ACER PALMATUM 'RED DRAGON'. This maple came to us indirectly from Duncan & Davies in New Zealand. The dissected leaves are darker red than a. 'Crimson Queen' and hold the color later into the summer. This lace leaf will turn a smaller mound shaped form than A. p. 'Crimson Queen'. Great red fall foliage in October. 1 gal. $ 35.00 A. PALMATUM 'SKEETERS BROOM'. This plant is a sport of A. p. 'Gloodgood' which will get 4-5' tall rather than the 20' of A. p. 'Bloodgood. The bright red new growth will turn purple later in the summer. In fall the foliage will turn beautiful red. 1 gal. $ 35.00 A. PALMATUM 'UKIGUMO' - Truly a stunning foliage plant. The plant has green leaves when young. As the plant matures (slow growth) the leaves become spotted with white. Later the leaves become mostly white and from a distance it looks like a white shrub or small tree. Seems to be best in more shade than less. 1 gal. $ 42.00 A. PENNSYLVANICUM 'ERYTHROCLADUM' - "Moosewood" is a striped bark maple from Pennsylvania similar to Acer davidii, hersi, etc. The main difference is that A. p. 'Erythrocladum' has startling brilliant red bark in winter. A. 'Erythrocladum' is still a rare tree because of its slow growth and difficulty of grafting. 1 gal. $ 40.00 2 gal. $ 50.00 A. PSEUDOPLATANUS 'ESKIMO SUNSET' - Stunning is the only word for this moderate sized tree. The foliage is dark purple beneath and a variagtion of pink creampurple or green splashes above throughout the summer. When we first saw this tree it looked like stained glass through the summer. It took several years to obtain a plant for our garden. 2 gal. $ 70.00 A. RUFINERVE ERYTHROCLADUM - This fine striped bark maple is different than A. penn. 'Erythroclaum' so don't be confused. We were able to find a small number. Plants seem to be bushy and full to maybe 20-25'. We rarely get this plant as our propagator says it's maybe 5% success at grafting. 1 gal. $ 40.00 A. SHIRASAWANUM 'AUREUM' - This gorgeous maple has golden foliage all summer. In the fall the leaf is even more beautiful having yellow leaves with red margins. 1 gal. $ 40.00 5 gal. $ 50.00 Large sizes available up to 8' at nursery only. A. SHIRASAWANUM 'AUTUMN MOON' - Similar to A. s. 'Aureum' but this small tree has handsome pinkish accents on the new foliage. The accents seem to hold most of the summer and turn a beautiful gold in the fall. 1 gal. $ 40.00 ACTINIDIA KOLOMIKTA - One of the Chinese gooseberries with the leaves strongly marked with white and pink. This moderate vine grows to 15 feet tall and looks like it's blooming from April - July. The flowers are tiny white, but the foliage is very striking. 1 gal. $ 15.00 AESCULUS HIPPOCASTANUM 'LACINIATA' is a shrubby plant with very dissected narrow leaves of a chestnut. We don't know how big the plants will bet but they are extremely slow in containers. Very limited availability. 1 gal. $ 40.00 2 AGAPANTHUS A. 'ELAINE' has dark violet blue flowers in July- August. This large variety will get to 3-4' tall. Will make an excellent plant for a container or garden to give a blast of blue during summer. 1 gal $ 10.00 A. 'ELLAMAE' - This is said to be one of the larget growing of the agapanthus. The deep blue flowers are in umbles in late July and will make a beautiful bridge from the mid summer to the late summer flowers. From our growing these agapanthus for many years, they will defoliate most winters and will survive down to 5° F. 1 gal $ 10.00 AGAVE A. 'JAWS' - This Agave makes a superb container plant in cooler climates. Its biggest need is for a very fast draining soil. 1 gal. $ 15.00 A. POLYPHYLLA. This spiral agave was practically unknown 20 years ago in this country. We first saw two plants in Berkeley, CA and were enraphtured at the leaves spirallying from the crown. We grow our plant in a rich potting soil and it is now 18" across. It always causes comment. We keep our plant under the eves of Marj's house until it goes below 15° then put it in the garage until it warms up again. 1 gal. $ 22.00 ARACHNOIDES SIMPLICOR VARIEGATA is an evergreen fern that will get to about one foot tall. The deep green leaves will have yellow variegation at the center of the frond. This fern can brighten a shady spot on its own, but grows well with many other woodlanders. 1 gal. $ 14.00 ARALIA A. ELATA 'AUREOVARIEGATA' The golden margined form of the Aralia elata. The major problem (price) of Aralias comes from the few buds produced, so there just isn't enough to graft each season. Our plants come from Holland and have been grown several seasons so are very well rooted. Other nurseries have offered the Aralias mail order, but they are bare root, so many die before getting established. Only three plants available 5 gal. $ 300.00 A. ELATA 'VARIEGATA' - This stunning boliage plant has compound leaves up to 3 feet long. The leaves are composed of one central mid rib with small leaves arranged along side ribs This is a 15' shrub of great class. We have offered A. elata 'Variegata' before but ceased offering it because of the expensicve price. People are in love immediately. We believe thay well be hardy well below 0° F., but haven't tried yet, and hope we wait many years to test them. These are well rooted large specimens, not bare root or one gallon size, but spectacular plants. Only three plants available 5 gal. $ 300.00 ARAUCARIA ARAUCANA - Monkey Puzzle from Southern Chile has very sharp, pointed needles. This interesting plant is rarely offered for sale. These are small but well rooted plants. 2 1/4 " pots $ 30.00 ARBUTUS 'MARINA' - This garden worthy madrone is probably a cross of two European species of arbutus. The stems peel to reveal the orange-copper bark. A. 'Marina' needs good drainage and a moderate climate, such as coastal
Arbutus 'Marina' (cont.) Northwest or California. We once saw a big plant at the Victor Reiter, Jr. garden in San Francisco and it was a stunning tree. 1 gal. $ 22.00 ARISAEMA CANDIDISSIMIM - The latest of the jack in the pulpits to emerge. The lovely pink flowers are borne in June followed by large glossy leaves. 1 gal. $ 25.00 ASARUM A. MAXIMUM - Chocolate-purple flowers are like velvet in spring. The glossy leaves get to 6" tall and rich flowers are like some strange moth hiding under the leaves. 1 gal. $ 15.00 A. SPLENDENS - This wild ginger has glorious evergreen leaves with silver marking. Worth growing just for the foliage but the brown flowers are totally weird to look at under the leaves. 1 gal $ 15.00 ASPLENIUM TRICHOMANES A native all over the northern hemisphere and is an extraordinarily hardy small fern. This little clump fore former will get all of 8" tall with fine textured fronds. Grows well in a rock garden in excellent drainage or under our greenhouse propagation benches with heavy moisture year round. People always ask for some plants, so we are finally offering plants in the catalog. 1 gal. $ 8.00 AUCUBA 'ROZANNIE' - This evergreen shrub is THE plant for that dark spot in your garden. Aucuba 'Rozannie' has glossy dark green foliage. The fruits are large and bright red. We heartily recommend this great evergreen. 1 gal. $ 12.00 AZARA A. MICROPHYLLA -Teeny leaves with wavy margins. This azara has very glossy dark green leaves. In winter the evergreen leaves are complimented by vanilla scented golden yellow flowers. Hardy to perhaps 0° F. Can freeze down but comes back quickly. 1 gal. $ 17.00 BAPTISIA B. 'CAROLINA MOONLIGHT' - This soft yellow false indigo makes a mounding plant up to 2' X 2'. Once established B. 'Carolina Moonlight' is extremely hardy and long lived. Never needs to be divided or fussed with. This is essentially a perennial lupine with 2' tall flowers. 1 gal. $ 12.00 BERBERIS B. 'AMSTELVEEN' - A 2-3 foot evergreen barberry with an arching habit. The outer stems slightly cascade. The glossy green leaves have a beautiful tomentum on the undersides. Flowers are light yellow. 1 gal. $ 10.00 B. CALLIANTHA - This evergreen barberry has dark green foliage with silvery tomentum. The flowers are yellow and look like small daffodils. Hardy to 0° F. 1 gal. $ 12.00 B. IRWINII - This compact growing shrub will get 2 feet X 2 feet in 15 years. The evergreen leaves are tiny dark green on arching stems. The small flowers are golden yellow in spring. 1 gal. $ 10.00 B. 'ORANGE BEAUTY' - Has dark evergreen rounded leaves. The leaves make the perfect foil for the rich orangish flowers in early sprng. 2 gal. $ 18.00 3 BERBERIS 'PIRATE KING' - The more we grow barberries the more we want to grow. Don't worry about the thorns. The main time the thorns are a problem is during the growing in the nursery or planting them. B. 'Pirate King' is deciduous with small yellow flowers, followed by superb bright pink fruit in fall. The more fall color we can have in the garden the better we can enjoy our gardens through the year. 2 gal. $ 18.00 B. 'RED JEWEL' will grow to 2-3' tall in time. The glossy reddish purple foliage is evergreen so will make show all year. The plant will form a low mounding shape. 1 gal. $ 15.00 B. REPLICATA - People always see this barberry and ask what it is and want it. Berberis replicata has narrow dark evergreen foliage. The new foliage is rich purple as a highlight all summer over the green mature leaves. Our plant is 8 X 9' after 20 years and has been hardy to 0° F. and a flood 3' in 1996. (A really tough plant). 1 gal. $ 12.00 B. THUNBERGII 'AUREA NANA' - This barbery has small golden yellow leaves all spring and summer. Plants will get to 2' tall and make a rounded mound of foliage. B. thunbergii 'Aurea Nana' likes some afternoon shade to keep from burning. 1 gal. $ 12.00 B. THUNBERGII 'BAGATELLE' - A purple cushion of foliage. The foliage is bright purple and turns flaming scarlet in fall. The plant will get 2' X 2' in many years. B. 'Bagatelle' is one of the smallest of the barberries. Takes bright full sun. 1 gal. $ 10.00 B. THUNBERGII 'BURGUNDY CAROUSEL' - (Berberis Baitone). A low mounded shrub with uniform growth. B. 'Burgundy 'Carousel' is larger and richer purple red foliage than Berberis 'Concorde'. 1 gal. $ 12.00 B. THUNBERGII 'CONCORDE' - This dwarf barberryhas velvety rich purple foliage all summer. The plant will get to perhaps 2' tall and could be used as a low hedge or in a rock garden for a splash of purple. Found and named by Wavecrest <strong>Nursery</strong>. 1 gal. $ 12.00 B. THUNBERGII 'HELMOND PILLAR' - We hope wefinally have enough of this superb plant. The European introduction is strictly columnar 2' X 6' tall. THUNBERGII 'ROYAL CLOAK' -This large purple leafed large plant grows up to 8' tall. The leaves are deep dark purple and at a distance look like Cotinus 'Royal Purple'.
