EVERGREEN MAGNOLIAS (cont.) 'ST. MARY' - This grandiflora is the standard to espallier. The plant is easy to flatten against a wall. Our big 40 year old plant is 20' tall , 12' wide and 2 feet deep. The foliage is glossy green and the plant has large flowers. Was hurt but quickly recovered at -12° F. 2 gal. $ 30.00 'VICTORIA' - A shrubby tree to 20'-30' with large white flowers. 1 gal. $ 20.00 MAGNOLIA 'HEAVEN SCENT' - One of D. Todd Gresham's hybrids. We originally got our plant from Hillier's. It's typical to have an American plant that must go to England to be discovered. The light pink-purple flowers heavily cover the plant in late March. 2 gal. $ 60.00 MAGNOLIA HYPOLEUCA (OBOVATA) - This magnolia has perhaps the most beautiful foliage of any magnolia. Our origianl tree is 50+ feet years old and is 40' x 30' with 18" dark green foliage. The white flowers are 4-6" wide and appear in May - July. The structure of the tree is like a giant candelabra so make a nice silhouette during winter. 1 gal. $ 40.00 MAGNOLIA KOBUS 'BOREALIS' - This magnolia is super hardy and actually loves the north. Don't try in the South or California. We remember a vine-like plant of M. kobus in San Fransisco. The flowers are pure white stars in the spring. 1 gal. $ 25.00 MAGNOLIA KOSAR AND DE VOS HYBRIDS M. 'ANN' - Small flowers of medium pink-purple. The flowers are sweetly cinnamon scented. Always seems to draw attention. 1 gal. $ 22.00 M. 'BETTY' - Mid range purple between 'Susan' and 'Pinkie'. Very heavy blooming. 1 gal. $ 22.00 M. 'JANE - M. liliflora 'Reflorescens X M. stellata 'Waterlily'. This Kosar Devos hybrid has handsome flowers that are deep pink purple on the outtside of the tepals. The sweetly scented flowers will cover this hardy hybrid each spring. 1 gal. $ 22.00 M. 'SUSAN' - Has long, slender, erect red-purple buds, with 6 deeply toned tepals opening to 5". The tepals give a slightly twisted display. This is our very favorite -- superb growth habit -- compact. 1 gal. $ 22.00 2 gal. $ 28.00 MAGNOLIA LILIFLORA 'O'NEILL' - Perhaps the darkest purple flowering magnolia. Our plant is 30+ years old. It is 12' tall and bushy all the way to the ground. The plant starts flowering in mid March and continues heavily until late April. After April 15, the plant blooms sporadically until fall. 1 gal. $ 30.00 2 gal. $ 40.00 MAGNOLIA LOEBNERI 'BALLERINA' - This magnolia has proven very hardy. The flowers are small, white and look like M. stellata 'Royal Star' . Rather than being a shrub, 'Ballerina' becomes a 30 foot tree. Found and named by Joe McDaniel. 2 gal. $ 25.00 18 Magnolia loebneri (cont.) 'LEONARD MESSEL' - Named at Nymans, this fine magnolia is becoming better known and appreciated. The pink flower buds open to light pink, star shaped flowers. Our original (planted out in 1975) is now 25' X 12'. 2 gal. $ 18.00 MAGNOLIA MACROPHYLLA -What can we say more than this magnolia is the largest leafed native American tree. We have had young plants with 3 foot leaves. For those wishing to create the tropical garden, this is perfect and you don't have to dig it like many tropicals. M. macrophylla is hardy to at least -20°F. (our tree thrived through -12°F.). The flowers are also huge (up to 15" across and very white). 1 gal. $ 30..00 MAGNOLIA 'MARJORY GOSSLER' - (denudata x sargentiana 'Robusta Blood Moon'). We sent pollen to Phil Savage (Detroit) and he hybridized and grew some plants to tree size then sent us scion wood. The best of these plants Phil named M. 'Marjory Gossler'. It has large white flowers with a pink flush. The sister seedling has been hardy to -25-30° F. in a parking lot. This is a very attractive large tree (30'). 1 gal. $ 60.00 MAGNOLIA OFFICINALIS BILOBA - The large leaves of this Chinese species can get up to 18" long. This large tree can get to 40-50' tall. M. officinalis is the Chinese counterpart of M. hypoleuca so the flowers appear in May-June. Flowers are white and are 6" across. 1 gal. $ 35.00 MAGNOLIA 'PEACHY' - (M. acuminata 'Fertle Myrtle' X M. sprengeri 'Diva'). This hardy mix of yellow and pink creates an attractive colored flowers. This Phil Savage hybrid was registered by Dick Figlar in '94. M. 'Peachy' will bloom late March - April so will be past most of the frost. 1 gal. $ 60.00 MAGNOLIA 'PEPPERMINT STICK' - (M. liliflora 'Nigra' X M. veitchii). This was one of Gresham's original named hybrids back in the early '60's. The light pink flowers are very much like M. veitchii. For us, the orginal Gresham hybrids are easier to grow and better garden plants. 2 gal. $ 50.00 MAGNOLIA 'ROSE MARIE' - This hardy (-30°F.comes from Dennis Ledvina' hybridizing in Green Bay, WI. Dennis has created a large flowering magnolia that has rich pink color on the outside of the tepls and light pink on the inside. This is one of the few large flowering pink magnolias that is truly hardy. 1 gal. $ 60.00 MAGNOLIA SALICIFOLIA - Those listed have been hardy to -12° F. here: M. SALICIFOLIA 'ELSIE FRYE' - Ths M. salicifolia was named after great plantswoman Elsie Frye from Seattle. The white flowers are 5-6" across and have pink tipped stamens in March on an upright, pyramidal tree. 2 gal. $ 50.00 5 gal. $ 75.00 M. SALICIFOLIA 'MISS JACK' - A large 40' tree with thousands of white flowers for a mass effect. 1 gal. $ 28.00 MAGNOLIA SARGENTIANA 'ROBUSTA BLOOD MOON' -Named in San Francisco for an opera. Much more upright than M. sargentiana 'Robusta. Stunning deep pink flowers are 12" across. 1 gal. $ 60.00
MAGNOLIA 'SAYONARA' - This Gresham hybrid has large white goblets in March - April. This was one of the early Greshams from the 1960's. Our plant is 30' tall and 20' wide. 2 gal. $ 40.00 MAGNOLIA M. SIEBOLDII - Our most recommended magnolia, especially for the small garden. This excellent large shrubsmall tree flowers late April - August 1. The flowers are ivory white with red stamens. The pendant flowers are followed by brilliant pink seed pods like little lanterns. Overall, one of the most beautiful plants we grow. 1 gal. $ 15.00 M. SIEBOLDII 'COLOSSUS' - This form is a chemically induced form of M. sieboldii. We first found plants spring of '06. Many of the plants bloomed with much larger white flowers than the species. The big difference we've seen so far is the much larger oval leaves. We think M. sieboldii 'Colossus' will be a much larger shrub or small tree than M. sieboldii. 2 gal. $ 50.00 5 gal. $ 60.00 MAGNOLIA SOULANGIANA 'COATES' - Check Jim Gardner's book for pictures and you will be sold. This soulangiana came from the old Leonard Coates Nursery in the '70's as M. 'Rustica Rubra'. It is definitely not your father's (mother's) 'Rustica Rubra'. The flowers are a soft pinky purple and are not as chalice shaped. Our big plant is always a show stopper and we understand M. soul. 'Coates' is also very hardy. 1 gal. $ 30.00 MAGNOLIA 'STAR WARS' -Forget about the name. This plant would be snapped up every time if it didn't have the name. M. 'Star Wars' is an upright growing magnolia to 30' X15'. The dark green foliage is nice all summer, but it's the beautiful, pinky-purple, large flowers for which it's grown. Hardy below 0° F. and will bloom as a 5-6' plant. Try it, you'll like it. 1 gal. $ 50.00 MAGNOLIA STELLATA - 'CENTENNIAL' - Named for the Arnold Arboretum's 100th year and is reputed to be an improved 'Waterlily'. It is grown as a seedling for M. stellata 'Rosea'. We are indebted to the Arnold Arboretum who sent us our stock plant. 1 gal. $ 22.00 'CHRYSANTHUMUMIFLORA'. This small full growing star magnolia has an upright form. The flowers are soft pink and fully double. The tepals are smaller and lighter color than M. s. 'Jane Platt'. M. s. 'Chrysanthimumiflora' is a good choice for a small area. 2 gal. $ 40.00 'ROSEA JANE PLATT' - We named this excellent plant for the late Jane Platt of Portland, OR. Mrs. Platt had grown M. stellata 'Rosea' for years. We took cuttings and decided it was a superior clone and asked Jane what to name it. She jokingly said, "How about Jane Platt?" We did and shocked her. The more we watch this plant the better we like it. We think M. stellata 'Jane Platt' and Fothergilla gardenii 'Jane Platt' are fitting tributes to a great friend and gardener. It has been given an Award of Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society. 1 gal. $ 35.00 'ROYAL STAR' - A seedling selection of 'Waterlily' having pure white tepals, pink buds, flowers to 6". Originated in John Vermeulen's Nursery in New Jersey. Tests prove it to be very hardy. 1 gal. $ 15.00 19 Magnolia stellata (cont.) 'WATER LILY' - Light pink flowers opening to pure white, many tepalled. 1 gal. $ 20.00 MAGNOLIA 'SUNSPIRE' -an upright growing magnolia that is almost columnar. This new (to us) magnolia is good for a narrow area such as a small garden or courtyard. The flowers are medium yellow and are flowering before the leaves appear. 1 gal. $ 50.00 MAGNOLIA THOMPSONIANA - The first hybrid magnolia. Thought to be a natural hybrid of M. tripetala and M. virginiana. M. thompsoniana is a large deciduous shrub. Our 50 year old tree is 20 X 20' and has 3 major stems. The ivory flowers appear in May - June and are lemon scented. Rarely offered in nurseries anywhere. 1 gal. $ 45.00 MAGNOLIA VIRGININIANA - M. VIRGINIANA 'MOONGLOW' -This new M. virginiana is very fast growing and makes an excellent tree for the damp garden or even the well drained garden. The white flowers are typical M. virginiana. Said to be hardy to minus 25° F. 2 gal. $ 32..00 M. VIRGINIANA 'SANTA ROSA' - This evergreen form of the swamp magnolia has glossy green foliage. The dark green leaves have bluish gray tomentum beneath them. This tree can take very wet soils. 2 gal. $ 40.00 MAGNOLIA 'VULCAN' - An incredible glowing redpurple. Our plant is blooming the correct color and size after 3-4 years. The first blooms will be an odd purple and we worried it wasn't the correct plant, but it changed drastically with age. Hardy to probably 0° F. The flowers can be up to 12" across in March. 2 gal. $ 50.00 MAGNOLIA 'WADA'S MEMORY' - We have a hard time keeping up with demand for M. 'Wada's Memory'. M. 'Wada's Memory' is a classy plant for all its merits. The young tree is very upright with bronze new growth and dark green leaves during summer. The white flowers appear in March by the hundreds, if not thousands. The individual flower is not that wonderful but with so many they make a grand display. M. 'Wada's Memory' is well adapted to both cold and warm areas. 1 gal. $ 25.00 MAGNOLIA WILSONII - We sold this beautiful tree for yours but we were buying cuttings from a very good propagator. When their nursery closed we couldn't get anyone to root them. We finally got seed and grew them. The white flowers have red stamens in late April - June. The 6" flowers are pendant like M. sieboldii but M. wilsonii becomes a 30' tree. Don't recommend for the southeast or California, but in the northwest M. wilsonii is one of the best summer bloomers. 1 gal. $ 25.00 MAGNOLIA 'WOODSMAN' - One of my least favorite magnolias. The tree itself is very handsome. The flowers are attractive in form, but the colors are wild pink, purple, green, and brownish. Almost everyone else likes the colors, so make your own decision. 1 gal. $ 50.00 MAGNOLIA 'YELLOW LANTERN' - A light colored yellow magnolia. Probably closer to cream than true yellow, but still a nice color. Very hardy and fast growing. 1 gal. $ 30.00
