The most common cost for a migrant to get to Bangkok or elsewhere deep inside Thailand<br />

the workplace in Thailand. This fee includes transportation, but migrants need to have<br />

Since migrants are generally not from better off households, they are unlikely to have<br />

money at hand to pay for trips to Thailand, especially deeper into Thailand. They tend to<br />

take loans, most of which have interest rates of 4–5 percent per month, according to the<br />

FGDs. The survey found that overall about half took loans, only 8 percent could use their<br />

own savings, and 42 percent used household savings (Table 3.8). Participants in an FGD in
