Brief description of the tool
The data collection framework identifies the type and some sources of existing data that
may be useful in a community’s strategic planning to build community resilience.
Reasons for using the tool
The data collection framework can be used to facilitate the collection of data about your
community. Data collected can improve your knowledge of your community, helping you
to tell the story of the community, to identify local capacities and vulnerabilities, and to
anticipate the complexities you may encounter as part of local disaster prevention,
preparedness, response, and recovery. Use of the tool provides information to
supplement other readiness and response activities such as capacity and vulnerability
assessment and neighborhood infrastructure mapping.
When to use the tool
Data can be collected at any time to learn more about your community. Data should be
updated regularly and any time significant changes occur within the community. Data
collection also can be beneficial as a part of orienting new members to your organization
and community.
Instructions
Step 1: Review and download relevant U.S. Census data. Census data for your local area
are available at http://factfinder.census.gov. The American Community Survey (ACS) is an
ongoing survey that provides data annually. Community fact sheets include:
