Spring 2012 In-Service <strong>Course</strong> Catalog<br />

This 40 hour ILETSB certified course has been designed for both new and experienced<br />

officers and closely examines legal issues critical to investigation and preparation of cases<br />

for successful prosecution in Illinois.<br />

<strong>Course</strong> topics will be broken down as follows:<br />

Day 1 Foundation considerations in searches and seizures to include:<br />

- Developing probable cause and reasonable suspicion<br />

- The exclusionary rule<br />

- Searches incident to arrest<br />

- Consent searches<br />

- Use of drug dogs<br />

- Abandoned property<br />

- Trash searches<br />

- MSR searches<br />

- Community caretaking<br />

Day 2 Search and seizure continued, to include:<br />

- Protective sweeps<br />

- Terry stops<br />

- Frisks<br />

- Controlling vehicle occupants<br />

- Seizing containers and vehicles for dog sniffs<br />

- Mobile conveyance searches<br />

- Entry to arrest<br />

- Plain view and plain touch<br />

- Inventories of vehicles<br />

Day 3 Searches and seizures continued, to include:<br />

- Search warrant preparation and execution<br />

- Unannounced entries<br />

- Detention of persons during warrant execution<br />

- Protection of informant identity<br />

- Post arrest obligations of officers<br />

Day 4 Criminal law continued. Interviews and interrogations to include:<br />

- Miranda<br />

- Voluntariness<br />

- Sixth Amendment concerns<br />

- Identification procedures to include:<br />

- Lineups<br />

- Showups<br />

- Photographic identification<br />

Day 5 Use of force, DUI and update of significant IVC changes, and juvenile law and<br />

Juvenile Court Act updates<br />
