The purpose <strong>of</strong> the Association shall be to promote<br />
the efficiency <strong>of</strong> the Coast <strong>Artillery</strong> Corps by maintaining<br />

Meet The New Associate Editor<br />
Major H. G. Wood assumed his duties as Associate Editor<br />
<strong>of</strong> the JOURNALon 19 July after completion <strong>of</strong> graduate<br />
work at Columbia University where he received an ]\1.S.<br />
in Journalism.<br />
Just prior to reporting to the JOURNALfor duty, he also<br />
completed the six-week basic <strong>Air</strong>borne course at Fort<br />
Benning, Georgia.<br />
Major Wood graduated from the University <strong>of</strong> \iVashington<br />
in 1940 and went on active duty under the Thomason<br />
Act on 1 July 1940. He received his Regular Army<br />
appointment in the CAC upon completion <strong>of</strong> this tour in<br />
1941.<br />
During World War II, he spent two and one-half years<br />
with the Panama Canal Department, part <strong>of</strong> this time as<br />
Executive <strong>of</strong> an A\V battalion.<br />
Upon his return to the United States, he became Editor<br />
<strong>of</strong> Army Talk and Armed Forces Talk, which position he<br />
held till his assignment to Columbia University as a student.<br />
Major \iVood brings an outstanding journalistic background<br />
\vith him to the.JouRNAL and there is little doubt<br />
that it will reflect favorably in the JOURNAL.<br />

More About Merger <strong>of</strong> Associations<br />
Since publication <strong>of</strong> the last issue <strong>of</strong> the JOURNAL, progress<br />
has been made with reference to the Infantrv Association's<br />
proposal for a merger <strong>of</strong> the JOURNALSand Associations<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Combat Arms.<br />
The main points <strong>of</strong> discussion now concern the editorial<br />
policy <strong>of</strong> the proposed journal and the constituency <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Executive Council <strong>of</strong> the proposed association.<br />
We reiterate hmNeverthat no action will be taken by the<br />
Executive Council until the entire matter has been put to<br />
a vote <strong>of</strong> the membership.<br />

F-84 Thunderjets Equipped<br />

With High-Velocity<br />
Offensive po\\'er <strong>of</strong> the U. S. <strong>Air</strong> Force's Republic f-8~<br />
Thunderjets has been increased considerably by the addition<br />
<strong>of</strong> high-\'elocity aircraft rockets to the normal operational<br />
equipment <strong>of</strong> six .50 caliber machine guns.<br />
The seven-ton Thunderjet carries eight 140-pound rod;ets,<br />
four under each ""lng. They are mounted in pairs a~<br />
fired individually bv the pilot. The rockets have a Illll-Xl'<br />
mum \'elocitv <strong>of</strong> 1,400 feet a second (more than 950 II1il~<br />
, c~<br />
an hour), and durino- the tests at Aberdeen, "yere pI<br />
from an F-8-I-flying a~ speeds ranging up to 500 milesr<br />
hour. The pilot was Captain Franklin Rizer, <strong>of</strong> <strong>Air</strong> :\;r<br />
teriel Command.
