Administration’s Message
With the Holiday Season just around the corner, I know that many of you are
busy preparing for the festive season. The Christmas break will begin with an
early dismissal on Friday, December 21, 2011 at 2:30 pm and classes will
resume on Monday, January 7, 2013.
We had a very successful term 1 reporting period. The student led
conferences went extremely well. It was a real pleasure seeing our students
sharing and demonstrating their learning over the course of the term with
their care givers. We had 79% of our families attend the conferences.
It appears the new provincial report card was well received. As you are
aware, River East Transcona has implemented the new provincial report card
for students in Grades 1 through 12 this fall. We hope you have had a
moment to access the brochure created by Manitoba Education, which
explains more about the new report card. We encourage you to go to the
following website: http://www.edu.gov.mb.ca/k12/assess/report_cards/docs/pb_1-
Our K-5 Winter Concert is on December 13 th . I hope you take the time to join
us. The staff and students have been working very hard in preparing for the
concert. The students are very excited about having the opportunity to
perform in front of family and friends. Also, on a musical note, Ms. Jensen
has begun her leave and Ms. C. Jackson has taken over her teaching
responsibilities.
We are continuing to build our schools email distribution list for emailing the
school newsletter to families. If we do not have your email address yet please
call the school at 204-958-6532. The practice will be that we will have copies
in the family room, the office and at the Plessis/Robson resource centre.
Please take the time to browse through the newsletter. It will give you a pretty
good flavor of what has been happening at Bernie Wolfe Community School.
On behalf of the staff and students at Bernie Wolfe Community School, I
would like to wish all of you a Joyous Holiday Season.
I am three inches tall I am so small.
I can’t even measure myself against the wall.
I can’t eat oranges because they are too big.
I can’t even do the Irish jig.
A jellybean would be a thousand year feast.
Grade 7 Boys Volleyball Team
This year's volleyball season for the Grade 7 boys began in early September
and ended November 26th. Our team played in a series of mini-tournaments
throughout the school division. In addition, they participated in
two invitational tournaments and represented our school very well. As the
season progressed, not only did our players develop fine volleyball skills but
they displayed excellent sportsman-like qualities as well.
On behalf of our team, we would like to thank all of the parents who
supported our team throughout the season. It was greatly appreciated!
I would like to encourage all of our players to continue to play volleyball
in the near future. It was an absolute pleasure coaching this year's team and I wish them all the
best!
Sincerely,
Ms. L. Vizza
Coach
Grade 7 Girls Volleyball Team
The grade 7 girl’s volleyball team was a huge success this year. For some girls, this was the first time
they had played competitive sports. Others were veterans who had played sports competitively for
years. One thing they all had in common was none had ever played volleyball at this level before. It
took a few practices before they understood the rotation, but after that, things went well.
Between all of the mini-tournaments, our home tournament here at BWCS, and our tournament at
John Gunn, I can say that all the girls had fun, and so did the coaches. We enjoyed watching the girls
grow from a team that always bumped the ball over the net, to a team that could use three hits and
even spike the ball. Congratulations grade 7 girls on a great year!!
Mr. Hunter and Mr. Kozaczka
Grade 8 Girls Volleyball Team
The grade 8 girl’s volleyball team had a very exciting and busy volleyball season. The
grade 8 girls practiced two times a week; played one night a week with back to back
games; and entered 4 tournaments. With every practice and game the girls skills
continued to improve. The end result was an exciting last game of the season. The
grade 8 girl’s volleyball team ended with a win and a very close second match. Great
job girls!
Mrs. Gydé and Mr. Loewen
Grade 8 Boys Volleyball Team
The grade 8 boy’s volleyball team had an outstanding volleyball season this year! There were
countless highlights but the most memorable ones were the highlights of teamwork, sportsmanship
and growth displayed from game to game and tournament to tournament!
As coaches we coached and watched with pride as these gentlemen grew not only in their individual
athletic abilities but their personal growth in character as well. As the season progressed we watched
the bar rise a little more each week both individually as well as a collective team. Their placement in
the tournaments they played complimented this growth, placing third in both tournaments.
Personally, I would like to thank my assistant coach Ms. Dynkavitch for her commitment and
dedication to the team and congratulate the following students for displaying the values of Bernie
Wolfe Community School while home and away: setters; Isaiah, Tyler, Dawson, right side; Brian and
Adrian, power; Miguel, John, Brandon, Dillon and Raeden, middle; Gray, Mason, Nieco, Andy,
Jaspreet, managers; Logique, Bryson.
Way to go gentlemen you were a pleasure to coach!
Mr. Struch
Library News
The book fair was a huge success! Our library will receive dozens of new books, which all students
will be able to enjoy. A grade one student won $25.00 towards books for herself and $25.00 for her
classroom. We love seeing the excitement on the faces of students as they see the library transform
into the book fair. Thank you to all that supported the fair!
If you would like to help cover or shelve books, it would be greatly appreciated. Please see Mrs.
Hepworth or myself, in the library.
We wish everyone a wonderful holiday season, and of course keep reading!
PAC NEWS
The Parent Council would like to start off by thanking Debbie Kutzan for all her hard work and dedication
to Bernie Wolfe School and the P.A.C committee. As you all know, Debbie has resigned her position as the
Community Connector from our school. She has helped us in many ways and the Parent Council would like
look forward to continue working together!!
We would like to also thank all of our families/participants for supporting us in our fall fundraiser. We
TPUE NEWS
I am pleased to give you an update on the program since the beginning of the school year.
We are very excited to have all positions filled on our board this year with energetic parents
planning activities for the children enrolled in the Ukrainian bilingual program, and to offer
support to the teachers as needed. Our goal is to make our childrens’ education of the
Ukrainian language and culture a great memory they will have for years to come. We would
like to remind all parents that you DO NOT need to come from a Ukrainian back-ground or
even speak the language for your children to be part of the program. Kindergarten children have a great opportunity to
test out the program as it is a great introduction for a very small part of their day, and it is still not too late for the 2012-
2013 school year to do so. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Melnyk our wonderful grade
k-2 teacher at omelnyk@retsd.md.ca or by phone at the school. She begins creating the foundation of a great education
in a very small class setting. Most children really enjoy the smaller group, which builds great friendships, and allows the
teachers to work more one on one with children. Mr. Marynovskyy (grades 3-5) and Mr. Iwan (grades 6-8) continue with
their education. Grade one enrollment is very much still encouraged. Mrs. Melnyk has also found children that begin in
grade one, are successful and catch on quickly.
Currently we are busy planning our St. Nicholas celebration. We are expecting his visit on December 19 th at 12:30 p.m.,
we are planning a perogy lunch and the children will perform for him in the theatre. We are inviting some of the younger
children in the school to enjoy St. Nicholas’ visit with us and to enjoy the performance. We would like to extend our
invitation to all families in the Bernie Wolfe Community who are interested in our celebration to come and experience
what St. Nicholas is all about, and it is always nice to encourage the kids with our support no matter what ethnic back
ground you are proudly a part of, we are part of a community. I look forward to updating you in the New Year. If you
have any questions please feel free to contact the school or myself @ kcdcmartin@gmail.com Cathy Martin Vice
chairperson and mother of two children very happily learning Ukrainian!
