(PTSA) and the m<strong>at</strong>h rippartmpnt nwt on March 26 and<br />

April 1 to discuss the m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics program.<br />

Tlte PTSA sent a fe-page report to the m<strong>at</strong>h department and<br />

the <strong>Lowell</strong> administr<strong>at</strong>ion in February requiting the m<strong>at</strong>h department<br />

review its grading and honors enrollment policies.<br />

<strong>Lowell</strong> Executive Council (LEQ appointed Jhaila Brown «ir*i<br />

Rose Argudles March 25 to co-chair the committee dut former<br />

LEC chair P<strong>at</strong>ina Baysac cre<strong>at</strong>ed one year ago.<br />

"Our goal is tu rind n physical mascot and to increase school<br />

spirit," Arguetles saW. Special days to increase school spirit will<br />

be planned, such as a beach day when everyone dicsses in beach<br />

clothes.<br />

Brown and Arguelles Are the mascotApirit irxtxrutives. "But<br />

anyone f mm the student body can join," Brown said. NIT one will<br />

be forced to <strong>at</strong>tend the meetings. "Anyone who comes f<strong>at</strong> three of<br />

our meetings will be considered a Mascot member"<br />

Ihe committee is submitting announcements to Radio Unveil<br />

and the school bulletin, and the other members will nukr rxi>tcrs.<br />

Five student government officers and an Associ<strong>at</strong>ion of Spirit<br />

Leader* member signed up to help in the spirit /mascot committee.<br />

<strong>The</strong> San Francisco Press Cub recently awarded five journalism<br />

students from the Class of 1^92 $4300 in scholarship* for<br />

articles and photographs published in <strong>The</strong> l<strong>at</strong>veS last year.<br />

In the photography c<strong>at</strong>egory, Shelton Hsu took both first and<br />

second prizes for a total of $1,600. His winning shots were "Senior<br />

carter Ben tempest.." (Oct. 25,1W1) arxi "Cyrmuit isMie"<br />

(April 10,1992).<br />

In the editorial writing c<strong>at</strong>egory, Kevin Pox won the first place<br />

prize of J 1,000 for hb article "Some faculty conduct encumbers<br />

Kim won the second place prize of $600 for his article "Why do<br />

winning sports teams draw few fans, suffer lack o( respect?"<br />

(Jan.13,1992).<br />

In the fe<strong>at</strong>ure writing c<strong>at</strong>egory Richard Fong won first prize<br />

for his article "Escape into the world of virtual reality" (Apn 110,<br />

1992), ar*J Merry Chu won second prize for her article 'Teens<br />

shoplift with nerves of steal" (March 20,1992).<br />

In the news writing c<strong>at</strong>egory no prizes were a warded to Unveil<br />
