Spring 2012 In-Service <strong>Course</strong> Catalog<br />

This class has been developed for the law enforcement officer working in an educational<br />

environment who has already attended the NASRO 40 Hour Basic SRO <strong>Course</strong>. This<br />

Advanced course will provide skills needed by experienced School Resource Officers to<br />

identify and defuse potentially dangerous situations on campus.<br />

<strong>Course</strong> topics include:<br />

- History of school based policing<br />

- Roles & responsibilities of the SRO<br />

- Causes of school violence<br />

- Problem solving<br />

- Peer mediation programs<br />

- School discipline<br />

- Media relations<br />

- Crime prevention strategies<br />

- SRO/Administration relations<br />

This course is designed to benefit DARE, Juvenile, School Resource, and School Liaison<br />

Officers.<br />

Officers will receive an Advanced SRO <strong>Course</strong> Certificate upon successful completion of<br />

the program. This course also meets a portion of the requirements for receiving the NASRO<br />

National Practitioner Certificate.<br />

The National Association of School Resource Officers is a nationally recognized, non profit<br />

organization comprised of over 3,000 police officers and school administrators from across<br />

the United States and Canada. NASRO is the largest training organization for school<br />

resource officers and provides course work specifically designed for and taught by school<br />

resource officers.<br />

All NASRO instructors are certified law enforcement instructors who hold the National SRO<br />

Practitioner Certificate and are currently employed as school resource officers in the U.S.A.<br />

and Canada. The NASRO staff has trained police officers throughout the United States,<br />

Canada and the U.S. Virgin Islands.<br />

**Cancellations for this program must be received by NEMRT 35 days prior to the start of<br />

class in order to avoid being billed.<br />

While only a fraction of households contain firearms, almost all have knives and/or other<br />

edged weapons in them. Successful completion of this three day PPCT certification school<br />

will enable participants to instruct other officers in self defense techniques for edged weapon<br />

attacks.<br />

Topics to be addressed include:<br />

- The most common types of edged weapon attacks<br />

- Current information on survival reaction time<br />

- Legal review and case law<br />

Participants need to bring the following equipment to class:<br />

- Elbow pads<br />

- Soccer shin guards<br />

- Forearm pads<br />

This course will be taught by: Sergeant Robert Nicholas and Commander Michael<br />

Burroughs, both with the Elmhurst Police Department.<br />
