Hamilton Township High School sent two
wrestlers to the OHSAA State Wrestling
Tournament, held March 8-10 at Ohio
State’s Schottenstein Center. Audrina
Pack (left), a junior, entered the tournament
with a record of 31-6 in the 235
pound class. She pinned Le Naysia
Dickson of Lyndhurst Brush in 34 seconds.
Pack lost to eventual champion,
Brooke Jenkins of Vermillion, but she
came back to pin her next two opponents.
Pack lost her semi-final match before
wrapping up on a high note, pinning junior
Alexas Cowan of West Union to finish
in the fifth place spot. Sienna Sanborn
(right), a senior, returned to tournament
for the fourth the time and competed in
the 130 pound class. She pinned Liberty
Johnson of Batavia Clermont
Northeastern and defeated Kai Gaetjens
of Mogadore. She lost her next two
matches before winning her final match
over Emily Flynn of Hubbard. The final
win made Sanborn a three time state
placer, taking fifth all three years. She finished
the season with a record of 45-4.
Sanborn passed the 100 career win milestone
this season and signed to wrestle
next season at Tiffin University.
Legal hurdle hurts sports group in CW
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
Unforeseen legal issues could impact a local
sports organization and Canal Winchester Joint
Recreation District programming after operating
under an agreement with Canal Winchester
Schools.
Canal Winchester Board of Education member
Adam Twiss said during the board’s March
11 meeting he believes the biggest sticking point
in recent discussions with the CWJRD was the
Tomahawks football program.
“They agreed to a one-year deal, the same deal
they had last year, but the problem is there are
no Port-a-Potties, no trash cans, and I believe the
fields were not lined,” said Twiss. “That was the
sticking point at that meeting. I was there at the
meeting and they decided everything was going
to come back through the CWJRD for the new
season. Being the transition season this year,
that would help transition into a new beginning,
if you want to call it that.”
A letter was sent out to participants describing
the situation. However, the district later discovered
the CWJRD could not legally sublease
facilities to the Tomahawks program.
“Previously, the CWJRD and Tomahawks had
an agreement in leasing out the school and we
can no longer do that,” said board member
Vangela Barnes.
Canal Winchester Schools Superintendent
Kiya Hunt said the district was informed they
“A name you know, Experience you can trust”
are unable to have facilities subleased, which is
the situation with the district and their lease
with the CWJRD, which subleases facilities to
the Tomahawks.
“In this situation, we were told we could not
have the CWJRD sublease our facilities,” Hunt
said.
According to Barnes, the legal position is concerning,
but she wanted to make sure that, as a
school board, they are not against having a recreation
league, but were forced to make changes to
be compliant legally.
Eric McGhee, one of the founders of the sixyear-old
Tomahawk football program said, “It
Efforts to save historic school
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
A little brick building at the corner of U.S.
Route 23 and Rathmell Road once served
students of Hamilton Local Schools as far
back as the late 19th century and area resident
Walley Obert is hoping to continue that
tradition.
Now abandoned and boarded up as construction
continues on a nearby Google complex,
the little schoolhouse built in 1880
could get a second life.
School doors closed to students in 1926
and the building was sold at public auction
in 1930. It is currently owned by the
Hartman Foundation and was one of many
Hartman Farms row homes.
Obert started an effort to move the brick
one-story structure well before COVID
struck and never abandoned his dream of
keeping the structure safe from the wrecking
ball in the name of progress.
“This building was intended to be used to
teach students,” said Obert, “and it can be
again.”
A proposed new home for what became known as
the Hartman School is on grounds bordering the
Hamilton Elementary School just up the road off of
Parsons Avenue. Obert said organizers plan to create a
non-profit group in order to fund the project.
“I never stopped talking about it and I’m hoping to
get it accomplished within three years,” said Obert,
who is a Hamilton Board of Education member, but
spearheading the project as a private, passionate citizen.
“I’d like to see our history brought to our campus.
It’s personally important to me to keep this history.
There are some things we have to do and other things
we don’t have to do because it’s an historical building.”
While public school funding cannot be used in support
of the project, Hamilton Schools Superintendent
Mark Tyler said the district can provide the land to
rebuild the Hartman school.
Hamilton Township trustee news
At the Feb. 14 Hamilton Township trustee meeting:
•A citizen asked if the current EMT education program
at Hamilton Township High School could possibly
be used to create a pool of these EMT-Basic’s to
Rosenbergerstated that he and the assistant fire chief
have been discussing a safety service class with
Hamilton Township Schools that could potentially
turn out both law enforcement and fire candidates.
•Trustee Chairman Chris Hann was recently contacted
by the village of Lockbourne leadership about
using the township community center as a place of
seems something that was going really well for the
community has been thrown a curve ball and there’s
no answers. Money, field space, and kids are the number
one thing that’s been wildly overlooked in this. I
think as a group, as a whole as the Tomahawks, we
haven’t been given any answers and we’re trying to
find out why these changes.”
McGhee said Tomahawks football teams are comprised
of Canal Winchester kids, but added it feels like
they’re being priced out and, as an organization, won’t
be able to run football in the community.
The Hartman School, a historic school building in the Hamilton
Local School District.
“This is an opportunity for the community to preserve
a part of its history,” said Tyler.
Obert said volunteers are talking with a Zanesville
contractor to see if the structure can be moved as it
now stands, east up Rathmell Road to Parsons Avenue
southbound and then east to the school campus.
While changes were made when the schoolhouse
was turned into a private residence, Obert said original
wood window frames are still intact, as well as an
original plaster chalkboard.
“When we were in there, I pulled off some peeling
wallpaper and the chalkboard was underneath,” said
Obert. “It still has a wood ceiling and was a very well
structured building with a cedar shingled roof that was
later slated over. We’re just in the preliminary phase
of the project and should know within two to three
weeks what the cost should be. We’ll need volunteers
to help and if it can be done, we’re going to need to
have local fundraisers.”
shelter in their disaster plan. Hann stated the community
center has a generator, several cots, and limited
supplies for use. Residents have showers available at
the fire department if needed. Trustee phone numbers
have been provided to Lockbourne so they can contact
an elected official if they need to use the facility.
Hamilton approves police contract
On Feb. 14, the Hamilton Township trustees
approved the 2024 police services contract with the
Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. The contract is for
$1.06 million with an increase of $21,336 or $1,778 per
month. The term of the contract is Jan. 1, 2024
through Dec. 31, 2024.
“That kind of handcuffs us and puts us in a bad
position in the community,” said McGhee. “I’m just
looking for answers right now and I don’t feel like
we’ve been given the proper channels.”
Board President Monica Talley said the board will
take his concerns under advisement.
According to the Central Ohio Youth Athletic
Association website, the Canal Winchester
Tomahawks offer baseball for youths in grades three
through six and football and cheerleading for kindergarten
through grade six.

Appreciating the art of everything
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
The bright lights and busy environment
of a movie set are beckoning Addison
Parker.
With family roots still planted firmly in
Canal Winchester, Parker–a 2020 Canal
Winchester High School graduate and senior
at the University of Alabama–is pursuing
a career in filmmaking and recently
served as an assistant director for the university’s
first student feature film.
“My role was the point of communication
for cast and crew when it came to
scheduling and on-set production,” said
Parker. “In essence, my job required me to
take the 100 plus page script, break it up
into filmable chunks (typically based on
the location needs), and then to schedule
the days and times we would actually be
able to film those things. While the job is
never easy, since this was a student film, I
had the added challenge of scheduling the
entire production around the class schedule
of the crew and cast members as well. I
began work on this project in early
December and as of now, we have officially
wrapped production.”
The movie is a coming of age story
involving a 19-year-old girl named Evelyn
who, in order to come to terms with her
present life, must face her past and reunite
with her mom who left her 10 years ago.
Parker is in the process of directing two
short films, all in her final semester of college.
She graduates in May with a degree
in creative media and became involved in
directing after taking a course in
scriptwriting.
“The two films I’m getting ready to
direct are scripts I have workshopped for
about a year now,” said Parker. “One of
them in particular started out as a small,
two-scene sample I wrote in a screenwriting
class a year and a half ago. It was for a
horror/suspense writing assignment and I
had chosen to write in the style of a psychological
thriller because my mom and I were
obsessed with thrillers and would watch
them together.”
The second short film Parker is directing
is a more traditional narrative following
a woman who is unhappy with her life
and decides that a life-changing hike is the
answer to all of her problems.
When writing, Parker said she has a
strong, clear vision for the story she is
telling and is able to visually describe what
the final edit should look like simply from
words on a page.
“That’s when I signed up for my first
directing class and made ‘The
Understudies’ (2023),” said Parker. “It was
a script I had first written in screenwriting,
and with my connection to the theatre
department at UA, I knew I was able to get
resources I would need to tell this comedic
story about the dramatic environment of
high school theatre. Once I stepped onto
the set of ‘The Understudies,’ I knew. One
of my professors at the time had been there
observing and she pulled me aside very
“Once I stepped onto the set of
‘The Understudies,’ I knew. One of
my professors at the time had been
there observing and she pulled me
aside very quickly and said, ‘This is
what you need to be doing. Do this
as much as you can.’”
- Addison Parker
quickly and said, ‘This is what you need to
be doing. Do this as much as you can.’”
In switching from feature length to the
short film format, one of the biggest differences
Parker’s discovered is with short
films, directors often choose to take on the
duties of an assistant director.
“Since you have less to film, typically
the director has more space to handle the
communications and scheduling,” Parker
said. “With a feature film, the director is
usually so concerned with continuity, getting
the correct emotional performance out
of their actors, and overseeing the producer's
work that having an assistant director
is no longer an added bonus, but a necessity.
It’s much easier to complete a short film
in a small window of time with a smaller
crew, but a feature film would be impossible
without the active assistance of an
involved team.”
Parker thinks people might be surprised
at the amount of behind-the-scenes work it
takes to create a short film. She said viewers
typically don’t think about the months
of preparation, including script rewrites,
location booking, production scheduling,
the best order shooting scenes based on the
sun’s position in relation to location, set
dressing, costumes and more.
“People even forget that, as a director,
you have to provide full meals on set to all
of your cast and crew members any time
you have them working longer than five
hours,” said Parker. “Working on my own
films has absolutely changed the way in
which I consume cinema. I’m much more
impressed with large Hollywood films and
appreciate the effort that goes into creating
a beautiful and realistic set, but I’m also
much more aware of continuity errors in
films.”
With the keen eye of a director, Parker
said she can always spot when a character's
drink magically changes, how much it
is filled from one shot to another, or when
the plot has unexplained holes in it. She
also notices when shots are slightly out of
focus.
“In some ways, it can drive you crazy to
analyze films in this way, but it also amplifies
the appreciation I have for a beautifully
lit scene or the way in which the editor
chose to splice together an interaction,”
said Parker. “In films, most of the time the
goal is for lighting and editing to be so
seamless, the audience doesn’t pay any
attention to it, but as a filmmaker, we
learn to analyze and appreciate the art of
everything.”
First “super load” passes through
My
Legislative
Aide
The Legislature currently is on recess and will return
just after Easter. I have asked my Legislative Aide,
Teddy Smith, to introduce himself in this issue’s column
and let us know what his responsibilities are.
I am Teddy Smaith, the Legislative Aide for Representative
Dave Dobos. Although I now work for the
State of Ohio, I was born in downtown Chicago, Illinois
in 2001. I spent the first 18 years of my life in
the city and suburbs of Chicago, before deciding to
attend The Ohio State University, where I earned a
bachelor’s degree in political science with a focus
on American Politics. While at OSU, I fell in love with
the city of Columbus and knew I wanted to spend
the beginning of my post-grad career here. So, I applied
to be a Legislative Aide in the Ohio House of
Representatives. After interviewing with a few Representatives,
I was offered the position by Representative
Dobos and accepted without a second
thought.
I’ve now been working for Rep. Dobos and the
House since October 2023, and the position has
provided me with great experience in my field. My
responsibilities focus on helping the Representative
serve his constituents as best he can. Many are clerical
duties, such as following up on constituent requests,
setting up and preparing him for meetings,
communicating event invitations, and keeping track
of his schedule. I also assist him with the legislative
process. For example, when working on a new
piece of legislation, I am typically the main point of
contact for any organizations or constituents who
may be advising the Representative on the bill. I
also keep track of any changes the bill may need before
it can be sent to the Clerk’s office and placed in
a committee. In addition to legislative duties, Representative
Dobos’ position as Vice Chair of the
House Transportation Committee means I hold the
title of Vice Clerk. As Vice Clerk, I am responsible for
taking the minutes at every Transportation Committee
meeting, keeping a record of every bill and testimony
that passes through the committee, and
helping the Clerk (the legislative aide of the committee
chair) with any committee-related issues that
may arise. Being the Legislative Aide for Rep. Dobos
has been a rewarding challenge for me, and I could
not have asked for a more fulfilling opportunity so
quickly after graduating. If you ever have any questions,
insights, or concerns as a constituent of Rep.
Dobos, please don’t hesitate to e-mail the Representative
or me at rep10@ohiohouse.gov.
(Dave Dobos represents the 10th District in the Ohio
House of Representatives, which consists of parts of
West, Southwest, and South Columbus, Grove City, Urbancrest,
and portions of Franklin and Jackson Townships.
He reports regularly on his activities in this
position and his campaign has paid for this communication
with you.)
The first shipment of the giant things
passed through southeastern Franklin
County from March 8-10.
“This first super load was one of the
smaller ones that will pass through the area
this year,” said Groveport Police Chief Casey
Adams. “This one was on its way to a project
in Hebron, which is not related to the Intel
project in Licking County.”
Adams said this first shipment rolled
through the area from Rickenbacker Airport
to Old Bixby Road in less than two hours.
“There were no big problems,” said
Adams. “One stop sign had to be moved and
the truck and the load went slightly over a
curb at Opus Drive and Green Pointe Drive
South.”
According to the Ohio Department of
Transportation, these super loads will pass
through the area several times this year. They arrive in
Manchester, Ohio, via barge and each load will move onto
a semi-truck and be transported via a predetermined route
to either New Albany or Hebron. Most of the loads are
associated with Intel’s semiconductor campus in Licking
County. The other destination is Freepoint EcoSystems’
advanced recycling facility just north of Hebron. The loads
will not contain any hazardous material.
ODOT officials said some of the loads will could weigh
up to 900,000 pounds, be 19 feet wide, 24 feet high, and 270
feet long. Each oversized and overweight load will take
approximately 8-15 days to reach its destination from
Manchester. While no long-term closures or detours are
planned, slow-rolling roadblocks will be necessary during
transit, and drivers should plan ahead for long delays
along the route.
In Groveport, these shipments may require southbound
traffic to be diverted for portions of State Route 317 during
which some super load trucks will travel northbound in the
southbound lanes between Groveport Road and Bixby
Road to ensure clearance of utility lines and traffic signals.
Each super load truck is escorted by several Ohio State Highway
Patrol troopers, vehicles from ODOT, and vehicles from the heavy
hauler companies. Crews will move power lines and traffic signals
out of the way and resolve other needs that arise.
According to city of Groveport officials, the city is collaborating
with ODOT, Madison Township Police and Fire Departments, and
other first responder partners to ensure emergency vehicles can
get around the super load trucks. Large electronic message boards
are placed at key locations along the expected travel route in
advance of each shipment to inform motorists of the impending
obstacle to their commute.
Visit www.OHGO.com or download the OHGO mobile app to
review real-time traffic updates. For information visit www.transportation.ohio.gov.
The route
Here is the expected route for the super loads in Pickaway,
Franklin, and Licking counties:
•Travel north on U.S. 23 to Chillicothe.
•Take U.S. 35 west to State Route 104 north.
•Take 104 north to State Route 762 near Commercial Point.
•Travel east on State Route 762 to Rickenbacker Parkway.
•Travel north on Rickenbacker Parkway North to Alum Creek Drive.
•Travel north on Alum Creek Drive to Rohr Road.
This song is either brilliant or an
incredibly annoying sound to bounce off
one’s ear drums.
It’s “Surfin’ Bird” by The Trashmen,
which made it into Billboard’s top 10 in
1963 and is known for the repetitive line
“the bird is the word.”
Though the song arose during the surf
music craze of the early 1960s, I am throwing
this out there for your consideration: I
think it might be the first punk rock
record, pre-dating the raucous punk rock
music era of the late 1970s by more than a
decade.
Arguments can be made that Link
Wray, with his distorted guitar sounds, or
Dick Dale, with his use of volume and
reverb, could claim this mantle of the earliest
punk rock record, or maybe even
Little Richard with his energetic, frenzied
sound. But the music created by these and
others like them is still more polished than
the crazy cacophony of “Surfin’ Bird.”
From a bit of research, I’ve found that
the song is a mash up - by the garage band
The Trashmen, who hailed from Minnesota
- of two rhythm and blues songs written by
The Rivingtons.
Why do I think The Trashmen’s “Surfin’
Bird” is the first punk rock record? Well, it
shares many of punk rock’s characteristics.
It’s loud. It’s short. It’s aggressive. It’s simple.
It has attitude. It means nothing and
everything at the same time. It’s a bit
angry. It’s fun.
Hamilton Township
trustees support project
At the Feb. 14 Hamilton Township
trustee meeting, the trustees approved
sending a letter of support for the Alum
Creek Drive widening project to the
Franklin County Engineer. Trustee
Chairman Chris Hann said the township is
not contributing any money to the project
as the trustees feel that the jurisdictions
Editor’s Notebook
The lyrics are
repetitive to the point
that they get stuck in
your brain. By lyrics,
I mean, well, there
are some words being
sung, but there are
also odd vocal noises
that just seem to fit.
Musically the guitar
and bass churn
and burn the chords
into your being and
the drummer powerfully
propels the song.
Even the band’s
Rick
Palsgrove
name is punk - The Trashmen. It’s kind of
gritty and an almost self-admittance that
what they are doing is trashy.
The song pops in and out of popularity
every so often. Punk rockers The Ramones
and The Cramps did versions of it (and if
you are a fan of the song I recommend you
check out their versions of it).
It’s also appeared in some movies as
well as on television shows, most notably
“Family Guy.”
Songs come and go, but remember, love
it or hate it, “the bird is the word.”
Rick Palsgrove is managing editor of the
Messenger Newspapers.
that benefit from the widening should pay
for the project. He said Hamilton Township
gains no benefits from the widening of
Alum Creek Drive and that the trustees
are happy to submit the letter endorsing it,
but they have no money to help pay for it.
CONCEALING UNSIGHTLY TEETH
If your front teeth are so unattractive
that you try to hide
them with a closed-lip smile or
with your hand covering your
mouth, you may be interested
in one of the new advances in
esthetic dentistry: laminate veneers.
Veneers are customized, laboratory-produced
coverings
that fit over the front and sides
of the tooth. They can be used
to correct a variety of smilespoiling
imperfections, including
stains, cracks, or chips. With
veneers, your teeth can be
made longer or wider, and
Dr. Kelly
many spacing problems can be
corrected. By concealing unsightly
teeth, these naturallooking
veneers mean that you
need not cover up your smile
ever again.
Veneers offer certain advantages
over other, more involved
or time consuming cosmetic
treatments. Veneering is a relatively
conservative approach,
requiring just a slight
reduction in the tooth’s surface.
Women’s History - Honoring
The Past and Casting Forward
Dear Neighbor,
As we celebrate Women's History Month, it's imperative
that we not only reflect on the incredible
accomplishments of women throughout history
but also take concrete steps to ensure that
progress continues. We stand on the shoulders of
trailblazers who fought tirelessly for women’s
rights. Our duty as a community is to honor their
legacy by actively supporting and uplifting
women today.
Reflecting on the past year, I am proud to have
sponsored legislation like SB 93 and co-sponsored
HB 35, which directly address pressing issues
facing women in our society. These
initiatives represent crucial steps toward improving
maternal health and seeking justice for survivors
of sexual abuse. However, our work is far
from over.
To truly advance the cause of women's rights, we
must remain vigilant and proactive in our efforts.
It's not enough to simply acknowledge the
achievements of women; we must actively work
to dismantle the barriers that still exist. This
means advocating for policies that promote gender
equality, providing support and resources for
women in all aspects of their lives, and fostering
a culture that values and respects the contributions
of women.
As leaders, we have a responsibility to lead by example
and create opportunities for women to
thrive. By championing the advancement of
women, we not only honor the legacy of those
who came before us and ensure a brighter future
for generations to come.
But supporting women isn't just the responsibility
of those in positions of power – it's something
everyone can do. Whether through simple acts of
encouragement, advocating for equal opportunities,
or challenging stereotypes and biases, we
all have a role in creating a more equitable
society.
So let us use Women's History Month as a catalyst
for change – a reminder of our progress and the
work that still lies ahead. Together, we can build
a legacy of support and empowerment for
women that will be remembered for generations.
CW paving to begin
Plus other CW Council news
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
The arrival of spring has Canal
Winchester gearing up for street, sidewalk,
and park improvements across the city.
During a March 18 Canal Winchester
City Council work session, Construction
Services Director Bill Sims said work continues
on a three-season shelter at McGill
Park.
“We anticipate it to be complete by May
1,” said Sims, who added he anticipates
physical work to begin on the park’s pickleball
courts by April 1.
Bids recently opened on the remainder
of the High Street and Waterloo Street
intersection improvement project, which
includes paver removal, new crosswalks
and sidewalks. Sims expects to have legislation
awarding the contract to Decker
Construction for the first meeting in April.
Decker was also awarded the 2024
Street Program project. Initial notices to
residents on affected streets were recently
notified.
“We’re going to be resurfacing Sarwell
Drive North, Franklin and Elizabeth
streets, West Columbus Street from High
Street to Washington and previous parking
areas will now be permeable pavers. We’re
going to resurface Clinton Street from
Columbus Street to Groveport Road as
well. We’ll be doing curb and gutter repair
on Old Creek Lane and we have some bike
path work as well, so the Diley Road bike
path will be resurfaced and the bike path
in Westchester Park will be resurfaced.”
Sims said as part of the street program,
a small portion of the South High Street
project at 20 S. High St. will be improved.
“We need to make that happen pretty
quick,” said Sims.
Communications
Council was updated on their
Communication Working Group, spearheaded
by committee representative Will
Bennett. He said the survey is ready and
the next step is determining the best way
to distribute it to the citizens of Canal
Winchester.
“We’re looking at postcard mailings.
We’re looking at doorhangers,”said Bennett.
“We talked about press releases. We want to
make sure we are hitting all of the channels,
digital alerts, but also print materials
that hit a different demographic. We’ll have
surveys available at the city office to pick
up. Then we can synthesize the information
and areas of opportunity if a shift is needed.
It’s an opportunity to learn.”
Anti-prostitution operation
Fairfield County Sheriff’s Department Sgt.
Strong reported on a recent anti-prostitution
operation in the Gender-Waterloo area.
“A few weeks ago, we set up a John
sting at a local hotel,” said Strong. “I think
we nabbed nine arrests in a matter of six
hours. It’s not going to be tolerated as long
as we provide police service to the city. We
eye opener for some of them.”
CWJRD and Tomahawks
Councilwoman Jill Amos, who also sits
on the Canal Winchester Joint Recreation
Board said, “The Tomahawks attended the
school board meeting last week (March
11)."
The Tomahawks organization was
asked to schedule a meeting with district
representatives and to present a proposal
to the school board.
“We received a note the next day saying
they did not want to pursue football with
the CWJRD any longer and did not plan to
run football at all this upcoming season,”
said Amos.
The CWJRD plans to host football for
the 2024 season and is currently seeking
volunteers to help with the program. (See
“Damsel” is a mix of
Cinderella and “Die Hard”
Once upon a time, the stories in books
and movies were filled with meek young
women, usually a princess or royal of some
sort, trapped in a bad situation. Sad, alone,
and defenseless, she would sit atop her
tower and wait for a strapping man to
come and save her, whisking her off to a
happily ever after.
Nowadays, the stories in books and
movies are filled with subversions to the
old fairy tale cliché of the damsel in distress.
Rather than conveying a message
that one should sit around and wait to be
saved, they encourage the bright young
lasses to pick up a sword (literal or
metaphorical) and fight to control their
own destiny. Although these stories have
become something of a cliché in and of
themselves, it is never a bad thing to be
reminded that one can use their wit and
skill to get out of situations they do not
want to be in. The latest offering of this
worthy message comes from Netflix and a
young star who knows something about
perseverance.
In the cheekily titled “Damsel,” Millie
Bobby Brown plays Elodie, the sweet and
kind elder daughter of Lord Bayford (Ray
Winstone). She presides over a community
in which there is not enough to go around;
the harsh landscape makes the ground less
fertile and her subjects often struggle to
find enough food or heat. To try to make up
for the lack, she scavenges the forest for
food and lumber to make sure that her
family and her people do not starve or
freeze to death.
Living in such a barren place can make
one desperate, which is why her father is
so willing to turn her over to a suitor from
a faraway land. “They are offering us food
and riches beyond our dreams,” Lord
Bayford tells his daughter. Despite her
reluctance to marry — she wants nothing
more than to sail the high seas in search of
a grand adventure — she is willing to do so
because of her loyalty to her family and to
her people.
Elodie is immediately struck by her new
home; the air is warm and clean, the land
is fertile and bountiful, and the homes and
palaces are wrapped in luxury. The only
thing more impressive is the fact that her
suitor, Prince Henry (Nick Robinson) is
close to her age, handsome, and has a full
head of lush hair.
The only thing that truly gives Elodie
and her stepmother pause is the fierce
Queen Isabelle (Robin Wright) who is regal
and remote, rebuffing any attempt at
friendship from either pair. Lady Bayford
tells Elodie she does not have to go through
with the marriage, but the young woman
knows what she must do: wed, start a family,
and perhaps work toward a happily
ever after with her handsome but bland
husband-to-be.
After the wedding, Elodie is taken to the
mountainside where a strange ceremony is
being conducted. The
guests are all adored
with masks a la “Eyes
Wide Shut” and her
mother-in-law stands
at the altar with a dagger
that is to be used to
mix the blood of the
newlyweds. Although
Elodie is unsure and a
little freaked out at
The Reel Deal
Dedra
Cordle
Oftentimes while watching
“Damsel,” I found myself wishing that it
could have had a traditional theatrical
release, because the settings are
filled with enticing details that bolster
some of the weaknesses of the
screenplay and story.
this point, she goes with the flow, trusting
her husband and new family to do right by
her. But then Prince Henry sweeps her off
her feet and casually throws her into a
chasm where a fire-breathing dragon with
a big grudge against the royal family of
Aurea awaits.
Up until this point, this movie was looking
more like “Damsel: Cinderella” than
anything else. But when she is thrown into
the lair it turns into “Damsel: Die Hard” as
Elodie tries to escape from the exceptionally
well-designed dragon, played with great
menace by the smoky voiced Shohreh
Aghdashloo. At times, it often has the feel of
a video game where Elodie faces one obstacle
after another, making some progress but
not enough. Brown is on her own for a long
stretch of time, and she is quite effective at
alternating fear and determination, using
wit and skill to try to survive the dragon
lurking around every dark corner.
The one major complaint I had about
this dark fantasy written by Dan Mazeau
and directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is
that it does not feel as if there are any
stakes at play. Although the heroine is
being stalked and harmed by a dragon, we
know that no real harm will come to her so
it lacks that urgency and investment needed
to sell a fantasy.
Oftentimes while watching “Damsel,” I
found myself wishing that it could have
had a traditional theatrical release,
because the settings are filled with enticing
details that bolster some of the weaknesses
of the screenplay and story. But
even on the smaller screen, the female-led
and rage-filled take on the traditional fairy
tale is ultimately worthy of a watch.
“Damsel” is now streaming on Netflix.
the value of their service
this publication. In order
to avoid misunderstandings,
some advertisers do
