Presently, tools for all the machines are stored in the Tool Storage Area as shown in the Figure 1.1. Ocassionally a lot of time taken by the forklift truck driver to deliver the tool from the tool storage area to machine. In addition, files for tool allocation are kept in the tool storage area only. One person is responsible to keep the tool. If the Production and Planning controller (who determines the tool change for all the machines in Birkbys Plastics Limited) wishes to assign new production, and therefore the tool will be changed and he has to contact the tool storage personnel. If the person is busy, the production and Planning Controller has to go to the tool store himself. Time is wasted due to unnecessary movement.
