Diploma in Industrial Studies<br />

<strong>The</strong> Diploma in Industrial Studies <strong>of</strong> the OUSL<br />

is ideal for persons presently employed in<br />

various middle level management/technical<br />

grades in various industries. However, persons<br />

who wish to find employment in the industry<br />

may also follow this programme.<br />

<strong>Student</strong>s who have passed any* GCE (A/L)<br />

subject would be given 18 credits <strong>of</strong> academic<br />

exemption at Level 1, subject to a maximum <strong>of</strong><br />

54 credits. <strong>Student</strong>s, who have obtained 36<br />

credits in Level 1, either through completion <strong>of</strong><br />

courses or exemptions, could directly enter the<br />

Diploma programme. <strong>Student</strong>s who do not<br />

have any formal educational qualifications may<br />

enter the programme through the courses<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered in Levels 1 and 2 or through the<br />

Certificate programme in the relevant<br />

discipline. <strong>The</strong> minimum duration <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Diploma programme is two years and the<br />

medium <strong>of</strong> instruction is English. However,<br />

courses at Levels 1 and 2 are <strong>of</strong>fered in Sinhala,<br />

<strong>Tamil</strong>, and English media.<br />

<strong>The</strong> courses selected for the award <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Diploma in Industrial Studies shall be so as to<br />

meet the minimum requirements in each<br />

category as shown in Table 10. If the credits<br />

gained in any category exceed the maximum<br />

limit shown, only such maximum shall be used<br />

in computing the total credits. Particular<br />

combinations <strong>of</strong> compulsory courses, as given<br />

in Table 11, will entitle the students to the<br />

Diploma in the following specialised areas:<br />

Agriculture<br />

Apparel Production and Management<br />

Fashion Design &Product Development**<br />

Textile Manufacture<br />

Those who possess appropriate qualifications<br />

may seek exemptions from relevant courses <strong>of</strong><br />

the programme. Persons who are employed in a<br />

relevant industry and working in an<br />

environment that would satisfy the training<br />

requirements <strong>of</strong> the Faculty may seek<br />

exemption from the specific training modules.<br />

*<strong>Student</strong>s who wish to follow the Agriculture specialisation<br />

should have minimum <strong>of</strong> three passes from the GCE (A/L),<br />

<strong>Sri</strong> <strong>Lanka</strong> from among the subjects, Biology (or Botany &<br />

Zoology), Chemistry, Physics, Agriculture and Combined<br />

Mathematics (or Pure Mathematics & Applied<br />

Mathematics) including the subject Biology or Botany.<br />

<strong>Student</strong>s who passed Agriculture as a subject in Arts or<br />

Commerce stream should follow foundation programme<br />

conducted by the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Natural Sciences and obtain<br />

two passes including Botany (PSF1305 & PSF2305) and any<br />

subject from Zoology (PSF1306 & PSF2306) or Chemistry<br />

(PSF1303 & PSF2303) or Physics (PSF1302 & PSF2302).<br />

** Depending on the no. <strong>of</strong> applications, a limited no. <strong>of</strong><br />

applicants will be selected after a screening process.<br />
