school on the basis of SAT-like entrance exams.<br />

This year more than 10,000 students took the test;<br />

800 were offered admission. New York's other<br />

selective public high schools. Bronx Science and<br />

Brooklyn Tech, accept students with slightly lower" "^<br />

scores. Admissions are blind wrtn regard to race.<br />

Last year, the student body was 51 percent Asian<br />

and less than 10 percent other minorities. <strong>The</strong><br />

course load is strenuous. Students must take tour<br />

years each of English, science, and history, three<br />

years of m<strong>at</strong>h, and one year of drafting. In its early<br />

days, Stuyvesant c<strong>at</strong>ered to European immigrants<br />

who desired to improve their st<strong>at</strong>us through<br />

careers m engineering. Drafting was made a<br />

requirement and it still is. Today, students are<br />

assisted by computers.<br />
