a wonderful endeavor each of you
is going to undertake, and it is much needed
in Madison County,” Brown said.
CASA volunteers advocate for children
who are in the court system as a result of
abuse, neglect, or dependency. Their job is
to listen to the child, find out what their
wishes are moving forward, and present the
child’s best interests to the court. The ultimate
goal is to reunify the children with
their families by linking them to appropriate
resources.
Each volunteer completes 33 hours of
training over the course of six weeks. The
training includes in-person and online instruction,
as well as court observation. Once
training is complete, volunteers can begin
accepting cases.
The first appointees in Madison County’s
new CASA program are: Carolyn Anderson
of Mechanicsburg, Patricia Blazer of London,
Michele Bouquet of London, Austin
