school on the basis of SAT-like entrance exams.
This year more than 10,000 students took the test;
800 were offered admission. New York's other
selective public high schools. Bronx Science and
Brooklyn Tech, accept students with slightly lower" "^
scores. Admissions are blind wrtn regard to race.
Last year, the student body was 51 percent Asian
and less than 10 percent other minorities. The
course load is strenuous. Students must take tour
years each of English, science, and history, three
years of math, and one year of drafting. In its early
days, Stuyvesant catered to European immigrants
who desired to improve their status through
careers m engineering. Drafting was made a
requirement and it still is. Today, students are
assisted by computers.
