Diploma in Industrial Studies
The Diploma in Industrial Studies of the OUSL
is ideal for persons presently employed in
various middle level management/technical
grades in various industries. However, persons
who wish to find employment in the industry
may also follow this programme.
Students who have passed any* GCE (A/L)
subject would be given 18 credits of academic
exemption at Level 1, subject to a maximum of
54 credits. Students, who have obtained 36
credits in Level 1, either through completion of
courses or exemptions, could directly enter the
Diploma programme. Students who do not
have any formal educational qualifications may
enter the programme through the courses
offered in Levels 1 and 2 or through the
Certificate programme in the relevant
discipline. The minimum duration of the
Diploma programme is two years and the
medium of instruction is English. However,
courses at Levels 1 and 2 are offered in Sinhala,
Tamil, and English media.
The courses selected for the award of the
Diploma in Industrial Studies shall be so as to
meet the minimum requirements in each
category as shown in Table 10. If the credits
gained in any category exceed the maximum

limit shown, only such maximum shall be used
in computing the total credits. Particular
combinations of compulsory courses, as given
in Table 11, will entitle the students to the
Diploma in the following specialised areas:
Agriculture
Apparel Production and Management
Fashion Design &Product Development**
Textile Manufacture
Those who possess appropriate qualifications
may seek exemptions from relevant courses of
the programme. Persons who are employed in a
relevant industry and working in an
environment that would satisfy the training
requirements of the Faculty may seek
exemption from the specific training modules.
*Students who wish to follow the Agriculture specialisation
should have minimum of three passes from the GCE (A/L),
Sri Lanka from among the subjects, Biology (or Botany &
Zoology), Chemistry, Physics, Agriculture and Combined
Mathematics (or Pure Mathematics & Applied
Mathematics) including the subject Biology or Botany.
Students who passed Agriculture as a subject in Arts or
Commerce stream should follow foundation programme
conducted by the Faculty of Natural Sciences and obtain
two passes including Botany (PSF1305 & PSF2305) and any
subject from Zoology (PSF1306 & PSF2306) or Chemistry
(PSF1303 & PSF2303) or Physics (PSF1302 & PSF2302).
** Depending on the no. of applications, a limited no. of
applicants will be selected after a screening process.
