ROYAL GARDENS - A WALK
THROUGH THE KING'S LANDSCAPES
The walk starts from Hillerød Station, then along Nordre Jernbanegade and out of
Helsingørsgade to the small C. Wesenberg-Lund alley which leads directly to the Lake Path.
Follow this along the lake and into the historic Baroque Garden by Frederiksborg Castle.
In the Baroque Garden, you can see four royal monograms, one for each of the rulers who have
played a role in the garden's history; namely Frederik IV, who laid out the Baroque Garden in
the 1720s. Christian VI and Frederik V, during whose reign the garden existed, and Margrethe
II, who inaugurated the restored baroque garden in 1996. At the upper part of the castle
garden lies Café Havehuset, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea.
From the Baroque Garden, the walk continues into Frederiksborg Castle Garden. Unlike the
strictly laid-out Baroque Garden, the "wild" nature dominates the castle garden where gravel
paths wind up and down through the gently rolling terrain.
The small miniature castle, Badstueslottet, was built in 1580 and is still used by the royal family
for hunting lunches. On special occasions, Badstueslottet is open to the public. Frederiksborg
Castle, on the other hand, is always open. The castle houses royal halls and chambers, the
castle church, and the National History Museum. At the entrance lies Rababergården, whose
menu is based on the culinary heritage of North Zealand.
From the Castle Bridge, turn right onto the Lake Path, past Posen, a green area with a
playground and toilets. The path continues along the lakeshore to Hillerød Square, with the
statue of King Frederik V, and from there back to the starting point at Hillerød Station.
