Hurricanes storm past Tsunami
30th January 2011
Hurricanes 60 - 0 Tsunami
On a warm Sunday afternoon the
meteorological battle of the south
began with Gareth “Dash” Davies
returning the opening kick off deep
into the Tsunami’s half. Running back
Temi Odeyemi made a solid start on
his way to an impressive 196 yard, 4
touchdown performance as he carried
4 times on the drive, eventually
punching it in at the 1 yard line. The
extra point bounced agonisingly off
the right upright and Hertfordshire
led 6-0. This dominant drive set the
tone for the Hurricanes’ offence which
averaged over 14 yards a carry and
ensured the punt team remained on the
sideline the entire game.
After Herts’ defence forced a quick 3
and out on Brighton’s opening drive
the Hurricanes’ offence once again
18 Inside American Football - May 2011
moved the ball quickly down the field
when Joe Thompson connected with
wide receiver Tom Roberts who took
the ball down to the one. On the next
play Odeyemi walked into the endzone
untouched for his second touchdown in
as many drives.
Set up with excellent field position
following an interception by linebacker
Richard Ward the 3 play drive saw 3rd
year WR Dominic Husbands, aided
by blocks from Flatman and Davies,
take the short screen pass 18 yards and
sneak inside the pylon for the score.
On the next drive the Hurricanes’
defence again forced the turnover
when a wayward pass was intercepted
by Linebacker Mike Osunsina to give
the Hurricanes’ offence excellent field
position. On the second play of the
drive Thompson hit rookie WR Mark
Flatman who slipped through 2 tackles
on his way to the endzone. A quick
toss to Husbands and the 2PAT gave
the Hurricanes a 21-0 lead before the
1st quarter expired.
After a strong drive from the Tsunami
that saw them push deep into
Hertfordshire territory the Hurricanes’
defence tightened and a thunderous
hit by Wilson and Cowley on the
Brighton WR sent the ball sailing into
the arms of Osunsina for his second
interception.
Whilst the defence brought the
thunder, it was certainly the offence
who provided the lightening. Pinned
deep in their own half after the
interception “Dash” Davies came in
at running back and ripped off an 18
