At the end of the day, warm down for around 30
minutes, but be careful not to overdo it or push
yourself too far. Think of the last 30 minutes of the
day as a wind-down, it is so important to give time
when you are off the slopes to cool down and work
through a stretch routine, particularly for your legs.
You’ll feel so much better the next day and reduce the
risk of injury throughout the week.
TEACHING CHILDREN TO SKI
There are huge benefits to teaching children to
ski, one of which is the sheer volume of fun and
excitement then show back to you as a coach them.
One of the obvious benefits is their lack of fear and
the fact they seem to bounce back up when they fall
over!
The earlier they start, around 3 years old, the better.
The body and mind are like a massive sponge at a
child’s age and they will develop so much faster.
It’s a great family bonding experience and a real get
away from day-to-day life. The mountains are such a
special place and with the fun of other activities like
building snowmen, snowball fights and sledging, it’s
a perfect experience.
When teaching children, my advice is to provide
extra time to make sure they are comfortable and
their kit fits them well. The ski helmet needs to feel
comfortable and ski goggles should be adjusted so
they feel good on the face.
Children need to be protected even more so than
adults from the elements, so good quality sun cream
and ski kit from technical and trusted brands - I opt
for Helly Hansen myself. Sometimes, a useful tool
can be used to clip on the front a child’s skis to help
them with Snowplough - a popular option is the
Edgie Wedgie Original. This speeds up the process
of teaching children to practice the pizza shape with
their skis, as well as snowplough turning.
My advice is to make it fun! It’s important to respond
to children’s emotional states and not just push them
to constantly improve - let them learn at their own
pace.
