primarily affect women, children and
people with disabilities.
The idea of creating a safe space for
people goes hand in hand with Bhuti’s
dream when he was growing up,
which was to be a social worker. “I have
always had an innate calling to work
with and help various people at all
levels,” he explains, “and this is the ideal
way to make that dream a reality. There
is a lot of hardship on ground level in
the area. High levels of unemployment
and poverty are prevalent in these
communities, and we need to help
wherever we can.” One of Bhuti’s recent
success stories is a group of children
he discovered while out walking in a
section of Msholozi Village.
“It was an extremely hot day, and the
kids were swimming in the river. Not
all of them can swim, and there were
other dangers as well. On this occasion,
one of the children spotted a snake
in the riverbed, so they evacuated the
water and ran away. I realised this was
an opportunity for another project,
one in which I could help the kids and
get the community involved at the
same time. I chatted to the owner of a
The project construction site
local private swimming pool and asked
her if I could bring about 30 kids to
the pool every month. We agreed on
a rate, which I pay for, and I also found
sponsors for food, sweets and snacks,
so that the kids can spend the whole
day playing and enjoying themselves.”
The multipurpose centre project is
currently under way and progressing
nicely. “We have started with the
building of the small meeting hall,
which will cater for approximately 500
people, as well as the two guardrooms,”
he explains. “We are in the process
of looking for sponsors for building
cement to complete the first phase
of the project, and the next phase is
to build a wall around the premises.
It is baby steps at the moment, but
we will get there. Our core mission at
the moment is to partner with various
corporates regarding construction
from the ground up. There is quite
a lot we need to ultimately get the
project off the ground, which is where
corporate sponsorship will come in,
especially in the line of bricks, cement,
sound equipment, steel poles, roof
sheeting, computer equipment, chairs,
tables, etc.”
At the end of the day, everyone needs
to do their part in making the world a
better place for the less fortunate, and
as they say, it takes a village. Not only
to raise a child, but to strengthen a
community and make it a better place
for everyone.
