Spring 2012 In-Service <strong>Course</strong> Catalog<br />

This course has been designed to provide patrol officers, investigators, or juvenile officers<br />

with additional methods and information for interviewing children in criminal<br />

investigations.<br />

This course will provide a framework for interviewing children who are victims or witnesses<br />

to crimes.<br />

EMPHASIS WILL BE PLACED ON PRACTICAL EXERCISES CONDUCTED<br />

THROUGHOUTTHE COURSE. THIS COURSE WILL UTILTIZE CASE VIGNETTES<br />

FOR PRACTICAL APPLICATION.<br />

Topics to be discussed:<br />

- Interview settings for children<br />

- Child development and cognitive abilities – What should your expectations be for<br />

different age groups<br />

- Cognitive evaluation<br />

- Types of questions – From open ended to leading<br />

- Interviewing aides<br />

- Stages of a child interview<br />

- Establishing timelines with children<br />

- Blocks to interviewing children – Disabilities and Mental Health issues.<br />

WHILE ISSUES OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TO CHILDREN AND SEXUAL ASSAULT<br />

OF CHILDREN WILL BE DISCUSSED, IT IS NOT THE INTENT OF THIS COUSE TO<br />

TEACH THOSE TYPES OF INTERVIEW TECHNIQUES.<br />

Instructor for this course will be Danielle Butts of Hull House.<br />

Basic concepts, liabilities and state requirements will be reviewed by an experienced police<br />

administrator. This course is an ideal review or introduction for supervisors, officers in<br />

charge, and civilian staff regarding the responsibilities, processes, searches, and liabilities<br />

when operating a lock up.<br />

During the process of arrest, booking, supervision and release, those monitoring detainees<br />

must understand the critical issues regarding weapon control, searches, access to the<br />

detainee and know what should be in place for escape prevention and protection of staff.<br />

Topics to be addressed will incude:<br />

Illinois requirements as to jails, temporary holding facilities, secure and non secure<br />

detentions<br />

Useful and required documentation and their purposes<br />

Physical plant, safety, and sanitation concerns<br />

Detainee rights and priviliges<br />

Medical, drug and mental healthcare standards<br />

Standards of care and supervision of detainess.<br />

PERTAINING TO LOCK UP PROCEDURES.<br />
