as I was hang<strong>in</strong>g my solo-exhibition that was<br />
supposed to run 3 months, one <strong>of</strong> the city<br />
supervisors warned me that Mayor Willie Brown<br />
cannot be expected to walk past a vag<strong>in</strong>a<br />
everyday on the way to his <strong>of</strong>fice. <strong>The</strong> “vag<strong>in</strong>a”<br />
actually was a close-up <strong>of</strong> my armpit with chicken<br />
claws.<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce the early 90's, my photographs have<br />
been publicly defended by Freedom <strong>of</strong> Speech<br />
organizations such as artsave/People for the<br />
American Way and the ACLU. By witness<strong>in</strong>g<br />
first hand people's reactionary tendencies and<br />
unconscious addiction to standardization, these<br />
experiences with censorship have helped me<br />

clarify my role as an activist, writer, and visual<br />
artist. Through my images and collaborative<br />
performances, I want the body to cont<strong>in</strong>ually defy<br />
the assumption that it can be easily categorized<br />
by blurr<strong>in</strong>g its own constructed boundaries <strong>of</strong><br />
difference/sameness, pleasure/pa<strong>in</strong>,<br />
expectation/unfamiliarity.<br />
Perhaps because I am a child <strong>of</strong> a<br />
holocaust survivor, multiple, contradictory<br />
perspectives feel <strong>in</strong>herent to the way I function<br />
both personally and politically. Instead <strong>of</strong><br />
automatically def<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g difference as threaten<strong>in</strong>g, I<br />
hope to construct environments <strong>in</strong> which we can<br />
discover how we are connected to what we th<strong>in</strong>k
