expert advice How To Choose the Perfect Scent For Spring As the season changes and temperature warms, ARRAN Sense of Scotland’s Head of Fragrance, Robin Fisher explains how to choose your perfect Spring scent and the ins and outs of <strong>2024</strong>’s fragrance trend – scent layering ROBIN FISHER PICKING YOUR FRAGRANCE STRENGTH It’s easy to be unsure of the differences between an Eau de Parfum (EDP) and Eau de Toilette (EDT), one thing to remember is both products will have the same scent notes, the difference lies in the concentration. EDP is the stronger of the two, with a higher percentage of perfume oil, around 12-18%, creating an intensified, longlasting scent that continues to delight for around 4-5 hours, great for evening wear. EDPs are a little more expensive because of the higher levels of perfume oil but the intensity and longevity make them a great choice. For a delicate scent that offers a lighter feel, the EDT is a pleasure. Featuring a slightly lower perfume oil percentage, around 8-12%, it creates a luxurious everyday scent, without being too overbearing. FRAGRANCE LAYERING Fragrance layering is one of the hottest trends for <strong>2024</strong>, seeing shoppers build a scent with a variety of different products. If choosing a layered approach, this can increase the longevity of an individual scent by linking products with the same scent. Why not focus this scent across your entire routine with bath and shower products to start, locking in moisture with the matching body lotion and finishing with a spritz of perfume. Perfect if you love a particular scent and want to enhance the overall fragrance experience. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NOTES To fully take advantage of fragrance layering, it’s important to pay attention to the notes. Top notes are the initial scent so should remain soft and delicate and help to shape the fragrance’s story. Light top notes are ideal, and scents of jasmine and grapefruit work beautifully. Sitting at the fragrance centre are the heart notes, which last around 20 to 60 minutes and makes up 70% of the full fragrance scent. Rose, lily and orange blossom are perfect options for heart notes as they work to prolong the top notes while introducing new scents to enhance the overall experience. Base notes form the foundation of the fragrance and tend to be rich and long-lasting aromas such as musk, vanilla or sandalwood. Base notes sink into the skin and last up to a few hours. CHOOSING YOUR FRAGRANCE With so many options on the market, it can be overwhelming to pick out a new scent however, we often see people gravitate towards two different scent categories: sweet and fruity fragrances which are ideal for everyday wear or floral and fresh fragrances with delicately balanced layers of scent that refresh.
