2007-2008 INTRODUCTION
We hope all is well with all of you, and the last year has been productive and enjoyable.
As usual, we have been busy and are surprised that it is already fall and time to get this
year’s catalog out to all of you. We are thrilled with this year’s selections; we have added
many new varieties to the catalog as well. We are also listing several items we have not
been able to carry for some years.
Three items we are really excited to offer for the first time are Styrax japonica
‘Frosted Emerald’ PPAF. This is a variegated form of Styrax japonica that has a beautiful
cast to the foliage and has to our knowledge never been offered before to the public.
Another Styrax that is new and has not been offered before is Styrax japonica ‘Fragrant
Fountain’ PPAF. This form is unique for it’s columnar form coupled with a weeping
habit this creates a beautiful effect for any garden. The final new plant we want to
highlight is Trachycarpus wagneriensis. This relatively hardy palm is rarely offered and
can thrive in areas which other palms would only dream of. There are many other new
and exciting plants this year that we are just as excited about, we just wanted to highlight
a couple. As usual, the new items for this year will be denoted in the catalog with the
small magnolia flower next to the description.
It is time for the normal what have we been up to this year. For those of you who are new
to our nursery and catalog we are a small family operation and we pride ourselves on that
fact. Each year in the catalog we give a little highlight of the year’s events because many
of our customers we consider friends and they seem to enjoy the annual updates. Roger is
heading for 10 days to New York and the surrounding area in the first part of October. He
likes to go every couple of years to visit new gardens and to see the city. This summer
Marj, Dawn, Eric, and Pierce all went on a cruise to Alaska and enjoyed the scenery and
the time spent with family and friends. Pierce is starting the fourth grade and is looking
forward to the year with a new teacher and classmates. He spent the spring playing little
league baseball spending most of his time pitching he really enjoyed the experience.
We are thrilled with the growth of orders we are receiving on the web site. This has been
a wonderful addition and we hope for continued growth in this area; however, we are
always going to produce the paper copy of the catalog. We have no problems answering
questions and taking orders over the phone so feel free to call with questions during
regular business hours.
We currently have only two employees to thank this year. Lisa Seibright for her
assistance in the office, and Hugo Bravo for his work in the nursery. We would like to
extend extra thanks to Hugo for his work over this past year he has been a great help for
us. He has worked through the death of his 9-year-old son this past spring with a spirit
and positive outlook I think that few would be able to muster under the same
circumstances.
This year the Eugene chapter of the Willamette Valley Hardy Plant Group will be hosting
the annual study weekend. This annual event is held in different locations in the
northwest each year and is always well attended. The speakers lined up are an exciting
mix of gardening experts you would be hard pressed to see in one location again. They
