MATCH REPORTS
Hull Sharks -v- York Centurions, Challenge Trophy Round 1
20th March 2011
Sharks 232 - 2 Centurions
To say this was any other match would
undermine the hard work each team
had put in throughout the season in
order to be on the field that day. For
the Centurions it would be another
chance to beat the Hull Sharks and
make their way to the next round. For
the Sharks, it would be 8 years of bad
history cleared up and revenge for a
game they felt should have gone their
way earlier in the season.
At the entrance of the YPI grounds,
the banner ‘BEAT YORK’ was clearly
visible as well as the Sharks’ UH
emblem at the centre of the pitch. All
the more reason for the Sharks to win
and that much more disgrace if they
lose.
Warm ups done. Coin tossed. Kick off
Centurions.
1st Quarter
The match started like most matches
would, with each team trying to get the
dominating presence to set the tone of
the match. The Centurions cleared the
back of the end zone with their kickoff
leaving the Sharks Offence to begin
with a disappointing opening drive
from their own 20 yard line.
A very impressive Defensive show
then put the ball back into the hands of
the Hull Offence.
Their second drive however went the
length of the field crossing over into
the second quarter with Paddy ‘Edge’
White, making a genuine attempt for
a touchdown but was pushed out of
bounds at the 1 yard line by the York
safety. A pass by Sharks QB Chris
‘Brady’ Summerling to Benjamin
‘Blowie’ Walker, saw the Sharks take
the lead with 6-0
2nd Quarter
Things picked up for the Centurions
in the 2nd quarter as they made a
safety after a poorly downed punt by
the Sharks. Down after, down, each
team tried to outdo the other but the
tides turned when Dan ‘Mini Chunk’
Weston made an amazing recovery,
putting the offense back on for another
attempt at a touchdown. While things
seemed good, on the sideline, an
overwhelming sense of déjà vu took
hold of those who saw what could go
wrong, very much like the pre-season
game.
HT Sharks 6 – York 2
3rd Quarter
With either team conceding a
touchdown, it was hard to predict
anything, even with a 6-2 lead from the
Sharks. This had all happened before:
getting ahead of themselves after a
touchdown, when out of the blue,
Centurion WR #14 made it all the
way to the Shark 10-yard line from an
end around, resulting in an imminent
touchdown.
Things did however change this time
around. The Sharks defense, with the
support of an enthusiastic sideline,
refused to let allow points or advances
