In these cases, a critical step the alignment of expectations has been missed in the "on boarding" process that occurs with the individual hire/promotee. When this misalignment occurs, whether it is actual or perceived, frustration quickly develops and performance declines. So that these mind-sets may be avoided, it is essential that employees at every level have an understanding of what is expected of them from both internal and external stakeholders. These employees must have clear comprehension of what their new roles are and how they will be evaluated. This two day program will provide participants with strategies and tools for better integrating the expectations of organizations and the employees that work in them. Topics to be addressed in this program include: - Defining effective supervision - Creating strategies for integrating organizational expectations into shift/department operations - Developing strategies for communicating expectations, both internally and externally - Identifying and assessing causal factors when misalignment occurs This course will be taught by: Instructors with the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy. **Cancellations must be received by NEMRT 35 days prior to the start of this program in order to avoid being billed. Street gangs plague many communities throughout the United States. Many police departments do not have the resources necessary to fund specialized units to address gang crimes, thus they have come to rely upon patrol supervisors and officers to handle these issues. This course has been developed to provide patrol supervisors and officers with strategies for controlling gang activity and reducing gang-related crime within their respective communities. Topics to be covered include the following: - Conducting gang assessments - Collecting intelligence on street gangs - Developing directed patrols in targeted areas - Coordinating with school resource officers - Conducting "Knock and Talks" - Fostering interagency cooperation and collaboration - Civil Gang Injunctions and enhanced penalty laws This course will be taught by: Investigator Bruce Malkin, DuPage County State's Attorney. Spring 2012 In-Service Course Catalog Few areas of criminal law change more rapidly than the laws of arrest, search, and seizure. As a result, officers must be aware of current concepts and principles used by the courts to judge their arrest, search, and seizure techniques. This three day seminar analyzes recent trends within United States and Illinois Supreme Court decisions, local case law, and relevant Illinois statutes. Course topics include: - The 4th Amendment - Probable cause - Reasonable suspicion - Stop and frisk - Consent searches and vehicle searches - Arrests and arrest warrants - Detention as it relates to arrest - The exclusionary rule - The "Fruits of the Poisonous Tree" doctrine This course is designed to elicit officers' comments and questions and will encourage discussions regarding their daily experiences. This course will be taught by: Mr. Dale Anderson, Attorney at Law. **Cancellations must be received by NEMRT 35 days prior to the start of this program in order to avoid being billed. This two day arson investigation course will address the need for police officers to recognize that key evidence can be found at arson scenes and what steps are necessary to identify, collect, preserve, and submit such evidence to the crime lab. Topics to be addressed include: - Motives and methods associated with arson - Considerations of first response and preliminary investigations - Accelerants and basics of fire chemistry - Heat transfer and convection, radiation, and direct flame - Phases of burning - Fire conditions, including flashover and backdraft - Indicators of origin and/or cause - Suspect patterns and profiles - Support agencies and services This course will be taught by: Detective Ross Horne, Chicago Police Dept./Bomb & Arson Unit. 43
